BREAKING NEWS: Evelina Baptiste is Dominica’s new DPP

Evelina Baptiste
Evelina Baptiste

Information reaching Dominica News Online indicates that Chief Magistrate, Evelina Baptiste, is going to be Dominica’s new Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

A source with inside information on the matter said Baptiste, who was interviewed previously for the post but was “not considered,” has been approached for the job and has accepted.

“I can confirm to you that Ms Baptiste has been approached again for the post and has accepted and will be the new DPP,” the source told DNO.

When DNO contacted Attorney General, Levi Peter, on the matter he said, “I cannot confirm, as far as I am aware no final decision has been taken…if you heard that well..the Chief Magistrate was an applicant.”

Peter said he cannot deny the information and also cannot make any comments. “The best I could say is I can’t say yes or no but it’s something you have to watch closely and it’s Friday afternoon,” he said. “I imagine that I will be able to give you something on that soonest but as far as I am aware a decision has not yet been taken.”

Peter announced earlier this week that Guyanese Kurt de Freitas, the man who was to take up the job, withdrew his acceptance based on what was described as ‘negative comments’ made about him in the media.

Just soften your stance on marijuana. It totally wasted the previous DPP’s career and time. Don’t go down that road that only leads to infamy.

Accept my sympathy on the passing of a member of your family Mister Jones Thomas of Newtown ; a man who played lapo cabwit for several decades. So while we mourn his loss we are also celebrating your ascension to a new and very important post of DPP.

    EVO FOR PRESIDENT
So while they were looking frantically for a women preso we have a well trained and experienced and truly distinguished and highly respectable and independently minded Miss Baptiste…and the A-G embrassed himself and our country>>>>>>>>well done Miss Baptiste for accepting this speaks about your value system; you are a woman of great character and looked at the need of the country first. Congrats!!!!

SHE TURNED down so many job offers overseas just to serve her beloved country.

She was asked to be DPP and quickly accepted and I just don’t know what went wrong with the process, after which some (….) asked her to apply for the job and they couldn’t get their way with her at the job interview, She told them that the position of the DPP is a creature of the Constitution and shall remain to be independent very divorced from the interference of the executive. The importance of the unimpeachable value enshrined in the Separation of Powers Doctrine was so eloquently espoused by this learned intellectual Evalina Baptiste ; yet they wanted someone who they could control. I hope we all learn our lessons and do what is right. She is a brilliant jurist and may accept judge-ship one day!

She might well be our First Woman President !!!!

I am so very proud of you and the way you carry yourself, no arrogance yet solid and definitely not a political puppet at all. It is people like you who needs to be in such high and important positions. Miss Baptiste is the preferred Choice; a popular choice all across political lines; a unifying choice The Best Choice! A woman of high Calibre an intellectual giant!

    WEll DONE MISS BAPTISTE

I cannot congratulate Miss Baptiste, as far as I am concerned she should not have accepted the job. Having been rejected the first time and to accept it now could signal a weakness which could be exploited later.

    • Creative
      September 29, 2013

If she is accepting she may just be putting her country first, have you thought about that? Why should that signal weakness? To me that is strength, very strong character and determination. She must be seeing the need for her knowledge, experience and expertise in a judicial system that is in SHAMBLES.

I have known Miss Baptiste all my life. She came from a long line of very brainy and intelligent family. The Baptiste & Clarendon are part of the same community of Newtown and they are part of the very same family. They have contributed tremendously to the human resource capital in Dominica and beyond. The outgoing Chief magistrate and incoming DPP is the holder of a degree in Diagnostic radiography from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Campus; she is also the holder of a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of West Indies, St Augustine Campus. After this she went on to top her class with a rare distinction Master’s Law degree in Marine Law in Malta. Miss Baptiste served on the Newtown Development Committee as Secretary for many years. She was also the Chief Registrar of the OECS, Registrar of Dominica, acted DPP on many occasions showing sound knowledge and dedication & efficient application of the law. Her sojourn as Chief Magistrate was remarkable ! Miss Baptiste has a retentive memory, thinks on her feet, and has a tremendous work ethic. It is remarkable that her judgments have stood the test of time and can be said to represent her sheer brilliance of many aspects of the law. Her rulings have never been successfully challenged in the court of appeal. She has been known to be independently minded; of great respect and competence. Congratulations MIss Baptiste and best wishes…..Greatness can come out of the ghetto of Newtown.

    September 27, 2013

    Ms. Baptiste,

I know you personally and know that you possess impeccable character and serve with the highest level of professionalism. I admire your courage, tenacity and humility. Just feel you were disrespected and humiliated when they went for the senior citizen from Guyana for the post as the felt some how that you did not appear to be what they had in mind for the post.

I encourage you to do the honorable thing. Decline the post now in protest for the unfair favoring that they used to sideline you. You are a woman of class and great respect, if you withdraw we all will stand by you and double our respect for you.

Don’t hang with folks who are merely prepared to tolerate you, venture where you are celebrated.

The only reason that they would not turn around and ask Mr. Williams to continue serving as president after the two nominee withdrawals is simple because he will not accept. Let the same be said about you madam, if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything (my mamma taught me that )lol

When she becomes DPP, maybe she should open the case of Sarah Lyn Augustine who murdered her two children, was out on bail and who the former DPP allowed to sneak out of Dominica without Dominicans being aware of it.
If Sarah returns to Dominica, she should face the Court. She has not yet paid her dues to Dominica and D/cans for the murder of her two children. Her case should be pending and not closed.

Finally !! It took sensible people to force those with degrees to make a pre-school decision. Congratulations madam, you will do our country proud.
Let us as a country put our qualified, and capable citizens first instead of by passing or making excuses to prevent them from moving up. When they succeed the whole country succeeds. This was long over due, we must re-install some integrity in this land. Madam, all God bleesings upon you, We need your guidance!!

    Hey!!!

That’s what we’re talking about! We love it. She’s experienced, ready and able with the credentials to show. If the same can be done with the presidency we all shall be happy. Mr. Charles Savarin is the wrong man for President

The non-scientific survey conducted by NDO clearly discarded the nominee for president. So we are pleading with you Sir, to follow the will of the people, and save yourself and your DSP some badly needed face. He’s considered worst than your first nominee and it’s likely to divide the nation more than ever. Please do the right thing.

    Sincerely,

Congratulations to you Miss Baptiste. You are a woman of integrity, honesty and we know you have and will continue to uphold the law. We ask God strength and courage for you to continue serving Dominica and its people without fear or favor, within a justice system that needs much reform and restructuring. My prayers are with you and I feel so proud that you may( I say may, because Levi Peters has not confirmed as yet) be in this important position to bring some direction and justice to this failing court system that we are currently experiencing. I ask God that you will be allowed to do your job to the best of your ability, without interference from anyone who wants to manipulate the system. Praise God, He is not asleep, and He is in control.
