Ross University axes workers in Dominica

Ross University’s campus in Portsmouth

Ross University in Portsmouth has begun the process of making workers redundant in Dominica.

DNO has been informed that over 100 workers received redundancy letters on Thursday. The number has not been confirmed by the school.

More than 1,400 students, faculty and staff from the school relocated temporarily to Knoxville, Tenn. to continue their program of study due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria on Dominica in September last year.

In December 2017, the school wrote to members of staff informing them of its intention to lay off some employees due to changes being made to the operations of the school after the hurricane.

Dean of Ross University, Dr. William .F. Owen Jr. said that the school would maintain what he described as a “core staff” in Dominica.

“We will no longer be able to continue to employ our entire Dominican Campus as we have since Hurricane Maria,” he wrote in December.

At a press conference on December 19, 2017, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said he hopes Ross University returns to Dominica by May 2018. He said a committee was appointed to study the Ross situation and to work with the school in its recommencement of classes.

The redundancies could have a great impact on Dominica and the second town of Portsmouth where it is located.

Ross University has been in operation in Dominica since 1978.

DNO is following this developing story and will publish more information as it becomes available.

I sincerely wish Govt of Dominica does all what is necessary to bring Ross Uni back. The Govt should help in improving the roads and other conditions in the area around Ross. It will come back if there is proper housing and security for the students.

    Please Govt do something fast.
    Thanks, 8) 8)

How you want him to deal with it Dods? You that not a God, why you doh help him. ? (Happy).

You mean me; Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque help Roosevelt M. Skerrit?

It would be against my conscience and morality to help someone like him. In the event I find Roosevelt in a situation where he needs blood to save his life, if his blood group is B-positive, I would gladly give him my blood which is B-positive, in order to save his life; and that is only because he is human; not so much out of love eh; although he is Me Almost Nearly Cousin.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

However, to give Roosevelt any assistance pertain to Dominica, would be helping him to continue in his destructive  ways, and incompetence in destroying our country! If I could; literally run him out of power tomorrow with a whip, I would do so, and it has nothing to do with hate or dislike!

The man is simply bad for our country!

God would have sent a hurricane to destroy the fabric,–Telemaque

You simply like to speak negatively especially against my messages, but the truth is that you know d*mn well that I am right–the mind of one who is plagued with darkness, can never see the Light–you are one of those

That quote above os like a broken record–you always start your contention that way because you have nothing else to say. And yes, God has to be in everything, as far as my Life is concerned, I will have it no other way. I embrace the relationship which we share together

Or else I would be like those so-called Christians, claiming to believe but have nothing to tell others why they believe, for they are not worthy of a Testimony from God

So then you are simply a phonnie one, claiming to believe in God, Claiming Christianity, but Jesus has cautioned us, His chosen people, to stay intact- so as to know them by their fruits and by their words. I am watching you!

Anyone who thinks Ross will return to Dominica is kidding himself. Likewise, anyone who thinks All Saints can fill the void is also a fool. Hurricane Maria gave Ross the excuse it needed to find a better place to be.

Agree with your intelligent and objective comment. It would be naive of anyone to expect Ross to keep all their staff here while operations have moved elsewhere even temporarily. I too hope that they come back because at the end of the day it is our brothers and sisters who are out of jobs and it is our society which will feel the effects of the job losses.
Bards, do you passports too? Then at the end of the day it ain’t gonna affect Barbs unlike we the people who are not into passports or the pretending we the peoplein our society who are in the drug trade as they are not in the passport distribution business and want/need to be above the fray and have no desire or work hard. January 5, 2018

Some corporate citizens genuinely care about the wellbeing of their employees but most are strictly motivated by profit. Ross University is presently not generating any income, therefore, it is logically expected that it would have to make many of its workers redundant. This should come at no surprise. What is really abhorrent to me is the PM giving false hope to the local employees of Ross by issuing this deliberately erroneous statement that the university would be reopened in May of this year. This gives me excruciating pain. In a time like this, when many local business entities have closed down, unemployment has skyrocketed, yet Mr. Skerrit has outsourced construction jobs to foreign construction entities. For misleading the working class of Dominicans, for putting foreign workers first, for throwing common sense through the window, Mr. Skerrit deserves our collective scorn.

        Hi Pas toutes D’cen aveg

I have no problem with Ibo France’s piece. That is his analysis. He gives reasons for his issue with Mr. Skerrit whether factual or not. for example, I do not know that a deliberately erroneous statement was made by Mr. Skerrit. He would be most irresponsible if he made that statement without any reference to Ross officials. Ibo France is entitled to his opinion on that and the other allegations as well.

I’m not sure which BS…… you are referring to who is being supported blindly, as I make a point of not doing anything in life “blindly”. One of the BS…… I know I will certainly not support blindly or otherwise because that one is unabashedly real with his “BS….”.

Please don’t lose sleep over who you think I support blindly because you will certainly bring health issues upon yourself. I am just that way, not a crowd follower, not easily influenced by “BS…” no matter how eloquently couched.

Well, let us pray to our God, whoever that may be…… (Skerritt or other) for the return of Ross to Dominica. While we are in prayer, Let us also remember that President Trump said he would be taking names on that famous Jerusalem UN vote and that America will NOT forget it. If Ross University needs the co-operation of the US Government to return offshore to Dominica, then our goose is well cooked. I cannot believe that a Leadership, knowing that the country has so much at stake would so boldly bite the hand that help feed the nation. Or did this Labour Leadership even understand the implications of their irresponsible actions at that UN vote???

Didn’t Skerrit know Ross was going to release some employees? What did he and the government do to ensure that didn’t happen? How are the people going to survive? Negotiations could be tuff and most times both teams walk out happy. In this case Ross is happy but Dominica is the loser. Do I blame Ross? Absolutely not because they did what they had to do to remain in business. I blame our government for not being able to keep these jobs for it’s citizens. I see this as a failure of the government and for this Skerrit should resign

      My little take

I’m also sure that he knew Maria was going to develop into a category 5 hurricane. I am just not sure why he did not stop it from coming our way. I am sure with his extra-ordinary powers conferred on him by you he could have negotiated with it not to hit Dominica.

When I read and discern the mind-set of the several “My little takes” on this site. When I recognise the positive energy and political will required to drive the recovery of this country. When I take a look at the people are who are getting off their behinds and actually doing something other than talking I am sure glad that Maria happened while Skerrit is in office ( in spite of all his alleged corruption, ineptness and lack of capability etc.).

You see, just as Maria has laid bare our hills and valleys, she has also actually exposed to those who genuinely want to see, the ones who are really inept and lacking in capacity. Post category 5 was the time for all sides to shine. Did they?

I understand its was a natural disaster however there were certain issues in the area tht needs addressing before they can return in MAY 2018.The areas where the apartments are the is poor lighting with street lights, roads were really bad saw students imagine students with their infants, the grass in areas was very tall n dense & Access to a proper medical facility. Ross realized we have a very weak government that knows nothing about leadership and negotiations, so they jumped on the cracks of Maria to cut staff. The truth is, Ross knows they need Dominica to succeed and Dominica needs Ross. Sadly our government knows we need rest but they don’t understand that Ross needs us badly! Ross is an offshore school that CANNOT operate in the US for long. Furthermore, they cannot go to anywhere else to start from ground zero. DA is cut for Ross because of our natural beauty, undeveloped, and slow pace really creates an environment that is conducive for study, unlike other islands that have more destruction. Skerrit should realize that and use it as his key weapon of negotiation. But knowing how weak this administration is from the time Ross said they going to release over 100 employees, they were put on the back foot and could do nothing but yield to the pressure. It’s not Maria but POOR leadership

Well, with his big mighty mouth, and small pea brain  intelligence, let’s see how the god Roosevelt Skerrit is going to deal with that!

Some Dominican wrote on DNO: “when Skerrit speaks the world listens.”  Okay; so let’s see how influential is Mr god Roosevelt Skerrt. Food for thought: From Jamaica in the North to Guyana in South America are geographically in the Caribbean, all of the islands are prone to hurricane. St. Kitts is also vulnerable  to hurricanes too.

Notice Rose did not move all of the students to Tennessee, but headed to St. Kitts, that is an indication they intended to pull out of Dominica for some good reason, other than potential hurricanes.

It is so ridiculous, that we have a university operating in Dominica all of these years, however, that which “was part of our infrastructure, an employment provider was not allowed to build dormitories  for the student population which are all foreigners.

I am sorry for the university decision to leave, but if…

So many questions to be asked, but none will be answered at his press conference or briefings because he cannot articulate any cohesiveness when it comes to Dominica and what is happening in Dominica post or pre Hurricane Maria

    • January 5, 2018

What are your suggestions? What lies are you referring to? Has Ross said it is closing its operations in Dominica? How can government prevent Ross from laying off workers. Ross is not the first company to lay off workers as a result of Maria. Whichchurch and Auto Trade have laud off workers, these companies are rebuilding and when that process is completed hopefully many of the laid off workers will be employed. Time to put your petty politics aside.

People of Dominica do not be disheartened, I truly believe that the Authority of our God of Heaven is in the midst of those things which is happening to us today.

And when He decides to take full control, He will break done; He will pull down, He will tear things apart, and He will throw out unwanted things that is in our Life

I like to say, that regardless of my difficult issue at the time, God will not allow me to go down like an old dog; and He has never done so. In fact, the more I am able to come out of my difficulties, the stronger my spirit becomes.

No one will embrace the difficulties of Life, but we should try to notice the strength, which causes us to desire to go on, not surrendering to state distress and despair, which will definitely bring us defeat That strength which I am referring to is God’s Peace.

Fellow Dominican, believe that God is looking and preparing us for His next move, whatever that is. But be sure that in Him, through His Son Jesus, there is no defeat.

But make sure that you are calling onto His name for your freedom from pain and anxiety; in that as human beings, wherever we are, there is going to circumstances which will try to overcome our strength of the body. However, it is no secret; what God can do. What He has done for others, He will do for you.

Once again my people, let the Peace of our God in Heaven, be the strength which you need to overcome the difficulties of Life, like that which we are facing in Dominica at present time.

Elizabeth, you bring God into everything; do you believe God would have sent a hurricane to destroy the fabric, of our nations Economy putting be one one hundred, or one person out of work, when God said by the sweet of thy face thou shall eat bread?

God has nothing to Rose leaving Dominica. People invest into places where they see progress, and prosperity. That that one cannot get a direct flight from any place, Canada, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere to Dominica is one of the most disparaging  factor people can only tolerate backwardness for so long!

Dominica is a very expensive place, if it more economical for a business to operate on another island, they will go to that island. Since Skerrit believe he is skilled in diplomacy, let me see diplomatic skills in bringing Ross to Dominica forever.

If they are gone forever I am sorry for the people who are out of work, nevertheless if it hurts Roosevelt Skerrit Politics, I am very happy!

This is sad, and it is gonna affect every one of us. Ross University created employment, gave the tourism industry a boost and also pumped revenue into the pockets of our locals and apartment owners. I just can’t imagine how the owners of the apartments in Picard are going to keep the apartments going and have revenue coming in.

Maybe All Saints can decide to move to Portsmouth to fill in the gap.

Let’s continue to pray for the best.

What you mean. Skerrit and his friends will get money at only 2% from the aid bank, buy the apartments at distressed prices and let them to the Chinese. of course. Don’t worry, they have their master plan.

100 workers out of employment at this time is quite jolting and disconcerting and I pray for God’s guidance and shepherding at this time.
If each employee is in a household of four (4) then a minimum of 400 people are affected immediately at households – then the ripple effect on supermarkets, shops, stores, transportation etc.

What is Ross’s total cadre of Dominicans employed? I do not know the number. If at the end of this process they make redundant more than 75%-85% of its workforce then this would be a head-scratcher that would require some serious contemplation by our economist on the short-term, but more profoundly, the long-term economic implications.

Some Dominican staff would have traveled with them to St. Kitts and or the US. Chances are that the persons who received layoff letters would be auxiliary staff, whose skills can be easily found elsewhere. It could also mean that they do not intend to pay out money to persons who are home for the next 6 months at least, until their return to Dominica (if they do).

      • sylvester Cadette
        January 5, 2018

Hi VEE. Thanks so much for this info. on some of the staff ( if it is for a fact). I also love your optimism and that is what we probably should embrace to find solutions to entice them to remain and also to find new investment partners. I really feel for the laid off staff. I just hope that we have counseling mechanisms in place because these compatriots did not lose jobs at a time where they could seek elsewhere in the economy. The whole economy is battered and bruised. What’s more, the majority may have lost property, either partially or totally and there family circle who would normally sympathize in these circumstances with some support, they too are battered and bruised by Hurricane Maria.

So Dominicans, the best we can do now, is not to waste energy playing “Blame Game”. There will be time enough for that. Right now we must work feverishly to utilize our energy towards finding solutions to our problems instead of wallowing in a pity party.
DOMINICA WE CAN DO THIS !!

        January 5, 2018

The employees were not laid off with the hopes of Ross returning to DA; the employees were made redundant and their relationship with the company terminated.

If and when Ross returns to DA, they will have to re-apply like everyone else if they are interested.

Some staff members will be traveling to St. Kitts and Knoxville, Tennessee to help with the operations there; while the other retained staff will remain on the DA campus to support these operations as well as help with the rebuilding of the DA campus.

Ross did not layoff any employee’s, the terminate there employment, making them redundant, meaning that they will be paid for the years that they were with ROSS.. layoff is that they still have their jobs but wont be getting any income and the company can extend the layoff. with redundancy, they will get paid but have no affiliation with ROSS, however. if/when ROSS comes back, they can reapply for their job. this is just to explain REDUNDANCY and LAYOFF.

Ross was not the first to lay off workers in Dominica and it certainly won’t be the last. Records are meant to be broken and oh my are the labor party good at doing this in a negative way. Never before in the history of Dominica has so many businesses shut down resulting in so many workers laid off; the amount of intrapreneur’s dreams that were murdered because of expenses leadining to foreclosure under this Dominica lazy party is frightening. Who have a little money that could invest scared of trying anything because of what has happened in the past. Only a dear devil would see quick sand and still walk into it. Even laborites leaving the island in great numbers. Soon skeritt’s guardian angels will soon leave him too because this guy is too curupt. What’s next for Dominica? Only God knows

I suppose you are not aware that never in the history of Dominica has a natural disaster of the magnitude of Maria occurred?

I suppose you are also not aware that the build up of anger, and resentment against the private sector for supposedly benefitting from CBI money and Skerrit’s corruption erupted into looting never seen in the history of Dominica?

I would like to tell you to pray that no “never before seen” disaster his Florida so that you can continue to remain on that perch spitting out your unsubstantiated generalisations and obvious negative wishes for our little Dominica the land we love.

God be with you for 2018 sir/madam.

        January 5, 2018

So you’re saying that there’s been a hurricane Maria since 2000? Because business started shutting downot in great numbers since the early stages of the reign of the Dominica lazy party

      • Barbara Saunders
        January 5, 2018

        Florida
It would be nice to come out from behind the generalisations and name a few that shut down and while you are at it name those who opened or constructed new facilities. Now that would be nice.

I read every day about businesses closing down in the US where you are. I just read that Trump’s job numbers in his first year were very good and I have a sneaky feeling that this was a result of some of Obama’s policies bearing fruit but he is taking the credit.

My brother, I travel to the US very often and the picture you people try to paint is far from reality. So many of our brothers and sisters are living in sub-standard conditions over there, can’t even come home because they are illegal. So my brother/sister I can better tolerate a Dominican here on the ground making comments than some of you.

We have had our Maria, America just had its snow bomb and God knows what’s next, so just pray for a better world for all of us instead of cursing Dominica.
