Douglas Charles Airport reopens

Damaged fence at the airport

The Ministry of Public Works and Ports has announced that the Douglas-Charles Airport was reopened from 1:00 pm on September 6, 2017.

The airport was said to be minimally affected by the passage of Hurricane Irma to the north of the island on Tuesday.

Chairman of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) Phoenix Belfield stated that the eastern fence of the facility was damaged by high waves and also one of the entrance lights was affected.

“We are working assiduously to ensure that, that is restored,” he stated.

Belfield noted that Chief Technical Officer at the Ministry of Public Works, along with DASPA support maintenance staff, are working to ensure the normalization of services at the airport.

In terms of flights, he revealed that LIAT, WINAIR and Seaborne Airlines have suspended all flights for today and pointed out flight restoration does not depend on DASPA

“It depends on the risk that LIAT and the other airlines perceive and as of today LIAT, WINAIR and Seaborne, our principal air carriers, have all suspended flights for the day,” he explained.

Belfield pointed out that Woodbridge Bay and the Longhouse ports are open for business.

“So those persons who [are] wishing to go and clear cargo or do any businesses at those ports can do so today,” he revealed.

He, however, said that there are no ferry services to the island today.

“As it relates to the ferry service because we are experiencing high seas, we are not expecting any ferry today and also there will be no cargo shipments today,” Belfield remarked.

Phoenix Belfield? Hell, I thought Benoit Bardouille was in charge of the seaport- and airports. What does a hot dog seller know about airports and seaport? You mean Skerrit have Phoenix keep an eye on Benoit? Ridiculous. Too many jobs for the boys. especially the Possie Nostra. Isn’t that the same Phoenix that used to work for Bubbles? Boy, if you are close to the fire, you must keep warm.

I do not recognize this airport. I know that Dominica has two airports; canefield and melville hall airport. I do not identify with this dog last Charles nick name. Why are they naming and renaming everything after their associates? I guess if you can’t paint it in red then you name it in red. That’s very disgusting

I also cannot identify with that swamp neither! Instead of “Douglas-las Skerrit” or is it Roosevelt Skerrit, build an International Airport he allowed Ralph Gonsalze tomake a jackass out of him.

So, he installed landing lights, change the name, get it ready to coincide with the opening of Argyle International in St. Vincent, to fool his dumb supports that St. Vincent, and Dominica International Airport open on the same day.

What do you know the real Int. Airport in St. Vincent came into operation five years after sir Doug-las Skerrit opened his swamp at Melville Hall.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Since Irma is such a dangerous and destructive hurricane, one to have reason to fear, its winds alone would obviously affect Dominica. It is like it breathed strongly on Dominica.
The name Irma, as Erika and some others did, will certainly be put to rest for good; never to be used again.
