Radio DJ passes on

Richards was described as 'larger than life'

Colleagues of radio DJ and host, Kevin Richards, are expressing shock as news of his untimely passing, to cancer, hit home.

Richards, 34, who goes by the name KP Styles and who died in Barbados on Friday, was described as a pioneer at local station, Vibes Radio.

“It was shocking to most of the Vibes family members,” an apparently shaken manager of the station, Diane Ettiene, told DNO.

She said during his illness Richards was always in close contact with colleagues via WhatsApp.

She stated that Richards had plans to return to work but it never happened.

“He was positive all throughout his illness and that he was going to beat it and he would be back soon. So we are all shocked today [it] has really been hard to concentrate. He will be missed,” Ettiene said.

When asked about Richard’s personality, she responded that he was “an exceptional person. He was larger than life itself, he was helpful, he was kind…”

A colleague and the host of Country Vibes on Vibes Radio, Kimran Jean Jacques, said he is saddened by Richard’s passing.

“It’s a sad time for me,” he said. “KP was always smiling…always nice, I could always talk to him.”

He remembers Richards as a helpful person who assisted him when he became a radio host.

“I message him last night and [got] no response from him and to come work this morning to find out he’s gone, it’s a sad time for me; I feel it this time,” he said.

The Radio Host had been ill for some time and was hospitalized for about a month.

While in hospital, he underwent tests to determine the source of his illness and he found out in Barbados that he had cancer.

Richards, from Cochrane, started at Vibes Radio in 2011 when it was still an online outfit with a program called Island Swag. He eventually hosted Night Shift, the Love Connection and was the the link person for Lover’s Rock with Monelle Alexis.

He leaves behind his parents Julietta and Keith Richards and his three siblings Kimberly, Kelon and Keith.

Its so embarassing you cant geta diagnosis or treatment in pmh. Rip young blood. This things just remind me of that waste of time hospital and country dominica. Doc dale dangleben came on the radio speaking about the state of the health system here and the result was astounding. Those brainless uneducated hilocritical laoirites were on kairi fm blassing the man and they damn well know that this hospital is a waste of time. And the people continue to die because of lack of professional health care. My god i dont know what wrong with some dom in a can.

Well, well well. I really share your views and its heart breaking to see how many young lives just falling to poor medical system at PMH. Just recently The young teacher, senseless death, given paracetamol for headache while she had a leaking blood vessel causing pain in her brain; then you had the other young IT professional at DSC (State College) who went to the hospital with a stomach pain and was treated for gastro with whatever, while he die from appendicitis. These are just the two immediate killings. Just go back the previous week, and the previous week and the weeks before. Somebody needs to make these people or the medical system accountable. Too much nonesense going on up there. A few months ago from the Malaysian website they were talking about the great medical system in Dominica. Dominicans blood will continue to stain those responsible and one day somebody WILL pay. Meanwhile sick ministers and their families continue to be air-lifted to nearby hospital

It’s truly heartbreaking. I think the most important word in your post is “accountable”. On one is holding PMH and the government accountable for what has been going on for way too long. When are we going to demand better?! This can’t continue much longer.

It have those local foods ner? Agriculture dead so long that’s why the little ground provision that’s left we can’t even afford to purchase them. Government not encouraging anybody, far less farmers to return to their farm. And for those making the effort to go back to our farms have no roads. Imagine Salisbury farmers one of the hardest working farmers, who remained in the grind when so many farmers were leaving to go into security guard work, taxi, construction and other areas because the government failed them, Salisbury remained resolute and see what the government has been doing to them. This government not interested in the country, its development and the welfare of its people. Its all about them and their pockets. Just too sad, we will continue to languish and die of cancer because agriculture dead, we cannot afford the little local food thats left, and cannot afford good medical treatment overseas when our own medical system sucks. God have mercy on us.
