On September 20, 2010, the University of the West Indies Open Campus Dominica witnessed the election of its first ever Student Guild Executive. The elections were conducted via a democratic process where all registered students (irrespective of mode of learning or level – certificate, diploma, associate degree, undergraduate degree, and postgraduate degree) were invited to vote for the various candidates.
As a result of the elections, and a subsequent reshuffling in keeping with the rules of the Guild Constitution, six (6) students will hold the following prestigious and responsible offices on the Guild Chapter executive, effective the date of the elections:
Chair – Ms. Nadia Riviere
Deputy Chair – Ms. Carlene Warner
Secretary – Ms. Amanda Ducreay
Treasurer – Mr. Ray Franklin
Assistant Treasurer/Secretary – Ms. Elora Riley
Public Relations/Communications Officer – Mr. Garmon Graham
All registered students pursuing a course of study at the Open Campus will be full members of the Guild of Students, similar to what has obtained at the brick and mortar campuses at Cave Hill (Barbados), Mona (Jamaica) and St. Augustine (Trinidad & Tobago) over the years. In particular, the newly elected executive has promised to mount activities and work with the Head, Dr. Francis O. Severin and Site staff in order to enhance the general quality of life for students at the Dominica Site. The foregoing includes providing a range of activities to allow students to become actively engaged in student governance and in so doing enjoy and benefit from their University experience. This venture will undoubtedly present an opportunity to foster friendship building, contribute to personal growth and development and, certainly, the development of the Open Campus Dominica Site.
The UWI has long been a democratic and participatory institution and it is to be noted that elected officers of the overall University Guild of Students, of which the Open Campus Guild of Students is a part, represent students on all the main decision making committees of the University including its planning, finance and academic committees.
The roles of the Regional Guild of Students at each Campus includes, but is not limited to: (a) providing representation on all queries and matters of concern; (b) providing support in any way possible; (c) creating an avenue for students’ integration and socialization; and (d) generally improving the Campus and University experience for students. It will also provide a structured framework for students’ participation in the development of their particular Site.
The newly elected Guild Chapter executive of the Open Campus Dominica Site has listed some of its primary objectives for the academic year 2010 – 2011, as follows:
To increase the general student body and public’s awareness of the Student Guild Chapter.
To organize fundraising activities and wholesome entertainment events, ensuring a safe and professional environment while promoting educational, cultural and social interaction.
To provide an avenue for improved communications between faculty, staff and students.
To be the entrusted ‘Voice of the Students’ by representing their concerns and ensuring an optimum education environment within its powers.
The Guild Chapter makes an appeal for the support and good will of all students and stakeholders in order to ensure the success of the organization.

About the Open Campus: The newest campus of the 60-year-old University of the West Indies (UWI) was formally launched in Antigua & Barbuda in June 2008. The UWI Open Campus is an amalgamation of three former departments of the UWI – the Office of the Board for Non-Campus Countries & Distance Education (BNNCDE), the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), the UWI Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC), and the Tertiary Level Institutions Unit (TLIU). The UWI Open Campus offers multi-mode teaching and learning services through virtual and physical site locations across the Caribbean region. There are currently 42 site locations of the Open Campus in the English-speaking Caribbean. The UWI Open Campus offers an open and flexible learning environment for pre-university, professional development, undergraduate and graduate courses and programmes and other services both online and in blended format. We offer a three-tiered registration structure to suit particular needs and educational backgrounds. The system allows our students to move and transfer within the entire University system to reach the required standard. All programmes and courses at the Open Campus have been designed in direct response to a need for high quality continuing and professional development in many key areas in the Caribbean and global markets.
Now tell me why all of this is happening after I left the University of the West Indies. Anyway the Executive has my support. Nadia, the mantle is in your hand. I am sure you will carry it a long way. Congrats
I would like to congratulate the newly elected executive members. I believe in you all and you definitiely have my support. Especially Nadia, I really believe that you deserve to Chair the group. You are indeed a leader. JB must be very proud. Hats off girly.
CONGRATS TO ALL. I could only have voted for the Chair- Nadia. Kudos
Could someone enlighten me as to what exactly ‘Open Campus’ means?
Congratulations to the elected executive members of the guild. Go out and represent. Ensure that students at home are able to maximize their true accademic potential as the University of the West indies continues to provide the opportunity of Tertiary level education to numerous Dominicans. Nadia you are doing quite well for yourself.
Hats off to the Dominica Open Campus leg of Guild executives. I trust that you will serve as a channel to handle our concerns efficiently whilst also incorporating the “fun-factor”, to make our experience at UWI a more holistic one (as UWI so rightly advocates). I am committed to giving my assistance and support to the executives in anyway possible.
Nadia……………..Ray………..now that you are on the executive………………when will be getting our vending machine??? LOL
great job guys, so very proud….
Ladies are taking the lead. 2/3 of this pioneering body is composed of females. How does this resemble the sexual distribution among the students? Is it that 2/3 of the student population are females or is this just a reflection of our times that our males are not of the leadership ilk?
Way u go Amanda!!!!!!!!!
Hold dem G.G.nuff raspect
I welcome the Guild and they surely have my support.
Nadia I like your hairstyle sis.
