Marpin board to give final decision on retrenchment of workers

marpin logoMarpin 2K4 employees who were given letters of redundancy on February 27, 2013, are back on the job today but a question mark still hangs over their future with the company.

The workers received letters from Marpin on Monday, informing them that the company had decided to withdraw the redundancy letters.

A copy of the letter obtained by Dominica News Online states in part, “During discussions held on February 27, 2013, it was decided to withdraw the said letter thereby recalling you to work with no loss of pay during your absence.”

Kertiste Augustus of the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union, WAWU, which representers the workers, said that this latest decision by Marpin followed discussions between the union and the company.

He said the letters, which would have made the workers redundant effective February 28, were put on hold pending further discussion with the board this morning.

He said following that discussion, the union will be notified as to the board’s final decision which he expects will happen sometime between late this afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Augustus stated that depending on what is contained in this decision, further discussions will be held with management in relation to the implementation of the decision.

Dominica News Online has learned that Marpin’s decision to recall the workers was based on the company’s failure to give the union sufficient notice of its action to make them redundant.

DNO will keep following this story and bring you developments as they occur.

So this withdrawal of the letters was on a technicality? Why did the Union insist on Notice if the end result is the same? and what if some employees become vindictive about all this and hurt/sabotage the organization while on recall?

one thing Marpin must not try to do is to raise their fees to pay their workers because already ppl paying 80.50 to see nothing.

What a joke!!! So these guys don’t know under what conditions they can let people go?

And they are calling them back so that they can give them the right amount of notice before they let them go again?

It would be more humane to pay them and let them stay home instead of having them go through that emotional rollercoaster.

Little wonder Marpin is in such a financial mess.
