Two news items, which appeared in the US press, have generated some debate among Dominicans as to whether the island’s name is being used intentionally, maliciously by scammers or by mistake.
It is no secret that Dominica has been confused with the Dominican Republic in the US but these news items beg someone to take a second look.
The first item appeared in the Detroit Free Press on November 29, 2011. The newspaper reported that a producer of pornographic movies sued nine people in a US District Court on the grounds that they downloaded and distributed most of the company’s films from its website.
According to the Detroit Free Press the name of the pornographic company is Third Degree Films and is “based in Dominica in the Caribbean.” The newspaper reported that some of the films include titles such as “Interracial sex for cash” and “Rough Sex for Sick Cash.”
Dominica News Online has been trying to contact the editors of the Detroit Free Press on this matter, but to no avail.
The second news item appeared in Courthouse News Service and it involves a case in Broward County, Florida. According to that publication, which appeared on December6, Joseph Elkind is suing two men, Randolf Schneider and Steven Aaron White, who he said told him “they could get him an Internet gambling license from the nation of Dominica.”
The publication said Elkind wired the two men $400,000: $50,000 for the casino license and the rest for “other joint business ventures with White and Schneider.”
Courthouse News Service said the men put the money in a “alter ego company” called 2 Waves and used it to personal use by purchasing a Mercedes and other personal items.
However it was later discovered that there was no casino license from Dominica.
This matter is still ongoing and DNO has contacted Courthouse News Service and is still awaiting a response.

I have met numerous people from the Dominican Republic who say they are from Dominica and call themselves Dominicans. In one particular conversation, I told the lady that I was from Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean and she had no idea where I was talking about. She said that they prefer to say Dominica because Dominican Republic is too long to say and obviously this creates a lot of confusion.
And even if this article was pertaining to our Dominica, scam artists thrive on using names of countries that they deem unknown. These people may have never been to our island or have affiliation with anyone there. They just use the name to benefit their scam.

Just a heads up Hatians that live in other countries like SXM when asked where are you from they say Dominica for those who speak english very well you ask them which part they give you some funny name and you like I never heard that name when you come to your senses you ask commonwealth or republic then they say republic. Two issues surfaced when I read this article. Number one is the possibility of a name change for Dominica and the economic citizenship program.
The idea of a name change for Dominica has come up for discussion several times especially as we are always confused with the Dominican Republic, the citizens of which country who are called Dominicans. I lived outside of Dominica and every-time I tell people I am from Dominica, they ask me “Dominican Republic”?-“You speak Spanish”? And then I have to make a differentiation between Dominica and Dominican Republic. differentiate to them. Too often are we mislabeled for things done by nationals from Dominican Republic. Do we want this to continue and the name of our country dragged in the dust?
Why is a name change so much of a problem when the name creates identity problems for us? Name changes have worked for other countries so why can’t it work for us. Burma’s name has been changed to Myanmar. Do we recall names like Bombay and Calcutta in India? we no longer hear those names and everyone have accepted and recognized name such as Mumbai and Kolkata. If it worked for those countries, why can’t it work for us?
The next issue relating to the economic citizenship program. Is it possible that some of the crimes being committed by so-called Dominicans are committed by persons benefiting from our economic citizenship programme? I know there has been much talk about that program but the authorities should be careful about whom they give our passports to. It could cost us more as a country than the amount of money that some of those unscrupulous persons pay for bearing our passports and our name.
I would strongly support both a name change for Dominica and a review of the economic citizenship program.

The island of Dominica, its name has been mistaken for Dominican Republic and vice versa. Ask someone who never heard of Dominica. If you are asked what country you are from and you reply Dominica, you will receive the response, Dominican Republic. I have had this happen to me on many occasions. Even some Jamaicans do not know about Dominica and where it is located. I once worked with a Jamaican woman and it happened to me. I replied, You are from the West Indies, Jamaica and you do not know that there is an island called Dominica which is in the West Indies.
While residing in DA I had pen pals from different islands. One was from T & T. I received a letter from that person who wrote, “I heard your country has a lot of trouble.” It was not until I came to reside in Canada and as stated above, I realized that this pen pal was referring to Dominican Republic. Some of them may not have had much schooling and therefore never studied about the islands.
Dominican nationals must beware when conducting business with foreigners overseas. This is a wake-up call. I hope it was what we refer to it as mistaken identity, namely the island.
If they conduct business with such people get as much detail as possible from the person or people including their place of residence. I hope that they will be honest.
These days all sorts of crooks try to conduct business over the telephone and the Internet. They will use names of people and names of countries which have nothing to do with their transactions and businesses and put innocent people in trouble.
