Pointe Michel business man calls for help

Owner of the popular fish spot in Pointe Michel, Keyman Roberts, is calling on the Pointe Michel Village Council to take action to address a problematic matter of stagnant water near his business place.

The Fishpot is a place where locals and visitors converge every night to get meals made from local fish.
According to Roberts, he has made several reports about the stagnant water which  poses a health problem but no one seems to care.
“I have had this issue now for ten years and have gone to Environmental Health and the Pointe Michel Village council but the problem remains,” he complained.
He said the council did some work but that has not solved the problem.
“They have done something but that’s not enough…the water stinks and has mosquitoes which is a major health hazard but no one seems to care,” he stated.
Roberts said the situation is affecting his business and he can’t take it.
“I have spoken to even the Parl Rep all [with] a view to getting that solved but no one is taking action. It is high time for this matter to fix,” he remarked.
A Council spokesperson has said that they are aware of the situation and is doing its best to ensure that the situation is fixed soon.

But all you really not easy! The people are the ones who are littering. Why is it the council business? Yes the council is responsible for the community in certain instances. But who throwing their rubbish there? The same persons around who should manage their garbage properly and put out only the collection days when the truck will be passing. If everyone would do just that what a clean community that would be. Bag your garbage & keep in your yard bin and put out only on collection days.

Before you make everything political .. Ask yourself “Do I manage my garbage well? Do I litter? Am I part of the problem putting my garbage on the roadside outside of collection days.?
Everyone change your attitude and pay not be nasty, and throw things everywhere and anywhere.
Who the mosquito biting but you self living in the area. Be neat, clean people. It is not hard to do. You manufacture your garbage .. It is yours until the collection day. Cover in a safe place till…

“If dengue breaks out government and local government can be blamed; I can be abusive to public property because it is my tax money.” These words may help to describe the placebo and negative mind set that prevails in the minds of some ADULTS in Dominica ; damage and blame and make excuses for bad behavior. It is always somebody else fault, somebody else problem to solve.
There were numerous reports of the “authorities” cleaning dumper loads of trash in urban areas. Did the garbage fall from the sky ? Did it evolve out of nothing ? Do we have any regard for our health, hygiene and sanitation? If plague breaks out it will not be selective. If there is an outbreak of dengue fever we all will suffer.
As adults we must stop spreading germs, time to stop the litter. We can be more responsible in keeping ourselves safe and clean.

Under this current administration all sectors of government is in complete disarray. No public entity functions satisfactorily. The people are exposed to all kinds of health hazards and hardships. This is no frivolous accusation. Proof of this was conspicuous when thousands went aboard the Chinese floating hospital seeking urgent medical attention. Other evidence of the same could be seen at the Red Beggars’ Clinic when people were pushing one another like children at a busted piñata. Dominica needs a government that puts people first.

Ibo who throw all the bottles and styrofoam there? It is not the Government. The residents themselves. Why spin a story to make it political? So everything is politics? Apparently some of us have no commonsense. We are our own enemies. We dispose of garbage anywhere. Just fly the receptacle by the bay side. So I think you should be objective and tell the people to keep their communities clean. Look at the picture well. What is there but domestic garbage – Bottles glasses etc. Even a pallet they threw down there. So if you do not keep the area clean and you dump everything there, what do you expect to see .. The scene in the picture. Case in point visit the water place and you will see how they litter there as well. Pointe Michel people living close to Keman must be tidy and dispose of their garbage in a proper manner. Manage, bag their stuff and place on the roadside on the day of collection. That is the truth. Pure nastiness from some of the residents.

If “A Council spokesperson has said that they are aware of the situation and is doing its best to ensure that the situation is fixed soon”, I don’t know what sitting on their hands would look like. The man claimed this has been going on for the better part of 10 years.

This is a cesspit for crying out loud. When people live in filth, they often don’t notice their surroundings are filthy. This man highlighted the problem and instead of jumping into action to correct it, they dish out the same tired platitude “we are doing our best”. Stop doing your best and fix the problem. It affects the entire community.

Those parasites of Skerrit putting the onus on the little businessman to rectify the problem. The businessman could barely lift his head above the surface of the water. He doesn’t have the wherewithal. Government is directly responsible. They spend all their time politicking and bad mouthing the opposition. Meanwhile the country and its inhabitants catching hell. The people’s wellbeing is of no consequence to this sadistic regime. Their one and only concern is to retain power using any means necessary. They don’t want any sunlight on their myriad of corrupt practices.

Ibo France really?? You seem to be out of line. so everything is politics? Who dispose their garbage there? Did the PM pr his “parasites” come to La Pointe and dumped the rubbish in that area? You soutewaying persons instead of telling them to stop dumping their garbage there. And when someone speaks common sense, you call them names. The inhabitants around Keman’ s place should be more respectful of others and dispose their garbage properly. Not fly the mt receptacle over the wall. Ibo please be realistic. I am not saying that Keman should clean there but it could be the same patrons who do those things after seating on the wall to enjoy the fish and drink. Look at the stuff .. pure household items and drink cans.

People must learn to dispose their garbage off properly, that being said, garbage bins need to be provided ( adequate bins, not just the small one or two or a plastic bag tied somewhere).

i think the health inspectors must shut businesses in the vicinity down and have the place cleaned, also for businesses who sell food around, try to do some cleaning on a regular basis, don’t wait for it to get out of hand, whatever is causing this water to be stagnant remove it.

This shouldn’t be. Not in these modern times and a small country like Dominica. This is a one-day job with heavy machinery. C’mon leaders of the Nature Isle!

    • Joseph John
      February 1, 2019

So this one day job could be accomplished by five people in half a day. What about the trash, Did it evolve ?
If you are really a Londoner you would know that the” leaders” would not even allow the place to exist and the owners would be facing all kinds of fines

Oh my goodness, these are the things they do not like when people express their disgust with the way that they are being treated, by those in authority, too manytimes when those in authorities failed to address situations like this and they start talking, some of us keep saying that they are washing their dirty laundry in public, giving Dominica bad name. This site is gross, it is nasty, I can’t believe what I am seeing, imagine a tourist that a photo of this nastiness, posting it on social media, imagine they are building hotels and the place is so nasty unbelievable

It’s the government’s responsibility to provide infrastructure to its citizens. Clearly the Pal Rep and others have failed miserably on this particular issue. Hopefully John Public applies pressure for the well needed resolution of this issue.

This man got a business, why can’t he just get a backhoe to remove the stones blocking the water? Why is he depending on the authorities to help clean up in front of his business? Come man, do something to help yourself!

agreed , further more from the look of it ,the garbage, its trash (empty soda bottles , Styrofoam containers cans and bottles ) from his own business .
first help your self by making sure ur patrons don’t pollute the area and then someone else may lend u a hand .

He doesn’t have a garbage bin to dispose of the garbage. Its clear to see that the content of the garbage is from his business place. I guess he wants to Parl Rep to clean mess generated from his fish place..

Ha! This comment speaks volumes about why Dominica remains in such STAGNANT conditions. We pay taxes to employ a top-heavy government, yet when a service is needed people should do it themselves. I’ve heard it all, Dominicans should fix their own hospitals, pave their own roads, build their own hurricane shelters, and international airport.

Wimpie, That is exactly the way it should be looked at . The man has a duty to keep his business environment safe for his customers. If it was my business I would dig a nice big drain to take the water away., bring in some soil and plant some bananas to cook and sell with my fish. I would occupy the land within the jurisdiction of squarters occupation rights.
In the old days you just get a few friends to help and serve them lunch and a drink. In the old days people planted flowers or flowering trees to enhance their property without excuses.
Nowadays private citizens cannot do anything to help or protect themselves. WOW.
