Community of ‘Gutter’ mourns death of Peter Hodge

The community of Gutter is mourning the death of Peter Hodge, a young man described as a “very nice” person in that community who succumbed from gunshot injuries last night.

According to previous police reports, Hodge was shot on Kings Lane in Roseau recently.

He was flown to Barbados about 4 days ago, admitted to a hospital there and was due to undergo surgery.

An emotional family member, Glen Williams who spoke to Q-95 on Monday, said he visited Hodge last night and at the time he [Hodge] was unstable, with no reaction.

“I went to talk to him, I rubbed my hands on his back and told him how much I loved him,” Williams said. “I told him he was there to do a surgery and as soon as the surgery is over, we will go home.”

He encouraged Hodge to stay calm, “and at the same time he moved his foot,”

Williams said he left then went home to relax.

He explained that at about 11:45pm, he received a call from a nurse and was asked to come to the hospital, “but not alone.”

“When we arrived at the hospital we were brought in a room and the Doctor explained everything,” an emotional Williams recounted.

Hodge had been shot in the forehead.

Williams said he will remain in Barbados for the results of the autopsy before bringing Hodge’s body home.

Meantime, Davidson ‘Observer’ Victor, the president of the Dominica Calypso Association who is also from the community of Gutter, said the whole community is sad.

“He was indeed a nice young man and that is why if you come to the village right now, everybody is sad about it,” he stated. “He was a pleasant young man and was ‘irie’ with everybody.”

Victor added, “Nothing wasn’t too much for him to do. It is a very sad time for us for in the entire village of gutter.”

Reports that several people from surrounding communities were visiting Gutter Village on Monday morning in a show of sympathy and support for the residents of that community.

In recent times, there have been a number of shooting incidents on island with Acting Deputy Chief of Police, Lincoln Corbette recently expressing concern about the situation and vowing that the police will vigourously investigate  those incidents.

Examine that man’s face carefully. It’s disfigured with fiery venom coming from the bowels. The government sets the tone for the country. The misguided Ministers should be cognizant of this fact that fair elections are eon on performance not on the number of decibels you create. Ian Douglas reminds me of the adage- Empty barrels make the most noise.

Hello and good afternoon my people. First I want to offer my condolence to the victims family. Now how can a perpetrator who murdered someone can be out on bail and still have access to a firearm to murder another person. He’s lawyer is asking our courts to release this murderer on bail again. I say no bail for the following crimes,
    Murder
    Rape
    Kidnapping
Assault 1st Degree involving a Firearm,or use of a dangerous instrument (knife)
    Aggravated Sexual Abuse.

“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” Matt 2:18.
But the next verse was comforting because those who sort to kill her sons were dead and Rachel could return to her land.
Dominicans are in pain now with the many deaths of our young men in particular. But be comforted because the enemies that seek to destroy our young men will soon disappear and Dominica will be fruitful again and the blood of our young men will no longer be wanted as sacrifice.

A point of observation…The guy is shot in his head and 4 days after he’s flown off island for surgery…That’s a very sensitive area and surgery is needed almost immediately in that case …
EVANGELIST..It’s good to be positive but if you were paying attention to global news, like I call it that demon gun, need to be taken and dealt with seriously. Some of the evangelicals here in the US label alcohol as a demon in the bottle but I don’t have to take a survey, I’m supper sure that way more souls are taken out by guns than what’s going by alcohol. And so, it’s not just going to happen fly by night. The authority has to go to the root of the problem and eradicate it,get the guns off folks hands, stop the guns from flowing in by whatever means possible only then they will be making head way.I read the deputy officer claiming to vigorously investigate the incidents. Is he serious, won’t prefer to do all to stop it than for it to play out and then investigate .A stitch in time…

The say I am a critical, always criticizing: the fact is I see things very different to most people; as such most of the things I say is offensive to most.

This is one of the occasion when I must speak my mine.

I am reading where he is crowned a nice person now he is dead; nevertheless, ” a man/woman is know by the company they keep.”

So,  too a person can be judged by how they present and carry themselves; here I see a man in a picture displaying a gang sign;  look at his fingers, and his gold on his neck that speaks volumes.

He may not be a bad person, nevertheless, he presented himself as a gang-banger as we say in Los Angeles.

The stay in Dominica and watch American Television, and adapt every crap they see, that is why there are so many crimes in our country; there is crime in America; however, life is totally different to what they see on Television!

Zip your ….. you can’t tell ppl what to say “type”. The truth is when you want to play gangster that’s part of the gangster life. If you a nice boy be a nice duh come and act hard acting part .

I do not celebrate death but I’m not going to pretend that the life you choose has no consequences.

Would we be allowed to ask how this young man made his money? He can not have been living of nothing, after all. Who pay for his hospital in Bam an for the transport of his body back t Dominica. is it the government? Is it rude to ask this.

Francisco, you are most definitely entitled to your opinion. There are people covered with tattoos and they are some of the nicest persons. There are others nicely attired in expensive suits and ties and they are the biggest thieves and scoundrels. Most people from his community who knew him well said that he was a good and decent person. Why do you want to pass derogatory comments to smear the man’s character when you don’t know him? The relatives, friends, acquaintances are in deep, deep mourning and here you come rubbing salt in their wounds. There is a time and place for everything and in my sincerest opinion your comments are out of time and place. Stop kicking people when they are down. Use those feet to better humanity.

“He may not be a bad person, nevertheless, he presented himself as a gang-banger as we say in Los Angeles.”(Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque).

lbo; did you read that in the quote?

Let it be understood, that people judge you by the way you carry and present yourself.

Believe it or not the picture portrays him as a gangster, or one involved in organized crime!

He characterized himself as gangster, so don’t blame me.

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Again, I will say our people adapt what they see on American Television, and try to live it out, fact is whereas they see thees things on Television, that is not real life in America, okay!

We adapt everything: Even Roosevelt and his wife brought Thanks Giving into our country; celebrating American Thanks Giving which is not traditional to Dominica.

Last Christmas I saw a commercial where people dressed up like Eskimos in winter clothing  talking about their traditionally colder nights in Dominica…

      • Ibo France
        March 21, 2019

Francisco, a young man’s life has been cut short due to senseless violence and you laughing? To quote you, “He characterized himself as gangster, so don’t blame me. Hahahahaha………….” What is this world coming to? Some people laughing at the heinous and untimely demise of an innocent fellow human being. Heart wrenching!

    • March 18, 2019

Telemaque, this time I agree with you! The same thing came to my mind as I looked at the photograph–but I may be wrong.

I am not saying that the people are wrong to claim that this young fellow was a nice man in his community, but what about the company that he kept?

It must be that the community accepted his companionship and their practices, so it did not matter to them, or they never observed the flaw among his companions.

I have that same concern about my nephew, who was gunned in broad daylight on his way to or from home in July 2017. I still don’t know how that came to pass, but I believe that my nephew belonged to the group who murdered him–I may be wrong, but the evidence is too well exposed

      • A. George
        March 19, 2019

In your comment you say I may be wrong how many times… if that is so well best you did not comment. Folks are saying the shooter shot the wrong guy .. the whole community is saying he was a good guy .. is not just mother, is not just father … let them people grieve … wait for the full story to come out and then come and comment … stop making wild and unfounded accusations … I am not saying anything, I don’t know the guy.

      • Ibo France
        March 19, 2019

George, that’s exactly my point. Can the entire community be wrong? He might have made that posture in the photo as jest. People are in serious emotional agony at present. Why pass such insensitive remarks at this time of mourning. Sometimes a person may be right but the inconsiderate manner and the time in which he speaks this truth is just as if he was wrong. I’m not conceding that you are right Francisco and Elizabeth but take these two quotes into consideration.
Ouote#1: A truth that’s told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent.
Ouote#2: All truth is good, but not all truth is good to say.

My sympathy to the family. Thats why we need to bring back the rope and hang those criminals high brcause wome criminal lawyer more wicked than satan will come to defend that murderous dog and they walk say free Hong those bastards that’s what God said in his word. secondly I love the Trinidad and Tobago ag. commisioner Garry Griffith the court letting those cromi ala go free so the police putting those killers down if that should happen here to much police time wasting take those criminals off . and save Dominica put them off from the streets.

Before the gun man had spent a day in the prison, there were already criminal lawyers making application for bail. They do not want to give the police time to do their work .Now supposed he was granted bail, the police would now have to arrest him for murder ,how stupid this would look. Again I’m appealing to those hungry lawyers , please give the police ample time to do their job

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        March 19, 2019

Dear Mr. Policeman BEB how come you did not do your work while stationed in Wesley, and do some detective work, and hunt down the killer, or killers who murdered my nephew by slitting his throat.

And don’t forget the second murder where an associate of my nephew was also found days later dead murdered with his throat slit too!

Now, when I said you did not do your work; you know I am kidding with you; but the reality is the police hierarchy should have brought in the FBI, and if needs be bring in London New Scotland Yard to deal with such matters which the Dominica police cannot resolve.

BEB there are too many unsolved murders in Wesley, the police had a long time to do their work!

        Where are they?

Boy I think I going to nominate you for Chief, and Commissioner you know, (cause by the time de government change dem chief an commissioner gat fu go eh!).

Very sad and my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. But people it’s another young man we are forced to bury and that is concerning because while everything is failing here, our funeral homes and prison seems to be the only institution experience growth. Our young men are dying on our roads sometimes in groups of five as if to suggest their is war against our black brothers. Our men cannot get work to maintain their families and as a result result, they losing their girlfriends and wives to those Ministers of women affairs that are able to show the big dollars. We must open our eyes because if somebody did not save the life of baby Moses, pharoah would have succeeded

        March 19, 2019

Frank, in the scheme of things, if the police approach me at the behest of someone i dont agree with, i will comply with them to a degree, but i will give them nothing willingly, especially if it is my “Ace Card”. No i will hold that for the court trial if the person that send them really want to take me to court. I wouldnt just give them my evidence. especially if i know they may only want to destroy it and is my only copy? they know i have it? Yes i moomoo. Now let them take me to court, for me to bring everything out. Police is not judge jury or executioner. as a defendant, I have nothing saying to the police apart from what i am allowed to say by law. Everything else is to my own detriment. Especially if my lawyer not present.

  15. Young observer
    March 18, 2019

Ok folks let’s look at this. Our young people are being gunned down and the police with their limitd resources are left to solve these incidents. I’m going to say what I think and let the chips fall where they may. We see the children of government ministers and their close supporters get scholarships to study overseas and become something in society. While the same government ministers give the less fortunate youngsters money to buy scooters, nike shoes, lacoste ,guns and drugs etc. Keeping them under their spell , and not providing jobs for them. These shootings are not going to stop because they are being sponsored by the government. People open your eyes. Just make a count of how many ministers children studied overseas or are studying overseas.

      March 19, 2019

i totally agree with you. But lets look at it, the police are hardly successful with that operation because the people that got searched always call or message their friends to inform them of the location of the police and the operations. So therefore, it does be real difficult for the police to get results.

Most profound condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of the deceased, Peter Hodge. Dominica is currently overwhelmed with sorry and misery. There is just too much decadence and stress. Homicides, road fatalities, joblessness, mushrooming vagrancy, political tribalism, starvation wages, hopelessness have become an inextricable part of the daily grind of life. This misery has reached boiling point. The country needs a relief to breathe a breath of fresh air. Putting back Skerrit and his playmates in power for a next five year term is tantamount to committing suicide. OUT WITH THEM!
