The “littlest” role model

He may be small in stature but his accomplishment as a positive role model goes far beyond his size.

On Friday, eight-year-old St. Mary’s Primary School (SMP) student, Cameron Phillip, was among five male recognized by the Caribbean Male Action Network (CARIMAN) for being a positive role model in society.

President of CARIMAN Dominica Chapter, Thomas Holmes describes Phillip as a well-educated student.

“He is perceived as a positive role model not only to the men here, but he is a positive role model to his peers at school and other children who strives to succeed and achieve,” Holmes said. “So when we give this award, it is not just for the students at SMP but we are talking about all the students who look up to him as a perfect example.”

He said Phillip was chosen to be recognized because he has contributed to nation building, despite his size.

“Cameron Phillip as small as he is he is contributing to nation building by making his school a good respectable school, being involved in church, in the community, in sports, in music,” Holmes stated. “That is why we chose him and then the others. It is because of their achievement and their successes and being a role model to others.”

Phillip is a member of the St. Alphonsus Scout troupe, and an active 4-H Club member. He is also a former member of the Pottersville youth sports academy and presently enrolled in the Newtown Juvenile Football Academy among others.

He is a music enthusiast and plays the recorder, guitar and drum.

“This young man is an example to other young men and I am not sure if he is as tall as the table, but his ideas and what he has are much taller than the building,” Holmes said.

The other four men recognized are Heskeith Charles, Emanuel Grell, Joffre Fuastin and Phillip Carlisle.

Meantime, Cedric Phillip, father of the young awardee, said his son has made him proud.

“I’m very pleased, I’m very happy that as a young man he is involved in all these things,” he told DNO. “It made us all feel proud.”

He stated that his son’s accomplishment “is the beginning, not the end.”

The elder Phillip said his son is taking the accomplishment in stride.

“He took it in stride as he takes everything,” he stated. “He seems to be a young person who appreciates things. Things he received years ago, he still has them.”

The ceremony was held in observance of International Men’s Day 2014 under the theme: Working Together for our Men and Boys.

CONGRATS young man! Keep up the good work. The stardard has been set. I pray that God will cover you and that you remain humble before him in your service to others as He continues to exalt you. The greater He makes you, the greater your effort should be in maintaining humility. And remember, Service above Self, Clean hands and a Pure heart. Love Jesus.

The best thing, we, adult should do, is to not put him under any pressure. Now that we know who he is and who he is going to become, we need to just leave him and his mind production alone. I am not saying that he doesn’t need some mature guidance at that age–but let us believe in his Primary guidance who is God, Himself–do not forget that Jesus loves children; He has a plan for Cameron Phillip. Most of the time our intervention always spoil things and so, let us let go, and let God’s plan in that young man’s Life–just as He has started it

This article warms my heart and brings a smile to my face. Such a young age and you have done so much. Wow!
Congratulations, young man who appear to be already grown up, :) being an example to also older ones. You are endowed with not only one talent but a few. Are you aware that God has endowed you with them? He knows you and has chosen you for the mission which you are performing. He has noted your enthusiasm and determination and has multiplied your gifts. By this, you will note that one is never too young for God to use fruitfully. His eyes are on all of us, adults and youths.
One day on my way to work, I was reciting my Holy Rosary. As I got closer to my destination, the words cross my mind, hopefully through inspiration: “If you give God an inch, He will take a foot.”
This amazed me. I thought, “Lord, I hope this came from you.” :) Therefore, you gave God an inch, your willingness and He has taken a foot with more to come.
Keep it up young fellow. If at your age you excel to this height. I visualize you will reach higher heights.
As I always say, parents play a great part in their children’s nurturing and also tutoring. While all siblings may not excel in the same manner, nevertheless, you have done well for eight years of age.
I also extend congratulations to your parents who have been instrumental in your achievement. They have reasons to be proud, and of you, their son.
There is no doubt your teachers have also been encouraging and supportive. Congratulations to them as well.
I recall a saying I heard on a TV religious program: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, you have never been a mosquito.”
You know what a mosquito is capable of doing; it stings you. You know what your reaction will be to this sting. :)
Young one, you are already a model. I think your actions depict that you are older than your age. :) In time, as you get older, you will be a greater model. May the other young ones emulate you.
God bless you, protect you and assist you accordingly.

Phillip is a promising young man. His mind has really been made up and only the sky seems to be the limit for him. We as parents must continue to play that major role in the lives of our children. The home is the first school.
