The Ministry of Tourism and Urban Renewal announces the completion of the reinforcement and upgrade to the Wotten Waven Foot Bridge, effective Monday 5th December, 2016.

On Thursday, December 1st, 2016 an attraction was closed due to the collapse of the foot bridge.

The announcement of the reopening of the Wotten Waven Foot Bridge follows safety checks and reinforcements to ensure a safe experience.

“The upgrades to the Wotten Waven Foot Bridge demonstrated how inter-governmental agencies are linked and can collaborate productively. I want to thank the staff and management of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Forestry division for a job well done,” declared Tourism Minister Robert Tonge.

The Minister went on further to say, “Although the popular Foot Bridge is located on private property, I felt that the country had a vested interest in seeing the swift rehabilitation of this very important authentic aspect of Dominica’s Tourism product, so we did not hesitate to partner in this initiative.”

The Discover Dominica Authority will continue to be vigilant year-round to ensure that all Tourism attraction sites, both private and public are accessible and safe, securing Dominica in that number one spot of the best place in the Caribbean for Eco Tourism.

What cochoni talk about inter-agency collaboration. So after the wooden bridge fall with the tourists then? what inspection was done before the opening of the season? Pure incompetence. If what we see, some wood nailed to form a platform and that could not be done before the crash, well, well, well. Ministry coming out with an asinine press release to say what….boasting about negligence and incompetence? Continue to prepare for the Roseau central seat. That is all. That is all. That is all and receiving a salary for doing what?

happy that the bridge is repaired. the matter is not to repair a bridge after it has fallen. the external tourist business is fragile and so it is vital that these venues are checked regularly by trained technician. I once took a white visitor to Middleham Falls. razon grass cut our legs. I called the PS and informed him of the matter and that the man had bought a site pass, the Dr PS gave some rediculous excuses and I said God help us. Dominicans visit the sites and so we should not await an incident to happen to run to do fixing. Someone could have been seriously injured on this bridge and we would say, we sorry we. If we experience an earthquake, who go around checking those bridges? I visited the Boiling Lake several times and the track is most of the time dangerous. there should be constant repairs to those private and public venues. Govt agency does not have morale fortitude to chastise the private sector as Govt facilities are nor better. An agency will be sued.

    Great News
    Quick remedial action ,
But how many incidents like this must it take for the required examination and repairs to be
carried out BEFORE the tourist season begins ( or all year round as a matter of fact ) avoiding the embarrassment and negative comments the negligence provokes.
HOPE SOMEONE HAD SOME SERIOUS QUESTIONS TO ANSWER , and relative action taken against those responsible .
Thank God no serious injuries and lessons learnt .

SMDH. Not so fast, wheel and come again, too sho, too Flam, In my opinion no consideration was given in the event small Children are in the care of an adult, and decide to bolt, as children do for the Heck of it, no side protection, not Wheel Chair accessable, again in the event Persons with Disabilities decides to visit the area, again this is an area that experiences, lots of Rain, the wood structure might only last untill the next Election, not bashing, keeping it Real. We crying out and inviting tourist to visit our lovely island, and at the same time leaving ourself open to potiential LAw suit, {S}. quick to beat our chest LaBa KA Twavie. Only in Dominica! # I`M Dominican, Are You??? Fix it!

Well done ! however this deterioration should never have been allowed to occur.
What about the rest of the trail, all the pathways and segments, the rest shelters etc…. maintenance and upkeep from all appearances has not been given priority nor the attention which this National and Regional resource is so deserving of…not to mention the liability incurred thru the many users of the trail who go out on a daily basis and come from all corners of the earth. Shame on us for not appreciating and preserving our leading natural touristic resource…moreover there’s not another one like it in the Caribbean!!! Come on Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry…where are your Waitukubuli National Trail champions???

  16. Loading condition
    December 7, 2016

Base on the construction of the structure was any load calculations done to determine the amount of weight the structure can withstand? Remember Mr. Tonge each tourist has a different weight and having a sign posted stating the weight restriction will serve two folds: First as a guide for the tourist and tour operators to be forewarned about the weight restriction and it can indemnify the government from any liabilities should the weight restriction be exceeded, since this is a government facility.
