Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has called on Dominicans to have a more positive outlook of the island and has blasted those who, he said, is trying to destroy the efforts of those who are trying to build Dominica.
He was speaking at a signing ceremony for the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement for the China-aided West Coast Road post-Erika Rehabilitation Project on Thursday morning against the background of rumors of unsafe drinking water and the presence of swine flu in Dominica.
“We need to have a positive outlook of our country and we need to continue to speak positively of our country,” he said. “And those of you who are engaging yourselves in the propagation and dissemination of all of these unfounded malicious comments about our country, whether it is about the quality of the water in our country or whether there is swine flu in Dominica, all of which are not true, we should desist from doing these things,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that negative things said about Dominica are not going to affect him alone.
“Let us understand that this is not going to affect a person whom you call Roosevelt Skerrit alone,” he remarked. ‘For many of us in this country, for the majority of us in this country, this will be the only place we can call home, we will be able to call home and therefore what you sow that is what you shall reap.”
Skerrit said sensible Dominicans should not remain quiet while certain elements seek to destroy the country.
“We the sensible people in this country must not remain quiet and silent when there are elements and characters in our country, who live within and outside our country, are seeking to destroy the efforts of the committed Dominicans to building a better and more prosperous Dominica,” he said. “And we must not take pride in propagating falsehood about our country and if a story is negative about Dominica why forward it? Why have a mass forwarding if it is not a positive story about Dominica?”
He even added a Christian spin to the whole thing.
“If we say we are a Christian nation and if we say that we believe in the Almighty Father, whatever name you call Him, then why aren’t you behaving as such and behave like a civilized people, a people who truly believe that this country is a Christian nation and who believe in the respect for each other…” he noted.
The Prime Minister called for a change of attitude.
“We have to change our attitude in this because we cannot rely on friends like China for our development, they are here to assist us, but the bulk of the responsibility rests on our shoulders as Dominicans, to play our part as small as it is when you add it up, if it is positive, it can contribute to a better Dominica,” he said.
