MP for the Marigot Constituency and Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, has denied claims that he is using his position to obtain scholarships under a program initiated by the Marigot Development Corporation (MDC).
Last week the MDC said it had secured $6.1-million for 16 students to study in the US and among them, two were Linton’s children.
Detractors were quick to pounce.
“Linton not once you can think of the people you represent and put their interest before yours?” one person wrote on Facebook. “You take two scholarships for yourself (your children) one time, you couldn’t say one for me and one for another poor person from marigot (sic) child?”
Another wrote on another social media platform, “At least the politician from Marigot could have allowed one other student from Marigot to get help instead of sending his both kids.”
But Linton said on Q95 last week he has absolutely no say in how the scholarships are given out.
“Scholarships are at the sole discretion of the schools and the schools alone, it’s strictly a merit based system,” he stated. “The Parliament Representative has no scholarships at all to give out or to hand out to anybody under the program, he cannot give any scholarship to his children or to anybody else.”
He said the program gives students the opportunity to prepare themselves and to seek entry into US boarding schools and “based on merit, based on their academic achievements, based on the quality of their interviews, in their interaction with the school’s admissions personnel, decisions are made about the extent of the financial support that is given to them to go to the schools, that is all.”
He stated that supporters of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) have gone on social media and suggested that there were “scholarships available for Marigot children and Lennox Linton took two for his children instead of taking one and leaving one for another child.”
“For the Labour Party to be concocting this story now about Lennox Linton trying to suggest that I am using my position as Parliamentary Representative to benefit myself and my family is really unfortunate and the perpetrators of this must stop it,” Linton remarked.
DNO made several attempts to contact Michael Pascal, President of the MDC on Monday morning but was unsuccessful.
However in response to a blog post on DNO, Pascal wrote, “Politicians in Marigot, La Plaine or any other constituency have no say in who gets scholarships. Scholarships are at the sole discretion of the schools and the schools alone, it’s strictly a merit based system.”

Lennox, I am a supporter of DLP, as we all have our political preference.
I am surprised that some people make such a negative issue about your children having obtained a scholarship which they merited.
It is fitting to state what P.M. Skerrit recently said: “Leave children out of politics.” I wholeheartedly endorse that, even though it is something I knew.
I am informing you and your wife, do your best to pay the critics no mind. Keep in mind, people are people and some are narrow-minded and spew negative words no matter what Party they support.
What is important your twins got a scholarship and for a higher learning. I am pleased. As children, they are in a hopefully safe and peaceful environment where they could take full advantage of this God-given golden opportunity. Children need such an atmosphere for growing and learning.

It was not until I read the person who disclosed the recipients traveled to St. Lucia to take the exam which qualifies them to bet the scholarship. I sat the entrance exam as an alternate,but because I placed first,the school demanded that I be sent because of merit. DNO I’m sure you could do a little research to find out how these students did on the National Assessment in relation to the other almost 2000 students nationally. Also, I would want to point out that those students did not attend primary school in the Marigot constituency(if I’m wrong I stand corrected), so if this is a Marigot thing why is it these students were given priority over the Marigot constituency students?

If your comment regarding St. Lucia is correct, I must say thanks for shedding this bit of truth. As for the person who said Education is the key for getting out of poverty, that may not always be true. If one is academically educated especially in a place like Dominica where the educated are dependent on government and politics, and fail to venture into business, and technology, poverty might be their fate too!
Education it is proven is a key factor in breaking poverty.
Merit based scholarships are great- the brighter and more eloquent students will earn them and if all goes well not contribute to our growing poverty levels.
But what of our poorer and by extension not so bright and eloquent students? Those very ones that so many in their comments wrongly think Mr. Linton should have given up one of his kids 2 scholarships for. Yes they will remain poor and the cycle of poverty will continue for them. UNLESS
Another Michael Pascal ( a very bright chap), makes the sacrifice to raise a parallel 6.4 million dollars to provide scholarships for the poorer, less eloquent whose grades do not allow them to enter the top schools but allows them to continue higher education at some school. And
It is not enough as Parl Rep for Mr. Linton to say he has no power over MDC scholarships which is true, but he must identify potential poor students and use his gift of oratory to help prepare them for next…
Wait for Linton do do something for poor people, that you will never see. Linton only likes to deal with affluent people. Case in point, Marigot had mayfest with constituents, artists etc whom did he take pics with and post on his page? Artists of course. He is naturally a snob and he maybe does not even realize it. I went to England where I studied the same; came to Los Angeles California, and first attended National Technical School from where I began my home study, prior to attending college and University, and accomplished four scientific degrees. As of today I think Welch who once taught school in Wesley do not have a single college degree. Never underestimate people, especially where it pertains to politics.
Finally, Shortly after Welch told me I “cannot” an Antiguan came to my house to drink down my rum, he saw with something he could not identify, he asks me ” ah wa dat.” I told him I am building a Radio, he laughed, I built it and it worked, played like hell; however, when his old Singer Television built in Trinidad in those days broke down, he showed up to my place of business with it.
I fixed it; when he asks me what’s my charge I told Francis, for you it is free, about a month later he died! It is stupid to ever underestimate…
You are talking with forked tongue. Mr. Linton’s party is not the one governing the country. On the other hand the government could do as you suggest and finance scholarships for our poorer students. For the less eloquent there is nothing wrong with expanding vocational training like we used to have at the Dupigny college, shut down by Mr. Skerrit when he was Minister of Education, in favour of the DSC.

Are you serious? Doesn’t the man live in DA? Doesn’t he pay Vat and all other fees? There are many ways to make a contribution to your country. Even I, as a non-resident of DA, contribute to Dominica when I visit and in other ways. Parents will obviously be happy for their children when they excel. There is no doubt that Linton and his wife are happy for their children, even though they will miss their presence. I can imagine those long distance phone calls, texts and emails on both sides.
No matter what your political preference and which Party you support, let us be gracious and feel happy for the Linton’s. Their twins will be together, in a boarding school, hopefully well taken care of and will receive further discipline too. We expect they will also be protected and safe throughout their studies and thereafter.
One with a godly heart cannot help but feel happy for them and their children, the twins. That is the way God wants it as well, from us Christians. Let us all, as Dominicans, wherever we reside, wish them all well. I do!

By the way I got a few tiny screwdrivers at Dollarama. I recently went there. I saw some but I have those sizes. I spoke to a supervisor about it. She said they do have small ones. They are in the eye glasses section. I was surprised and happy to know that. She asked one of the sales persons to get one for me. They are in a package. I thought that store has nearly everything. I may not need it for a long time, if ever. Hope one day it may come in handy or for someone else. Guess the price? $1.25 plus tax!

If this was granted to high ranking DLP supporters children. There would be a call for an other D Day (Day of Death) demonstration.
The sad truth is that a lot of those high ranking DLP supporters cannot meet the entry requirements…..But they will still get scholarships to attend Gramlin and Mid-Western State University. Just look at the list of students at those universities and you will see who qualifies.

The issue is Leadership. as a leader Mr. Linton could have allowed one child to apply for a scholarship. How would he know that both kids qualified had they not both applied? What you are failing to understand is that this is a process….not a one mans’s decision. To qualify, one must apply and go through the process – then if you qualify you are awarded the scholarship. Why would you turn around, after having gone through the process and qualified, and say “thank you but my daddy say is only one of his twins he sending on the scholarship because he is a politician in Dominican and want people to say good things about him”?
The fact is, had only one of his kids gone – you all would have still found fault with that!

The President of the Margot Development Corporation explicitly stated that the scholarships were awarded strictly on merit and there was no political interference, just paraphrasing. People are just relentlessly mischievous , malicious and I may further add begrudging. I am not a supporter of Linton nor Skerrit but Mr. Linton has been subjected to much horrendous abuse, specious accusations and unjust discrimination. Despite all this his children have excelled and still there are some who want to cast aspersions on them for achieving excellence. Leave the man’s children out of your tribal politics. I have known about this scholarship since its inception and it is really based on academics. This is a situation where both his kids have excelled, applied and both granted the merit based scholarship. This happens in the US with twins, triplets etc. There were twins last year who got into all the IVY leagues schools in America and all they received was praises from everyone. Why can’t we do the same for our very own?
I’ve received a scholarship too. For someone to qualify for a scholarship, they have to meet both requirements, high GPA AND a very low income of their parents or themselves. How can Lennox children more qualify than all those financially disabled people in Marigot, who NEED that scholarship for their children who are SMART and lack opportunity??? No way! That is pure inconsiderate for those Workers people who more need it for their own children.

What is wrong with his children getting scholarships they worked for. All the kids had to take classes since September, sit exams in St lucia and conduct interviews with various schools. The successful ones were victorious and received scholarships. Lennox can’t give the scholarship to ANYONE. you think those schools know who the HELL lennox Linton is, Give me a break. Those children work for their scholarship. How much PS, and minister children on scholarships some not even completing their degrees.

So what is wrong with the children being successful in obtaining scholarships through a program he has no control over? This is not a RED CLINIC and praise God they were chosen on merit.
It is important to note that not one of the children of the Labour Party Cabal has exceled to the point of recognition over the last 18 years.

Marigot Village and our people are very proud of the children and those who got thru the scholarship program, the Linton children deserved the chances just like any others so those who are speaking ill against education it’s sad,. The schools select the students and thank God the Government of Dominica is not part of the process or MDC .
It was nice to hear students and parents calling in and expressing how they activate and got into the program and how well their children are doing.
Dominicans are so full of hate and jealousy of Mr. Linton they have decided to attach his children and that’s how far we have gone, Education is part of Linton up bringing both parents were highly qualified teachers not only in Marigot but other Villages too.
