PM says teachers have made phenomenal strides under DLP administration

Skerrit was speaking during a special year-in-review interview

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said over the years teachers in Dominica have made phenomenal strides under the Labour Party Administration.

Skerrit stated during a recent radio interview, “If you look back from when I became the Minister for Education to now and where the teachers were and where they are now, teachers in Dominica have made phenomenal strides under this administration,” he said

The Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) has voiced concern as it relates to the lack of appointment for teachers. In this regard, Skerrit revealed that his government intends to create additional positions for teachers, “and so we have asked the Ministry of Education to look at how many teachers we have who were not appointed and to advise us on how many positions we need to create to appoint those teachers. So, we are committed to this.”

He mentioned further that the issue of salary is a matter for bargaining arrangements and negotiations, “but the fact is no matter how much money, in my view, you give a teacher you will never adequately compensate that teacher.”

The prime minister, who was a teacher before entering politics, said there are 2 percent of teachers he believes should not be in teaching anymore but the vast majority of them are doing an exceptional job.

Great strides, there are now jet aircraft’s, 737 and 757 Boeing and airbus 200 landing at the international airport in Dominica on a regular daily basis coming from all over the world. There is also a 5 star hotel at Portsmouth and Margot with thousands of international visitors every week. That is truly amazing! Give the man a chance and re-elect him ASAP. This is madness, real madness in Domininca. The bunch of 18 immature, failed ministers, all they do in Dominica is await month end to receive or hard earned tax money., while the poor people who depend o them to do good, continue to suffer poverty under this failed immature PM Skerrit and his bunch of holes, clueless 18 waste of time blind ministers.

Whenever this PM speaks, please think opposite. So wen he mentioned teachers made strides, he meant teachers never moved, teachers were in reverse gear…… Teacher under the Labour Party went from bad to worst..
Remember Ross University, Ross is gonna open sooon, Den Bam, Ross gone. The pm clearly thinks that Dominicans see fools

Dominica boast about being the “first climate resilience country in the world ” by the United Nations. Can we be the first TEACHERS RESILIENT country in the world and be the international model by showcasing our idea at the United Nations. We can promote a World Conference on Teachers recognition and theachers plight.
Dominica can do it . We can play the leading role internationally …..again.

This is not an issue that should be examined in a bi-partisan political arena. Traditionally the teaching profession has been marginalized in every country. It is the last respected and appreciated. It should be highly appreciated and respected as the professions of priests, lawyers, doctors, government and central civil service ( those working at ministry)
Their condition of work should be at the highest level. Salary, benefits and bonus should be at the same level as top civil service. The PM started as a teacher so I am sure he is cognitive of the poor treatment meted to our teachers.
Not just mouthing a sentiment or point fingers. Just saying this state of affairs is unacceptable. Teachers first now. But for teachers we would all be dumb and uncivilized. Civilization would be still in primitive stage. All the development we enjoy today would not exist. Who mentor, motivate and led kids who could hardly talk to great education heights and highest success. Go figure.

Strides…as in the meager salary teachers receive!!!
Strides…as in UWI scholarships offered only to principals and not teachers!!!
Strides…as in teachers buying teaching materials from the meager salary teachers receive!!!
Strides…as in being undervalued in a profession which brings about all others!!!
Strides …as in hearing teachers are waiting forever to be appointed with a teaching degree!!!
Strides…as in the police officers and nursed salary increasing but the teachers own remain the same!!!

Susie, Amen, well said. This Pm has a mind of on ignoramous and is a dreamer and wild in his thinking which is having him neither here nor there. This is a failed PM and a failed incompetent Labour government. Skerrit is not sufficiently mature enough to be head of a country, head of a political party and head of a broken cabinet. Skerrit is a failure in politics and good governance and he feels that the way it works is apply the thoughts and minds of a 12 year old school child not used how to play with is marbles in the school yard.
Now read what Skerrit says blindly. “Skerrit has said over the years teachers in Dominica have made phenomenal strides under the Labour Party Administration.” Also, read the truth as Skerrit is in denial, read this: Skerrit is now claiming that over the years of his failed corrupt administration, Dominica has increased phenomenal the strides of poverty, deprovation, vulgarity, misuse of states funds, abusive of parliam under Labour Party Administration

Alas Skerro I am a labourite and a teacher but you just told a big lie Wii. Teachers made strides under DLp? Honestly speaking a few persons made strides under the DLp but I am not sure they are teachers though. Yes, folks like Tony Astaphan, Roosevelt Skerrit, Gloria Shillingford, Regie Austrie, Emmanuelle Nanthan, George Nanthan, Lennox and Alick Lawrence, Sam Raphael, Gerard Burton, Blackmore, Mc Intyre, Petter St. Jeanne, Melissa Skerrit and Francine Barron sure made great financial strides! January 18, 2019

@Liz M you are right you know because we badly need a new set of eyes, nose, ears, hands and feet in office. And yes you are right because with a new government we most likely would see a reversal of the DLP pattern, of only a few making progress and the majority have to climb the steps of the financial center only to take a huge fall. I want to be in a country where the majority can boast of making big strides. We were taught to work hard to earn a living but TEACHER SKERRIT told us we were taught incorrectly and rather, taught us to beg. That’s not strides, is it?

U, you have mentioned NOTHING about the sorrowful plight of teachers. Use your influence and persuasive ability to convince your demigod to raise teachers’ salary. Also, to appoint teachers who have been teaching for many years , some over ten years without any sort of appointment. Personal attacks on % adds nothing to the debate. What a joke double Dr PhD can you point to anything significant you did as a teacher or have done for them? the entire public service if filled with persons who have not been appointed and you know that this is deliberate and part of your bigger scheme of things, to keep hardworking and efficient public servants silent and under your control and to allow those Square Pegs that you have appointed to hold the country to ransom. This man is full of contradictions. The teachers are literally crying out for a well deserved increase in salary, and to be appointed, for they have the qualifications coupled with the experience. Despite these obvious anomalies in the system, the PM is endeavoring to paint a rosy picture of the teaching profession and additionally giving credit to himself. This is truly chucklesome. No matter how favorable a picture Doctor² Skerrit attempts to paint of Dominica can mask the complete mismanagement of the country’s affairs. Education, Healthcare, Economy, Infrastructure, National Security, Public Service, Agriculture, Manufacturing are all in dire straits. Not one of these sectors is functioning as it ought to. The incumbent government shows a callous disregard for taxpayers’ money. I’ll like someone to honestly refute what I’ve written. Stand up for the TRUTH even if it means standing ALONE!

Most teachers live in subtle poverty from paycheck to paycheck. Teaching is a noble profession but an unrewarding one financially. At times they put so much effort into their work that they neglect their own children and the rest of their family. Two of the professions that truly need to be rewarded adequately and handsomely are teachers and nurses. Why is it that every time deserving and down trodden public servants ask to be fairly compensated for their strenuous efforts on the job, Mr. Skerrit refuses and his spineless Cabinet Ministers rubberstamp everything he says and does? The stubborn refusal to give the teachers and the nurses an increase in salary and provide them with better working conditions is heartless. In fact, all public servants should get a ‘top up’ on their meager wages and salaries. The government needs to grow a conscience.

This statement is a real labourite lie. Skerrit is living blindly in cloud Koo Koo land. Skerrit was never recognised as this Minister of Education who could led this important ministry. If I recall from my memory, this man was hardly ever seen and usually was late for most meeting and also when invited to a forum. Within the ministry watching and observing his behaviour, Skerrit was all over the place as a young immature “boy”. If I recall this 31 year old boyish was given a toy that he could not manage well, and just became a play thing, one who looked for fame which is what every immature young person would do, that is to go out and attract attention for self and given a “big mature man”, job to manage was a big mistake and we in the ministry struggled to catch up with his…

Lord of all I survey! Where is the bum minister of education? Seems like not a man can utter a word if the dictator doesn’t permit him. And so Skerritt has to come out to defend every statement. Int it interesting a man who came into politics from teaching is so wealthy? Wonder how his wealth was accumulated! Could it be from his monthly salary? One of the poorest states in the Caribbean has one of the richest PM. Hopefully the incoming UWP will solicit the services of the FBI or Scotland Yard and get to work speedily. Our schools are like horse stables. Teachers are under paid. Yet Skerritt is rejoicing at strides made by teachers. Where is the president of the teachers association to shoot down that rubbish?
