A wide cross section of society came to show their respects at Doctrove’s funeral

Hordes of mourners from all walks of life including government ministers, cricket umpires,  members of the Dominica Police Force, religious leaders, family, friends and supporters flocked to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Goodwill on Friday afternoon to pay their last respects to a man of many hats, former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Hildreth Lordon Doctrove.

Doctrove died on September 18 at his Green’s Lane residence. He was 94 years old.

Born February 20, 1920, he was a Lay Associate in Pastoral Care, Coroner, Justice of the Peace, Chairman of Visiting Justice of the Prison, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chairman of the Housing and Lands Board, among other positions.

He is survived by his wife and eight children including former international cricket umpire, Billy Doctrove, cricket commentator, Chauser Doctrove, former customs officer, Fitzroy Doctrove.

He has been described by his family as a gentle giant, humorous and a good listener.

In his homily, Monsignor Eustace Thomas described Doctrove as one who loved others and not just himself.

“I never saw him disfigured or angry,” Thomas said, “a man who brought joy into his family; a man who loved other people, who loved Dominica..”

Among those who attended the funeral mass include acting Prime Minister Reginald Austrie, parliamentary representative for Roseau North Julius Timothy, Police Chief Daniel Carbon and former Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence.

The former police officer was buried at the Roseau Catholic cemetery.

If Mr. Doctrove held all these public posts, why didn’t he get a State/official funeral? how does a Dominican get one of these anyway? Did his family turn down the offer?

why was he not given an official funeral? he contributed so much more to dominica than the late bishop.

Hello, the Bishop’s soul is at rest. He was ushered into Paradise handsomely. Please consider for a moment this question. Should you die today, where will you spend eternity? Allow my Bishop to rest in eternal peace. Accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour and repent from all your sins and one day you will be re-united with Jesus. ONLT THE THINGS DONE FOR CHRIST WILL LAST.

Profound sympathy to the family. Someone I knew extremely well in my childhood and adult yrs as he and my dad we officers.
One observation though! He is survived by his wife and eight children including former international cricket umpire, Billy Doctrove, cricket commentator, Chauser Doctrove, former customs officer, Fitzroy Doctrove the other 5 are not as high profile hence are nameless? LMAO.! Nicki’s piece is very applicable here. No offense family.

Ya all that ,no mention is made of Trove the Black Power advocate former soldier in T& T and in the uprising in T& T that kind of fame is not mentioned. Trove was an avantguard Black Power advocate in the 70’s.
