Dominican journalist Carlisle Jno Baptiste is learning first hand about the inroads being made by gays and lesbians in the United States.
Jno Baptiste is representing Dominica News Online on a Foreign Press Centre reporting tour on “A Developing Narrative Lesbian, Gay, bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Rights and Issues in the United States”.
The DNO reporter and several others from 16 different countries are hearing from key stakeholders across the political spectrum in the US on LGBT issues and rights.
On the opening day of the tour journalists were updated on the inroads gays and lesbians have made in government, politics, media, the military and education.
On day one of the trip in Washington DC, the group met with editorial staff of the Washington Blade including editor Kevin Naff, and later visited the Department of Defense at the Pentagon.
The Washington Blade described as the only “Gay” paper, is produced weekly.
Naff explained that the paper had survived “trying times over the years” and suggested that its reputation was impeccable.
“We are very happy at the decision of President Obama, as a Gay paper we have always had a Gay Reporter at the White House since the years of President Reagan but during press conferences no one has yet to call on a Gay Reporter,” Naff recalled.
He said they were “kicked out” of the White House during the second term of the Bush administration whose officials were very “hostile and antagonistic”.
Naff is optimistic that while the upcoming presidential election will be “close”, the Obama camp will win.
“Same sex marriage is legal in six US states while in others it is not, our country still has a long way to come….if Romney wins we (as gays) are doomed for lots of bad things will happen to us,” he said.
“Mitt Romney is like a dinosaur, we can’t think of Obama losing this election, his latest decision was honest, straight and helped a lot of people now come out openly and so we have endorsed him for another term,” Naff, who has been gay all his life, remarked with a smile.
While observing that the issue is “deeply rooted in religion” the newspaper editor insisted that like everyone else, gays have a right to live a “normal life.”
Among laws he expects a new Obama regime to tackle if the incumbent wins a second term, is a 1974 Act “Employment none discrimination Act” and the “Defensive Marriage Act” which he says greatly “hurts and discriminates against the LBGT community”.
This is maximum over-kill. Gays are NOT discriminated against in Dominica, this is a predominantly catholic society; they just want to marry and ought to take it up with the catholic church.

I am native Dominican. Maybe we should start kicking out the Africans while we are at it. Would that make you feel a bit of what a gay person feels? The whole island does not sympathize with the ones who were sold on “old world” religion. Most of the time, the ones screaming this mess are closeted and probably live in a lying marriage with the opposite sex- all the time cursing out the “gays”. Celebrities do this all the time. Some people are very showy, so these “morality things” are most important to them. It’s hard to believe that some are even stupid enough to think that being gay is not a natural occurrence but a learned thing. “Old world” is full of hate.

Because the legalization of gay marriage is fairly new, there is no data to support your claim that the divorce rate among Gays is high. @ + – My friend, God deems a lot of things wrong, but society accepts them: Murder, drunkenness, stealing, covetousness, infidelity, not loving our neighbours as ourselves, etc., do me a favour and take a look at the 10 Commandments and I can assure you that you won’t be so selective in identifying what is deemed wrong and what is not.
My wife and I have been happily married for over three years and have a baby on the way. Gays getting married in no way undermines our marriage; if anything, expanding that freedom only strengthens the fact that our marriage reflects who we are and the choices that we have made. Our marriage would not be made better by gays and lesbians not being allowed to be married.
My uncle was gay. He was my grandmother’s brother, and he lived during a time when gays were harassed or thrown in jail in the U.S. He could not have been attracted to women if you held a gun to his head. He died a lonely man, not ever having the freedom to be who he was in his own life. No one else’s life was made better by his being made worse.
Now that laws are different, and even many states recognize same-sex marriage, we have many gay friends and colleagues in the U.S. who are open in who they are. My experience is that they are no different in any other regard from anyone else.
I doubt many people in Dominica have actually met an openly gay or lesbian person, yet they have very strong opinions about them, and seem to think they’re the worst kind of people. For those who think it’s sinful, that’s not a question of law but of faith. That’s between you and your church, and does not concern anyone who does not go to your church. And again, no one’s life is made better by gays and lesbians’ lives being made worse.

It’s the “Employment Non-Discrimination Act,” not the “Employment none discrimination Act”. And it’s the “Defense of Marriage Act”, or DOMA, not “Defensive Marriage Act”. All of this could have easily been checked online.
Within the U.S., each of the 50 states makes its own laws regarding marriage, but each state is generally expected to give legal effect to marriages legally performed in other states. The Defense of Marriage Act is a federal law making an exception to that rule, so that states are not required to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state.

There is little scientific proof to confirm that. Studies were done in the early 1990’s and homosexuality was claimed to be genetic,but this has since been “debunked”. There is more evidence to suggest that its psychological than genetic. And i’m being very logical here, not homophobic.
@ Valhalla – When I was a child, we had a neighbour with several children. One young chap, used to come over to play doll house with us and he always wanted to be the Mommy. Today, he is a gay man; was that psycholigical? I don’t think so. Why would God say that homosexuals will not inherit His kingdowm but create them that way? People were NOT born that way. This is spiritual, and the ruling demon of sexual immorality is behind this. There are so many homosexuals who hate themselves, not because of society, but because deep down inside they do not want to be this way, but they can’t help it so they stop fighting it. They can’t help it because they are fighting a demon, and you cannot fight a spirit with the flesh. That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in, and if you do not have him, then you’re going to think that it’s ok to be gay. I have seen people delivered from the spirit of homosexuality and are now happy, and married with children. God showed me this spirit one time in a young man and my heart was breaking for him, just like how God’s heart is breaking when He sees what His children are allowing the devil to do. That young man was delivered in the name of JESUS while the spirit was screaming “NO NO HE IS MINE.” Alas, there are so many more to go!

This is not a mere difference of opinion. This is similar to saying that you would not vote for a man because he supports women’s rights to contraception–even though you despise the other candidate. If May is actually a Romney supporter and was so from the beginning, fine, but the picture I have is that May has simply decided to say “screw Obama” because of the gay rights issue, regardless of whether or not May cares for or even knows much about Romney.
