PM dispels sickness speculations

PM Skerrit (far left) tours expansion work at Ross University earlier this month

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has dismissed allegations that he is sick and has sought medical attention saying that he has been concentrating on the implementation of projects lately.

He described the allegations as malicious rumors and an “evil practice.”

“I have been hearing rumors, several people have been sending me text messages and literally coming to look for me because they heard that I have been hospitalized,” he said. “This is really a malicious rumor.”

Recently speculations have been rife on social media and other channels that the Prime Minister is experiencing poor health and has been sick. Many based their claims on the lack of public appearances since the general election held in December 2014.

But Skerrit told state-owned DBS Radio that all these are far from the truth.

“It is unfortunate that there are elements in our country who would engage themselves in such evil practice,” he stated. “Because why would you want to call on somebody illness, if the person is not sick? And even if the person is sick, why would you want to celebrate it?”

He confirmed that he has not been to any hospital or has been hospitalized.

“I can say to you that I have not been to any hospital, I have not been hospitalized. I am not ill, I am not sick. I am very, very well,” Skerrit insisted.

He noted that if he, as Prime Minister, were hospitalized there would be a formal statement coming from cabinet and the Office of the Prime Minister.

Skerrit said that he is praying for those who are saying that he has been sick.

“I will say that when you ask for something on somebody, you will very well get it before the person gets it,” he stated. “I can say to you that those who are calling for my illness will fall ill before me and those who call for my death will die before me.”

Skerrit said that instead of being ill, he as been focusing on the mandate “that the people of Dominica has given to me.”

“I have taken this mandate very seriously and I wouldn’t want to disappoint the people in any way,” he stated. “So I have been focusing a lot on completing projects, moving where there are stumbling blocks ….so I have been focusing heavily on project implementation.”

some of us are really using our ignorance as a badge of honour. Can one really hide sickness or even death. No one is celebrating the pm’s illness. who could. If the pm really cares about himself he would look at things from a different angle and realize that one appointment we all must keep is death and really it is no respecter of persons. I think that he should have been matured enough to say that i am not well but i am taking care of myself. Thinking of who will inherit the villas? Remember the good book says what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lose his soul.

last July, the PM spoke in parliament suggesting that the real reason for Mr. Linton’s visit to the US was to undergo “Anger Management Therapy/Treatment”. Mr. Linton forcefully and vehemently denied what the PM said. There was and still is no evidence to prove the PM right. The PM came in for a never-ending tongue lashing on a particular radio station and throughout the subsequent election campaign. Today the “shoe’ is on the other foot and the PM again is being taken to task for commenting on rumours that he is ill, nearing death etc. The PM said that he is well and healthy. Rather than condemning the present rumour about the PM’s state of health, Mr. Linton is reminding the public of the PM’s statement last July, seemingly as a form of justification, payment for starting a falsehood about him back then. Where the statement of the PM was wrong last year, what makes the present rumour about his health right? Because he made a false statement last year? A wrong is a wrong…

No need to contort yourself brother:

      – Mr. Skerrit’s allegation was made under parliamentary privilege in the House, offering mr. Linton no defence except public protestation. That was a cowardly move by mr. Skerrit in any man’s book.
      – mr. Linton has never said that mr. Skerrit is ill but has publicly stated that if mr. Skerrit says that he is not ill, he is not ill.

Mr. Linton reiteration of mr. Skerrit’s noxious claim in the House last July is merely a statement of fact and we are entitled to make our own appropriate judgement based on that.

Hello and good afternoon my people. I agree with you and if our PM is sick we all should wish him well and if his not sick we must wish him well again. We all are human and are prone to sickness regardless of political Affliation .

Hey skerro I am elated that you are well and in good health. At least try and exhibit some tact and diplomacy when addressing the nation. And yes the people has a right to inquire about your health. We pay you to do a job and if you need sick leave it is ok you are neither immortal nor a god. When speaking a leader should know what to say and how to say it. Why would you think plp want you ill? You are emitting arrogance and the same evil fire of arrogance will one day consume you.

What an evil thing to say! Don’t forget that one day we will ALL be consumed by the inevitable! Clearly, the people of our Nation gave the PM and his Party a mandate to govern. Why are some people appearing to rejoice over his alleged illness? This is horrendous!!! As a Nation we should ask God to give our PM the strength to carry out the running of our beautiful Island. Clearly he is the people’s choice whether some people like it or not!! Some of us have short memories. God bless our PM!!

I doubt that the local citizenry is wishing illness upon the prime minister. However, there is no smoke without fire. As the elected leader of the country, his health will always be a topic of concern for local citizens.

We lost two prime ministers to poor health while they were in office. The prime minister is aware of that and how it could adversely affect the morale of the country. Let’s hope that the rumors are false and he continues to maintain great health throughout his term in office, despite political disagreements on how the country is being run.

DNO, the job of the evangelist is to preach and please let me preach here. I want to take my text from Isaiah 38:1-2 “In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord,

I first heard the former real Evangelist preach from that passage and he had me trembling boy. Let’s all take this advise from the great prophet.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against “spiritual hosts of wickedness” in the heavenly places Ephesians 6: 12

The term :”evil” fall in the same category of “malice”, “hostility”, “ill will”, wickedness, and even “mischievous”–there are others, but I will leave it at that.

Therefore, is the Prime Minister wrong to say that the mentality, as mentioned above. has stood against him? Is he wrong to say that people are simply being “mischievous” –evil–to speak against his health without a clue that it is true?

People of Dominica please take heed of the Scripture above; be careful that your mind is not controlled by the “spiritual hosts of wickedness and darkness”. Know that words are very powerful; and to speak against a person’s health is downright evil–you all need to stop God’s wrath against your futile attitude and conduct, before it’s…

        January 28, 2015

Tony I do not wish to get involved here because somebody will have plenty to say to me, that somebody might E-mail me and fight with me, nevertheless, I wish to inform you that man did not kill Jesus: Jesus Christ came into this World, he was God in human flesh when he walked the earth. He came for that specific purpose, hence he laid down his life willing for the sins of all humans.

The Romans believed they killed him,: now if you study the Bible you will learn that just before he gave up his Sprit, he said to his father Jehovah “it is finished.” We who are believers in Jesus knows he raised himself from the dead, and walked out of the burial place, and again walked among men eat with them prior to ascending into heaven. I am not a preacher, nevertheless if truly want to I advise you to buy a King James version of the Bible and study his word! As it is written: ” ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”

    • Francisco Telemaque
      January 28, 2015

I doh calling no name again, I just writing me ting:

I read in the Book of Ephesians, 6:12 out of the King James Version of the Bible “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against, spiritual wickedness in high place.

The Bible warned that nothing shall be added, nor taken away from the word of God. It is wrong when people quote scripture and add their personal words to what thus saith the Lord. It has to be written in the Bible, the scripture above is written the same in the Roman Catholic Bible as it is in the King James version.

Roosevelt, I do not like the way you run the country but I do not wish you ill either. No caring person would do that. But please, be more visible to the people you call your children, tell us where you are going and where you are speaking from. Don’t condemn the people for worrying about that. If you loved them you would say”thank you for caring about me” instead of condemning them. Why you must throw a stone through your own window when you speak? You need our support and for that we do not need your condescending manner and paranoia. You are not helping the country or yourself with that attitude brother.

But this prime minister have jokes. You just disappeared and all of a sudden you coming to make correction. You are accountable to the people, they put you in power to do their work you should have informed the people of what you are up to in advance and then there would not be any of these theories about you being sick going around. On another note if you are not sick then that’s great you are a young man with a family and I would not wish sickness on you. But you know that you are not doing well there is proof of it there is no shame to being sick. I hope you get better soon so you could come back to do the people’s work.

Imagine that, a leader of a country calling for illness and death on his citizen. When you are a public figure or in politics for that matter, you are required to have thick skin and don’t take everything personally. Imagine a Prime Minister calling for sickness and death of Dominicans. Maybe next time you should said “No Comments”, try it, it works.

The PM needs to communicate at a higher level, use a little more tact and diplomatic in his responses. His level of discourse seems to be beneath that of a statesman or head of government.

You hypocrites who pretend to love your country but will step so low as to speak sickness and death on Mr. Skerrit , a father of young children and a husband. This is really a shame. Don’t you all know that even if Skerrit dies you will still have to wait 5 more years to run this country? The viellecase seat will be won by labour and the deputy leader will be Prime Minister. If he dies, there will still be another. So please wait patiently for your turn. It’s just five years. Stop speaking sickness and death on people and yes, this is evil. This country is plagued by jealousy .

  28. January 27, 2015

Some of you people in Dominica simply do not have anything better to do with your time.

Why would you hope and wish misfortune on someone who has not done anything wrong to you is beyond comprehension.

It is only the evil minded who thinks that way.

When you read the comments from some of the DNO readers, it is clear that there is a groundswell of hate and ill will towards the prime minister.
Yes he is the prime minister that alot of people do not like, however if you put this to one side he is still a human being like everyone of us.

Some people are simply ignorant, and do not have no understanding of politics and current affairs.
Long after the prime minister has vacated office, they will vent their anger and life frustrations on the next prime minister and the next. Why??

Because alot of these people thinks the system owes them a favour.

Some of you people need to get off your backsides and get a life.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      January 28, 2015

Man you are talking crap! If you are convince that Dominicans should find something better to do with their time, how come you are writing in the forum also, are you not wasting your time too? Skerrit is a public figure, duly elected to run the country. He is the head of our nation, therefore the people of the country do have a legitimate right to know if he is ill or not!

WE do not have to know every intricate detail of his private life, nevertheless, if he is ill that may have an effect on how he functions in the dispensation of his duties. The decisions he makes good or bad depends on his mentality, his thinking. Diseases very often distorts the human way of thinking in a psychological way. There is nothing wrong about informing the people if he has a medical issue okay! No point of anyone fearing death, because anyone of us can die today, our position in life exempts us not from sickness, and death, I would like to wish him well, if he is ill I wish his treatment works that’s…

      • Francisco Telemaque
        January 28, 2015

If he is ill I wish his treatment works that’s all we can hope for! Now, soon we will read a series of submissions talking about pray for him.; but unless a person agrees to people praying for them, the prayer might be futile. If I am praying for something, and my friends are praying for me, unless we agree on the same thing I may not get any result.

Here is a simple example: If I say to you I am praying to find a Job, pray that I get that Job! You might pray for me to get a scavenger’s job whiles I may be praying to get a high power white color job, we would not be in unison, therefore we will cancel the prayers by going in opposite direction. Even if I pray to God for ” a job” without been specific; I may not get a job a gift from God, because I did not tell him what sort of job I wanted. So I suggest if the prime minister need prayer from the people he has to be specific about the illness he wish to heal!

The PM responded to correct the untruths and so placate the situation. He has been taken to the cleaners by those who wish he was actually, really sick fighting for his life. Can you imagine the gall some of us have. We hate Skerrit so much that we wish he was dead or worst still suffering form a paralyzing illness. If I was in PM Skerrit’s place, I would just go on doing what I have to do. What I was elected to do. Not to ignore the nay sayers (who by the way on December 8th received a brand new five year mandate to continue plying their trade of seeking to divide, the country, particularly the north vs the south) but simply take note, improve where I have to and deliver to the people. As far as I am aware, NOBODY wished you were/are ill. None-the-less, sir, it is your MODUS OPERANDI that has caused these speculations concerning your whereabouts and well-being. You seem to thrive on having people guess things since you never, or almost never let people know what’s going on. A little bit of transparency and a well designed public information policy would go a long way in eliminating such speculations. Your government is extremely poor at public relations: it Only REACTS. What harm would have been done to you and the government if a press release was issued BEFORE your departure as to where you would be and approximately the length of time. Remember, sir, that you are the Servant of the people. Remember that your previous statements were of the unsavory nature such as “it’s not your damn business”. Such approach only adds to its pervasiveness.

I am very, very, very happy that the Prime Minister is in good health. However, is he being truthful? Did we not hear this same thing during the illness and death of Chavez? One thing though, by listening to his voice he sure does not sound healthy. Mr. Skerrit won the election as they put it, on 8 Dec. 2015 and he has been out of the island for at least 30 days. Why should people not be concerned? Nobody called illness or death on the pm. Does he know something that we do not know? I do not see why he has to wish that those who are concerned die before him and say those who dug pit for him will fall in it. and quotes the bible in his nonsense. Did anyone dig anything for him. The PM needs to speak the truth at list for once and like all of us, he needs to set his house in order like we all need to do.

      Continuing from previous post

While you are calling on sickness and death for people you do not like for whatever reason, your families and friends are going through the same thing you wish on others.

If you wish others well. Chances are it will return to you tenfold. If you wish others bad, chances are the bad will revert to you tenfold. Bear that in mind people. It is better to wish your neighbour well.

All of us will get sick and die one day. Is pass we passing, so do not wish your neighbour bad.

I was worried of the rumours being spread about our Prime Minister by members of the opposition and I am happy he is okay. God will look over our Prime Minister and those who wishes him ill health? God will look over them also.

No weapon that is formed against my prime minister and his family shall not and will not prosper in Jesus name the pit allu digging for him take care allu self doh fall in it awa wi! Who would wish death on someone, who would wish someone to get sick?? My God what my country has become? Come on now dominicans where is the love for the people thatbus going to far.

“Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has dismissed allegations that he is sick and has sought medical attention saying that he has been concentrating on the implementation of projects lately.”

You are glad for the opportunity to visit construction work at Ross University! I however will remind you that Ross Medical School is not a local entity, nor does Dominica government have anything to do with it. Unless it is sold to some Dominican, we know the University is American owned, supported by students from America, and all over the world, so your nonsocial talk about implementation of project does not relate to Ross University. What you should be doing is looking for outside industrial investment into the country: I would not be surprised if you are ill, since I have noticed a change in your appearance, even your head is getting balled, even if I am against you politically, I do not want your health to deteriorate, I want you to remain alive so that you can witness the damage you…

i Hope you are telling the truth . Even in that picture you look sick. you are a young man with a family so i hope you are healthy to get old with your wife and see and play with your grand kids. But mr Skerrit i must tell you Dominica is like a single mother , without a job and no help from her children father , so therefor nothing is coming in so she has to find ways to get to feed hers kids which is very hard and she will eventually breakdown. That’s you and Dominica, Domincia is a hard country to run when we are not producing anything to export but only waiting on other countries to give us . so i can imagine you breaking down just thinking of the hows. Good luck to you mr.

Politics is something which usually affects politicians physiology. We remember Roosevelt Douglas, the night when his internal organs ruptured he portended to be happy, clowning around with a so called doctor. Pierre Charles was advised to keep on pushing, because there were others in the Caribbean sicker than he in politics!

It would not surprise me if Skerrit is ill, because his kind of politics is not normal, therefore he lives a highly stressful life, anyone with commonsense can see the man has aged beyond his years! Are we witnessing the effects of stress, or are we are noticing a symptom of something else? Anyway we are all vulnerable to some sort of illness or disease, if there is a single person alive in Dominica who claims to be free of all diseases, lift your hand. If you do I call you a liar, because even a common cold is a diseases, caused by millions of viruses. I have mine, Skerrit has his own, and everybody has their own!

But you see; your hope, or wish is just a little too late. As a matter of fact one month, and twenty-three days too late. Dominicans had the perfect opportunity to take back the country from the people you speak about. Nevertheless, they were so busy accepting the bribes which were handed to them that they became inebriated on Skerrit’s gifts of money, house without toilet, plywood, and tickets to travel from overseas, to return to Dominica to vote a corrupt, and barbarous regime back into government.

Some of those people who became drunken of as the Antiguan’s say on “freebs” wake up the next day dumbfounded not knowing what struck them in their face. Prior to the election, the slogan was “five more years.” The day after the election the cry of five more years ceased, the shackles dropped of the duped, after this five more years of suffering if Skerrit lives, he will do the same thing, bribe and fool them again: Oh, how soon Dominicans forgets!

Peace and good health be upon the Dear Leader! He has described rumors about his health as an “evil practice.” And truer words have never been spoken. Dear Leader says he has “been focusing heavily on project implementation.” But, didn’t he just exercise his good judgment and appoint a Minister for Project Implementation? Now if he has a Project Implementation Minister in his office but yet still is focusing so heavily on project Implementation to the extent that nationals have begun saying he is ill, what is the Project Implementation Minister focusing on?

While it was reassuring to hear from our PM himself that all is well with him I can’t help but be disappointed in the last part of his statement. How do you in one breath say that you are praying for the people who mean you harm and in the same breath wish them evil! That makes you no different from them! It has been a few weeks since elections and we have heard very little from or about our PM. It is understandable that people would be concerned as to his state of affairs. Having said that I would also like to say that for those who in fact found reason to “rejoice” or revel in the notion of the PM being sick that you should be ashamed of yourselves. No one chooses to be sick and sickness shows no partiality in whom it afflicts! I pray that our Heavenly Father grants us the grace to realize that we are ALL nothing without Him. In fact He knows how frail we are and He holds the number of our days. What is required of us is to fear Him and obey His commandments while we have…

Why is the PM using such loaded words as “evil”. These are the kinds of words used by people who are intent on dividing people and eventually lead to strife in certain countries.

    I expect better from him.

“Thor” is right! using such strong words as “evil” only continue to fester hatred. The PM is using too many strong hateful words when speaking about his opponents. He is the head of state and when he travels we have to know where he is – even when on vacation. He had informed the Country of his travel plans then there would not be any room for rumours. WHy all the secrecy. Is he hiding something or going somewhere , meeting persons he is not supposed to meeting ?

Well said, Skeritt.” when you ask for something or somebody , you will very well get it before the person gets it.” Skeriit may have forgotten the anger management case pertaining to Hon. Lennox Linton. For approximately fifteen months, Skeritt, Aaron in particular, the animal show, threw all types of dirty
propaganda at Hon. Linton. They even reminded Dominicans that he was a bully during his school days. Having failed to bring him down, they told Dominicans he was in the United States in a hospital seeking medical care for an anger disorder. Hon. Linton knew it was an untruth, all he said was to prove it, immediately they shut their mouths. Today, the shoe is on Skerrit’s foot, he talks all kind of foolishness about evil practice, etc. Had he informed the people of Dominica that he was leaving the country, their would have been no need for all that speculation. Granny was right when she said, “what goes around, always comes around…

This really reminds me of various number of rather scrupulous leaders in the African continent who have not been seen or heard from by the people. It is very sad that our honorable PM has to turn to this kind of language. If he had told the nation that he was busy concentrating on projects there would have been no speculation. He could simply have apologized but again it seems he thinks he is God. i pray that you will turn to God and humble yourself Mr. PM before its too late…

  55. January 27, 2015

To whom much if given, much will be required. It does not sit well that you would return the ill wishes to the senders. In fact, you should wish them well. I pray that you will be in excellent health shorlty if you are not currently so and that you will have a long and healthy life, in the name of Jesus. Turn the other cheek my brother. Bless your enemies…do good to them that curse you…be the man God wants you to be.

    • A Doubting Thomas
      January 27, 2015

Of course, he should turn the other cheek because you are making him a God and not a human being. You believe he should be insulted; vilified and abused verbally and he should remain mum. If he does not speak you say he has something to hide. If he speaks you said he should take it on the chin and turn the other cheek for a second and third and fourth attack and smile all time, all in good faith. Wouldn’t that be so sweet of him?

The Mayor of New York said today, I believe it was the Mayor; in referring to the blizzard that is crippling some part of the US – but NY was not as bad; its darned if you do and darned if you don’t. You just can’t please everyone and have to do what you think is best, Here, here!! Mr.. PM you have the support of the majority of Dominicans who have given you the mandate to run the affairs of the county and the Opposition just cannot get a grip of that. That fact is the Opposition has lost 4 straight elections and that is all there is to it.

      • January 28, 2015

@ A Doubting Thomas January 27, 2015 “You just can’t please everyone and have to do what you think is best,”

I commend you statement above, you are right on! However after 15 years exposed to the public rumble I am sure that the PM is aware of such attitude of people. He has flesh and bones like all human beings–it is not impossible for him to be sick, but I say it again: those people who crying down his health are downright “wicked” and “evil” in the minds–they have to know it.

Also Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will remain in his reign, for as long as God decide he must remain–no man can make that decision to remove him, but God alone–and long live a good man! Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit is a good man and Dominicans know it!
