Confirmed reports reaching DNO indicate that six inmates at the Dominica State Prison have contracted Chicken Pox.

“I can confirm to you that six inmates do have Chicken Pox and this has affected the remands situation,” an official with knowledge of the matter stated.

The official who did not want to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the press described the situation as “grave” which needS “urgent attention.”

“They need to deal with it urgently and speedily because it is spreading and does have serious implications for other inmates,” the source stated.

Prison officials have confirmed that a number of inmates do have Chicken Pox but refuse to give more details on the matter.

Chicken Pox is an itchy rash of spots that look like blisters, which can appear all over the body. Chicken Pox is very contagious and and it often starts with a fever, headache, sore throat, or stomach ache.

These symptoms may last for a few days, with fever in the 101°-102°F (38.3°-38.8°C) range, according to medical experts.

in an area where hygienic standards are poor u expect to get these illnesses. like dirty linen, stool and urine on the floor, untidy bathroom/washroom just name it. tell me what else can’t the acquire up in that prison. general screening should be enforced. check urine, stool, blood everything, in order to protect the public when they are freed and the ppl surrounding them that they don’t pass on there illness. things like that should be done long time. isolation technique hello. or put all those with the chicken pox in the same room, HOSE done the area, sunlight plz, clean everything
    . where are the DOCTORS.

They should be quarantined. Visitors should be prohibited at this time. If they are allowed, those who visit them should wear masks and gloves and then throw them away.
When I resided in DA I had a touch of chicken pox between 2 or 4 with only two on my forehead. The rest were on one of my arms. Prior to knowing about it I felt an itch on my arm and scratched it.
As soon as it was diagnosed by a doctor whom I had spoken to, I went home and told my mother. She gave me a dose of Milk of Magnesia. No more came out. I remained indoors for about two to three weeks.
Milk of Magnesia is a cooling and cleansing of the blood and bowels. I would recommend it. It probably will be effective or more so if taken in the early stages of chicken pox.
Give the prisoners a cleansing of the body. When were they ever given a body cleansing? They probably have too much toxins in the blood especially those who ingest illegal drugs which are rampant in the country.
Normally, Vitamin C – Citrus, D and E should be given to them. Vitamin D for sunlight. The authorities should read about Vitamins and which ones may be suitable for this type of disease and after they get better. If they are not able to take them in liquid or pill form, let the doctor give them this type of injection.

 I should not laugh but I had to laugh at your comment. They should all get sick and you know what else. This would help eradicate crimes/murders in DA. Send those murderers, thieves and those who create lack of peace there. They should not be walking the DA streets in freedom. Let them suffer for what they did to innocent people. It may be a scourge for that same reason – God’s punishment on them. No bail for them. Let them feel the heat of their evil actions.

as a adult chicken pox can be deadly if someone has an already exciting illness like asthma chicken pox can lead to death. This should not be taken lightly especailly some prosioners may not get medical attention because they are prisoners

Ag SAuperintendnet of the Prisons need to contact family of inmates who has the chicken pox to purchase CALAMINE Lotion, or the Hospital can provide it which is the lotion for chickenpox. I had it as a teenager and this lotion helped tremendously. Inmates with chickenpox need to be isolated asap cuz it is contagious.

If there are people in prison who have chickenpox and have murdered some one, they should suffer with chickenpox. But if they are not hardened
criminals, they should immediately get medical help.

If they are close with each other, it will definitely spread. Pregnant women keep away. When it is healed, the scars stays for a few months depending on the severity of they itching. This is not a joke. They have to soak in oatmeal, and use this pink medication for the itching. If this does not get immediate attention, it will travel from village to village and even in travelling.
I don’t remember the pink medication right now, because my two children and husband had it several years ago and it is no joke to see you child or children suffer with fever and itchiness, and cannot help them.

Google chickenpox, the side effects, and how it is treated. Stay safe and healthy Dominica.

From the knowledge that i get. the pox is contagious when it is drying after nine days not when in it full bloom/ that is the stage that it is dangerous, but then that is just part of the phase we have to go through so people take it easy. All you behaving like is the end of the world. chicken pox is not a killer disease.

Chicken pox can be more severe in adults.
Most people get chicken pox when they are young, but the symptoms can be more severe among people who catch the infection in an older age. They include loss of appetite, fever, headache, tiredness and rashes, all of which can be more taxing on the health of elderly adults.

Chicken pox can develop into shingles,

Shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the same virus responsible for chicken pox: the varicella zoster virus. Even if you had chicken pox in the past, you can still contract shingles. That’s because the chicken-pox virus remains in the body, lying dormant in the roots of nerves, and can reactivate many years later. It’s not clear why the virus reawakens — in some people it never does — but researchers believe that the virus is triggered as the immune system weakens with age or in conditions of stress.

    It is serious

Wow, ls it that bad that a concerned employee has to hide his identity to report this to the press while authorities are mum about it? This is not just a lack of insight but simple negligence, and irresponsibility on the part of the Prison’s authority. Sadly, this could affect the general public in a short time, and health authorities will be left with more problems on their hands. Thanks to the official that reported this but ss of this time we have not heard what steps authorities are taking to halt the outbreak. Are visitors allow continued visits or are they closing the prison untill the problem is solved, or how are they protecting non-infected inmates? The public has a right to know (be protected). We can only hope that authorities will take drastic steps now and in the future to protect inmates and the public from other types of outbreaks which are usually ignored in prisons, and eventually explode into the general public. Shame that this situation is according to the official “grave, and need urgent attention.”

Well this is a much bigger problem than we think that can spread like wild fire. What about prisoners and people on remand who have to be transported to court. They will expose police officers, magistrates, judges, lawyers, DPP and everyone that has contact with them. Bear in mind someone who has been exposed is contagious 24 hour before they break out into a rash, so it is not only people with the rash that are contagious. The peak time to break out in the rash is 10-21 days after exposure, and chicken pox can be spread by contact as well as through the airborne mode, meaning u do not have to touch the person, as long as you are in close proximity to them. Getting Chicken pox as an adult is much more serious than getting it as a child, and can have serious complications. The whole prison population would need to be quarantined, and let time pass to clear this up. The people who already have it should be isolated. If this is not taken care of,we may find new cases coming up every few days. We need some real medical management to help contain this. Speaking from experience, chicken Pox as an adult is not a good experience and I did not have complications.

Yes! The concerned employee could lose his/her job for squealing on them. It will project the authorities as being incompetent which will be an embarrassment for them. No exception in the US, Canada or Europe and no doubt elsewhere.

I hope that this situation is adressed promptly and that all inmates are given due attention. There needs to be a serious investigation into abuse of prisoners at the State prison. We seem to forget that they are still human beings and some of them are still on remand that means that they have not been accused of a crime yet. I know for a fact that an inmate on remand was made to sleep with his hands cuffed behind his back, not because he was being mean but because the officer in charge of returning him to his cell claimed that he could not find the keys to unlock the cuffs. Then the keys reappeared the next morning.

    • Justice and Truth
      May 15, 2013

Very funny. Only in DA you say? The officer hid the keys :?:
I do not endorse abuse. Nevertheless, while in prison they should be taught human love and respect, also for the lives of others so that if and when they are released they would exercise same to others thus making DA a better and safer place. Some of them may not have received this type of training at home. They are the cause of unsafe woes of Dominicans.

My! My! My! My little body dealt with that infection when I was a teeny bopper. There are now vaccines for chicken pox provided you do not already have the disease. You must be careful and not take aspirins when you have that because it can lead to a more serious disease. Thst thing can spread to the general population in no time. They must tackle it now. It can lead to fatalities. Is the staff vaccinated?
