Minister for Foreign Affairs, Francine Baron, has chastised Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, for a letter that he copied to the United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, in which he expressed concern about what he considers to be Dominica’s involvement in the sale of passports to international criminals, but Linton has hit back saying that Baron can be “as disgusted as she wants,” but the truth remains.
Speaking at Parliament on Monday night, Baron expressed disgust over the letter which was sent by Linton to the Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, and copied to the U.S. Ambassador, Linda S. Taglialatela, regarding a request to share identity information for travellers entering the United States.
An excerpt of the letter sent by Linton reads;
“…The Parliamentary Opposition urges government to ensure on time and complete compliance with the new U.S. information sharing requirements in support of vetting visa and boarder and immigration application announced earlier this month. In light of your government’s enduring practice of placing diplomatic passports in the hands of accused international criminals and its increasing reliance on selling Dominican citizenship to buyers in the terrorist hotspots of the world…”
Baron stated that she had no doubt that Linton was fully aware of what the U.S. was asking.
“How does he react Madame Speaker, he writes to the United States Madame Speaker, and tells the United States, in effect, that Dominica issues passports to people from terrorist hotspots, and issues diplomatic passports to criminals, and that Dominica is compromising the global security architecture against terrorism. Can you believe that Madame Speaker?” Baron exclaimed.
She added that she is “disgusted” that as a citizen of Dominica and a leader of Opposition such statements would be made to the U.S. and that all Dominicans should “condemn that.”
Linton, however, is not backing down.
“Francine Baron can be as disgusted as she wants. Truth forever on the scaffold, wrong forever on the throne, yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above his own. You know the quote Matt,” Linton stated on the Q95FM “Hot Seat” programme on Tuesday.
The Opposition Leader expressed that the contents of his letter to the Prime Minister and the U.S. Ambassador is in no way comparable to the actions of Francine Baron.
“That is the letter that has disgusted Francine Baron. The same Francine Baron that cannot tell us who our diplomats overseas are, the same Francine Baron who was in Malaysia in November of 2014 and probably didn’t bother to check what was the source of funds [that] paid for the ‘wining and dining’ and the entertainment that she enjoyed at the expense of Ali Reza Monfared,” Linton said.
Linton noted further that what “disgusts” him is the idea that only the “reporting and the uncovering of these mysterious deeds” is what disgraces Dominica, and not “what they do to disgrace Dominica that disgraces Dominica.”
“So in other words, what Francine Baron expects of the parliamentary opposition in Dominica is to tell lies to cover up the misdeeds of the government, is to tell lies to cover up the truth that the government is placing our diplomatic passports in the hands of international criminal bandits like Ng Lap Seng, like Ali Reza…they would prefer us to be quiet about this and not express our concern,” he stated.
Linton insisted that Baron cannot expect the Opposition to begin to cover up their actions, after so much “crucifixion” for telling the truth, and made it clear that he is “not going down that road.”

A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity. Where I disagree slightly, some of his comments were uncouth and provocative, my opinion. Although what he said may be truthful, I believe that a truth that’s told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent. Mr. Skerrit , much more openness is needed in conducting the affairs of the CBI. Mr. Linton, a bit more humility won’t hurt.

Trump tried to ban entry into the US of Muslims – his courts said nada. The point is you could sell passports to thousands of non terrorists from terrorist hot spots and yes you can provide a diplomatic passport to someone who later gets convicted of money laundering, bribery, theft, and so on. Why? Because these crooks are among those in the market for alternative passports and who know others in their circle to push your CBI program.
When Mr. Linton becomes PM he will come to realize these facts. The only thing that will change is the names on the list of the CBI agents, the criminals that inadvertently get diplomatic passports and so on.
Mr. Linton needs to grow in stature as a statesman in waiting. He cannot continue to seek to destroy what he hopes to inherit. From what he says, the PM has already done a good job at this.

That is what we have come to expect from a so-called politician. The honourable Minister never asked the Leader of the Opposition to remain quiet and not speak out as he thinks or perceived things to be done. The government received a request from the US regarding the US’s own national interest. The government was the recipient of the letter. Mr. Linton got wind of that letter. Rather than allowing government to respond to the request, Mr. Linton jumped on the story and concocted his own version of how the request should be dealt with it. And so to ensure that the US is on top of his assumptions and allegations he copied the US Ambassador on what he thinks Dominica’s response should be. A response that painted Dominica in the worst way possible. What was most the most devastating aspect of the public relations related to that letter was the impression given to the Dominican people that the US had singled out Dominica from among every other country in the world. A very dishonest move.

To compound it, I heard Matt on Q95 talking about the request from the US authorities and if you were like the usual shallow-minded band of listeners you would swear that the request was designed specifically for Dominica or the only country which had to respond to the questions was Dominica. I carry no torch for Roosevelt Skerrit but this is incorrect. Our government today is composed of Labour Party members/supporters only. It is possible to have opposition members serving in a government, even its cabinet, but only in a coalition government. Such governments are typical of countries with proportional representation and generally tend to do well, since compromise is a prerequisite to run the country in the interest of all members and the constituencies they represent. In my opinion it is a more equitable form of government than our Westminster model, which I think fundamentally undemocratic in that it can disenfranchise a considerable number of the electorate, who do not support a majority party..

Ng Lap Seng is now awaiting sentencing. Alireza Monfared, is similarly awaiting a trial in Tehran as are Alison Madueke in London and Francesco Corallo in Italy.
