DNO POLL RESULT: No to mountain name changes

The majority of readers who participated in a DNO online poll have voted against changing the names of two prominent mountains in Dominica.

Recently it was announced that cabinet had accepted a recommendation by a special committee concerning the name changes.

Morne Diablotin will be Morne Santé (Mountain of Health) while Morne aux Diable will be called Morne Lapé (Mountain of Peace).

The annoucement generated much discussion among Dominicans and DNO sought to get the views of readers in a poll.

The poll asked: Should the mountains’ names be changed?

A total of 1,318 readers participated with 920 (70 percent) voting ‘no.’

325 readers or 25 percent voted ‘yes’, while 73 (5 percent) voted ‘I really don’t care.’

The poll was active for one week.

DNO’s poll is not a scientific one.

I think its the best thing that could happen. Our tallest mountain should not be named after the devil for he come to steal, to kill and destroy.and our mountain is overlooking the whole nation its time to get rid of all the obeah in our nation and turn to god so the first step is to get rid of the devil connecton to our nation which is the change of name.

A rose by any other name will smell as sweet.morne diablotin is a crowd puller, the name is unusal, tourist expect to find something rough and stupid instead, they noticed the trees are well mannered, disciplined and in line with respect for each other.share beauty.people of this island should learn from from nature its there for us to see

  5. December 23, 2012

What make you think Morne Diablotin as Morne Santé (Mountain of Health) and Morne aux Diable as Morne Lapé (Mountain of Peace) would make a difference? Mountains do not need name change. Glad that thought is put on the back burner, and hope it stays there.

If the reason for changing the names of the mountains hold true than it follows that the name Dominica should be changes to Wiseinica. Maybe then the people would rid the country of Dom minister of finance and replace him with a Wise Minister of Finance, one that has the ability to direct and develop the islands economy in a positive way. Instead of attempting to grow the economy, over the past decade the present minister of finance has through his incompetence and hat in hand approach has doomed to economy to another decade of decline or at most stagnation. As Prime Minister who cares, but as Minister of Finance he’s got to go

Everything back to front in this country

    LIVED = DEVIL
    LIVE = EVIL
Four men lost their lives in quick succession, all connected to water!

Have we called the wrath of the Almighty upon us by messing with His message to remind us for ever of Satan?

It is interesting that the only two countries named after the diablotin bird (so-called because of its shrill, haunting call) are Dominica and Haiti.

How presumptuous in the first place! Morne aux Diables and Morne Diablotin were there long before pastor Augustine and his committee and will be there long after they are gone.It are feeble men, who think they can change destiny by changing the name of a mountain.

    DNO Admin

Thanks for sharing the results of the poll. So, what’s the next move? Is DNO Admin going to formally present the results to this so-called high-powered top-heavy committee? Those member sof the publlic who participated and voted NO will be eagerly looking forward to how Government responds to the results of the poll.

    • Realist
      December 21, 2012

There is no need for dno to formally present it to the govt. all parties involved have read it already. So they know.

Good job DNO!!! Glad you take the pulse of the people on such an important issue. Now, the ones who plan to change the names of mountains that were named b4 their English Colonial Masters, must understand that the majority counts today. Thank You!

    • budman
      December 21, 2012

maybe they were named before their English colonial Masters but by whom? their FRENCH colonial Masters?? so its really just an exchange of European colonisation. However, I voted no to the name change.

So the question is; what now? since the poll is a representative sample of the general public, will the authority reconsider it initial move to change the name?
Or will this democratic way of sharing our genuine concern about current issues in our country be sidelined and laughed at by the arrogant and shallow minded people in the government and politically bias select committee?
    Oh well, who cares….

We trying to promote eco-tourism. The majority of the stay over tourists who come to Dominica come here to hike the trails, experience nature at its best and learn about the history of this wonderfully mysterious island. You remove the name, you remove a massive part of the history. You remove the name, you remove the appeal.

An avid eco-tourist would be more keen to hike Devil’s Mountain than Health Mountain. “Come on guys, let’s go climb the Mountain of Peace”

Thanks for taking a public poll on this pertinent current issue. Whilst you state that your poll is not scientific. One must laud the approach as being rather definitely rational. The 2/3s margin of nays is definitely a statement that the powers-that-be should take into consideration.

Whilst many people may be ambivalent about the reason for the name change in itself, the real slap in the face of the populace was the conniving and non-inclusive secrecy employed in executing that change upon the people. In the end they will want people to rally behind something they have purposely excluded them from.

There are costs involved with this gross affront, including financial and sentimental, all to be borne by the longsuffering natives, in the meanwhile the secretive cabal continue to plot their next ‘diabolical’ venture on the people of

Could you conduct a poll to see what Dominicans think of changing the name of the island please. I know Dominica got the name before the Dominican Republic, but too many people don’t know this island exists. It might generate some deperately needed publicity and it might stop so much mail going astray.

    • Cerberus
      December 20, 2012

Not such a bad idea! I have thought for some time that we could use our position at the UN to petition for the name DOMINICA to be used exclusively for us. We have a valid claim since we’ve had this name long before the Dominican Republic assumed theirs. We should portray ourselves for what we are, a small island state of few resources, which suffers because a larger nation has usurped our rightful name. There would be protests from the Dominican Republic, of course but even if we don’t win that appeal, imagine the goodwill and attention this would generate for our country! Everybody loves to back an underdog. News channels would carry it globaslly:” David against Goliath for the right to their name”. Let’s try it. What have we got to lose.

      • antedote for fools
        December 20, 2012

The island had a name before being called Dominica we can revert too it.

        December 21, 2012

what have we to lose? our credibility for starters. nobody likes the underdog when it comes to UN matters and where size and money and trade and most importantly votes count. btw the Spanish territory’s correct name is La republica dominicana as ours is the Commonwealth of Dominica. it really isn’t that close. nobody and no news network would waste advertising air time on this crap.

DOMINICA = Day of the Lord (i.e. Sunday) This is good enough for me. If we must change, make the Dominican Republic pay for it and call ourselves “Sunday Island”. It is upbeat, cheerful and easy to remember.

There needs to be a country code on the address to distinguish which is which but still it is hard to believe that the people who work at the post office do not know geography a lot of postal workers in the US do not know that there two Dominica’s in the Caribbean.
