Dominicans are currently assembled outside the Public Service Union building speaking out against what they say is rampant corruption in government and an unfair judicial system.

The public assembly which commenced from around 8:30 this morning was organised by Citizens Forum for Good Governance.

Member of the organization Atherton Martin say Dominicans have been too long been treated unfairly by the Dominica Labour Party government.

“If they cannot hear they will feel. We put people there to serve us, if they cannot hear they will feel. That is the lesson of human history. Everybody has a limit. Police officers who have been working under poor conditions, under meager salaries. It is time to speak out,” he said.

Meantime talk show host Lennox Linton has asked Dominicans to be not afraid.

“This morning I was on the talk show talking about this event,” he stated. “The police somehow got the idea that a demonstration was being planned for the courthouse this morning, so they went out in full force barricading the courthouse, so that if we wanted to go to the courts to see what was happening in our courts, they were to prevent us.”

Linton also deliberated on issues relating to the last by-elections and electoral reform.

Today’s assembly is being held as the United Workers Party’s dual citizenship case is being heard in the high court high court against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Petter St.Jean.

I must see the day when all that hating and bad blood against the government stops. Sadly it seems that it won’t come anytime soon. Granted you may think that the prime minister and his government are corrupt, and by all means you are entitled to your opinion. But when every single matter proposed by them is a problem and you as a citizen have nothing but negativity and criticism and malice towards your nations leader, who really is the greater offender. Food for thought to whom it may concern from an impartial eye.

      This I can appreciate.

majority of people appreciate the good that the government is doing… i know i do……but anybody knows that nothing is for free. the people feel mistrust simply because they do not know what is in the fine print. when u place a void in peoples head something must full that void….and if the P.M keep up his shadow games it will be nothing but contempt…..we want the nice things we all seeing.. true, but not at the cost of our souls…. let the people decide how much we are willing to give… don’t just rape us like an angry gorilla, like we have to take it whether we want it or not. don’t u have the need for a voice and a choice?? i know i do….. don’t i deserve a voice and a choice about a 27 million dollar loan that my children going to inherit. don’t u think think the government could spend that money more wisely.

for fear of DNO not posting my comment I will turn it down a notch……..its hard to contain my feelings when I read the comments of those who are blind to the tragedy of our Nation….

INFRASTRUCTURE without HUMAN RESOURCE equals nothing….

most of our children will sit along the side of those same roads we boasting, and watch as Chinese, tourists and all other nations (WHO ALWAYS SEEM TO BE MORE WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION THAN DOMINICANS) drive the merry way along, with not so much as a sideways glance.

The Dominican Government “Proposes” to spend 27 million on a presidential palace by way of a loan, when they are indebted to and refuse to pay the Public Works Corporation which itself may soon need to take a loan to pay its employees wages. Don’t the educated fools of Dominica find this a gross misplacement of PRIORITIES????

CONSUMERS AND LABORERS: Where is our spending power????????????????????

MEN AND WOMEN: Where is our PRIDE, to say that we are enabled to do for ourselves and our families???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

LIKE BOB MARLEY SING: “NEVER LET A POLITICIAN GRANT U A FAVOR, HE WILL ALWAYS WANT TO OWN U FOREVER!!”

DOMINICANS: have sold their pride for everyday things that they could achieve and attain for themselves. AND NOW THE WEAR THE BRAND OF THEIR OWNER. They want intelligent people to ignore their good senses and join their meaningless existence.

DNO may choose to hush me for speaking my 2 cents……but just like someone else i am determined to be heard, and i will let the WORLD know about my experience here in little DOMINICA

  11. Is not what is wrong anymore.
    March 31, 2011

In Dominica presently, but sadly, if a thief forces his way into your house, attempts to or steals your TV set ,you happen to see the thief and shouts “Hey, what you doing there stealing my TV set,” it is you the owner of the house who is wrong to shout out, not the thief who is caught stealing that is WRONG. Does that scenario sound strange? No, Non.

Dominica’s problem of Bad Governance, allegations and factual revelations of corrupt practices, DUAL CITIZENSHIP of parliamentarians, heavy political influences of our institutions, decline in Agriculture, manufacturing and so on, a promised Layou River Hotel Project in ruins etc., etc., etc., cannot be about Linton, Athie, Angelo, Matt and others who speak out fearlessly against those ills. They are not the ones in POWER, or in Govt. They are not the ones setting policies. Just as those in Govt. and their supporters have the right to speak, those who oppose Govt. policies, corruption in Public Office, bad Governance etc. also have that RIGHT.

Dominicans generally know who are responsible for those problems. One day, people will wake up wishing that there would be patriotic, honest, truthful, God-Fearing Dominicans to SPEAK OUT against injustices and corruption and to turn the tide for a better life. Only TIME WILL TELL. TIME IS THE REVELER. STEALING is WRONG, IS WRONG , IS WRONG. CORRUPTION CRIPPLES ANY NATION and is wrong, wrong, wrong. Corruption could not have been wrong for the UWP, but RIGHT for the ruling DLP. The home owner who catches the thief cannot be wrong. It must be the thief who enters and steals who must be wrong.

How many Dominicans have allowed immorality, illegality, partisanship, greed, selfishness to CLOUD their better JUDGEMENT? How many Dominicans have allowed their selfish ways and BLIND SUPPORT FOR PARTY to predominate over their SPIRITUAL FACULTIES? How many Dominicans have allowed their support for creeping DICTATORSHIP and CORRUPT PRACTICES as a SUBSTITUTE for the BURNING LOVE OF THIS WONDERFUL ISLE OF NATURE? DOMINICA. Study carefully the life of plants, the bees, the chicken, the ants, for example, and see if there is any corruption or ill will in those living things. But alas, Human beings with the ability to think, engage in all sorts of evil ways causing their countries and their fellowmen to reel in pain.

In a DEMOCRACY the structure is FEDERAL-STATE-CITIZENS-GOD.Many talk about democracy, but don’t know what it means. We are just repeating what governments wants us to believe.Although there is freedom of the press, freedom of speech, the right to assemble in Dominica;what dominicans are not realising is that laws are being passed which on the surface seems real good, but the devil is in the details. The opposition, the press and anyone with anti-government thinking better watch out.In any nation the rule of law should be the LAWS of GOD,however there are many people in high places who have fought to push out God out of goverment. This is the reason why so many “black countries” are corrupt. There is an atmosphere of “SEWO” and “SCRATCH MY BACK,I’LL SCRATCH YOURS” in Dominica. The Opposition in Dominica really are comical, but nevertheless they are vital for check and balances. The courts, the goverment are controlled by a select few who own Dominica. The press is also a vital part of check and balances. They should do professional journalism and investigation, not about vendettas or having an axe to grind, but to report to the people who elect and pay the salaries of every civil servant by the taxes they pay. When a leader says no constitution, laws or man can prevent him from being nominated for an election,it’s arrogancy and pride. The lamenting thing about this is that dominicans do not care about that shocking statement, instead they worship a man like he is God,the same way Obama is being praised.I am a Labourite by birth,my family are Labourites and frankly I was taken aback when many were saying that Prime Minister Skerrit was too young to lead.I thought that was utter nonsense and that he should be given a chance and that Dominica needs fresh young blood. However, that singular statement about “NO CONSTITUTION” dismayed me.That is a revelation of how he is going to govern and his political beliefs. The greatest resource of a country is not its natural resources, but its human resources.Once you have the people depending on the government, they are basically controlled by the government.

  20. Their right to protest
    March 31, 2011

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states quite clearly that citizens have the RIGHT to peacefully protest against injustices, corruption and bad governance. Citizens all over the world have exercised their sacred RIGHT so to do. History is replete of examples. Presently in North Africa people are again showing the world that enough is enough and are protesting against Corrupt dictatorial Govt. They want a better life where Free and Fair elections, Free speech and the rule of Law prevails. They are demanding more jobs and a better standard of living.

In some countries, Leaders have been amassing huge wealth at the expense of the majority of the people. While the RICH get RICHER, the POOR are getting POORER. Even in oil-rich countries,a significant percentage of the people live in poverty.

Our country is in dire straits. The economic situation is declining. The productive sectors, agriculture, manufacturing etc. are at an all time low. Dominica is producing very little, therefore our imports greatly surpass our exports. Dominica has become almost totally dependent on foreign assistance. We have many natural resources from which the country could be earning revenue, but strategies for development are based more on the EXTERNAL than INTERNAL mobilisation.

History has taught all of us that when a people can take it no more, when their economic situation worsens, when Human rights and the democratic process are trampled upon, the people will eventually protest for change. Dominicans MUST TAKE HEED. Don’t you all see what is happening to our beautiful country?

I have been out of Dominica for seven (7) years just came back a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked at the development. With all the negative comments from UWP and some of their supporters, I expected to see Dominica backwards, but was surprised. UWP leaders and those negative talkers are BIG LIARS. They are just jealous of the young man from Vielle Case because he is doing a much better job than what they did.

I guess they want Dominica to be backward. GET A LIFE LENNOX, ATHERTON, and UWP LEADERS.

A little less talk (demonstration) and a little more action from you guys!

Dont be afraid you will continue singing for your supper what I would suggest you do is go down the streets speak to the man and women boys and girls on the streets hear their cry and see who is the Bigger Liars when one wants to know how people are doing you take to the streets meet then and ask them and they willl tell you dont take it from your friends in high places SKERITT will continue to keep the people poor and in doing so they become beholding to him well those days are long gone we have to stand up for justice regardless if you like it or not.
You said you just return to DA after being out for 7 years what the h—ll do you know about how the people are doing and you should be very ashamed of yourself speaking about being JEALOUS of the man get yourself some check up I do believe you a the one who is jealous of these men who can stand up and say it as it is and in doing so take the time educating the people of what is going on on the ISLAND why dont you try it yourself .
You mention development have you been to the Princess Hospital since your return would like your family or yourself to be in a hospital where so little care is done because they dont have the proper equipments to help the people were you enjoying good health care where you were residing before returning home and a you one of those folks that out take t duel – citizenship so when things get heated you just jump on the plane back to where you came from, those of us that have been living out side of D’ICA should come back with the hopes of helping to rebuild not to get involved in the politce with blinders over our eyes we have to take time to adjust to what is taking place and always have positive attitude in your case your true colors are showing and by that you a not contributing to a healthier D’ICA. you enjoy freedom of speech but LINTON, ATHERTON and UWP Leaders should not enjoy the same fereedom you cant have your cake and eat it too.
Just in case you do not know what is the roll of the OPPOSITION let me refresh your memory they are to remind the people of all the promises the GOVT have made during the election and to hold them responsible they are also expected to make recommendations discuss legistation which concern the people of the island and if you take the time to read the CONSITUTION and the rule of LAW you might surprise yourself. So before you start to spin your brand of what is good in D”ICA frist take the time to meet with the people and another thing this haven got anything to do with different political parties it have to do with the people and the disrespect that they suffer under the hand of a one man GOVT.

Goverment withdraw the subsidees they were giving Dowasco; they made DOWASCO stop putting metres and saying they should even stop billing us for water. when they do so where is DOWASCO going to get money to pay it workers etc Right now the Workers of DOWASCO cant sleep there jobs not safe is that right. and making it look like Ettinoff cant do his work just because they know they want to sell DOWASCO to the chines. Pity, otherwise smart people, rather than advise them fellas to cease and desist in their useless machinations and attempt to bring the government down, should help them with building a solid platform for progress, canvass the whole of Dominica selling their plans and prepare for the next elections.

Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.

      Scripture:
Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. Proverbs 3:25-26 (New International Version)

I am a lover of words. I love how words come together to form a thought. I enjoy looking for variations of words and will often times look up similar words to see if they have the same impact. Expect and confidence, are two such words. They ultimately lead you back to the same thing; Reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing.

When we have expectations or confidence in something, we are saying to the world; so it is said, so it shall it be done. We believe that wherever or whatever our confidence relies on shall come to past. We believe that the object of our expectations shall come to past without question or doubt. The funny thing about expectation or confidence is that we are in control of how we gauge our expectations. In other words, we set the bar for ourselves.

As children we have little or no expectations of the world. As time goes by and we begin to experience difference aspects of life, we begin to develop expectations on just about everything and everybody. Many of the things that we expect are either taught to us or we develop our own criteria for what we expect.

We expect life and people to be a certain way. We expect to obtain certain things, meet certain people or to develop certain talents and relationships. We expect certain things for ourselves and for our families. I have learned one thing in my lifetime if nothing else and that is; our expectations will frequently change.

Today I ask you, what do you expect out of life? Where does your confidence lie? Who do you trust? Where is your faith? Too often we have trust in the wrong things or people. Our confidence is often deposited in the wrong places. Our faith often lost and can’t be found. The above scripture says; “the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.”

When we put our confidence in God everything else will fall into place.

      Be Blessed

      Prayer:
Lord, Jesus, give faith and confidence to the ones who read these words, so that they will want to reach out their hands to their friends and pray that pain, despair, and sickness will be healed. Give them wisdom to know best how to pray, fill their prayers with the faith that heals and their hands with the power that gives life and comfort. Father God, you are my strength and my confidence I will trust in the Lord with all that I am. I will let go and let God be in control this day. I will surrender my all to him alone. Emanuel, Prince of Peace, Lord of Lords. You are known by many names but we know that You are the great I Am. Father God, thank You for keeping us once again. Thank You Lord for watching over us and our loved ones. Thank You Lord for the Blood that was shed so that each of us could enter into Your kingdom. Thank You Father for loving me that much. Lord, we pray Your hedge of protection, we plead the Blood of Jesus, We submit our will to Yours as we let go and give You control over our lives. Bless Your name Lord. Thank You Lord. Hallelujah Lord. Amen.

Think about the people God has placed in your life. They’re not there by accident. God brings people to you for a purpose. We should live with this awareness that, “I am here to add value to people. I am here to help them succeed.” Don’t go around always thinking, “I wonder what that person can do for me. I wonder what they have to offer.” No, we should have the attitude, “What can I do for them? How can I help them come up higher? Can I teach them something I know? Can I connect them with someone who can help them?” Don’t make the mistake of going through life ingrown. Instead, be a dream releaser. Use your talent, your influence and your experience, not just to accomplish your goals, but to help release a dream in someone else.

Remember, there is nothing more rewarding than to lay down at night knowing that you helped someone else become better. You not only fulfilled your purpose for that day, you did your best. It may have just been a two-minute phone call where you encouraged someone; but when you live as a dream releaser, you’ll see your own dreams come alive as well! hope tis will help you see what am talking about!

it’s amazing, when one listens to the radio talk shows and hears the bile being spewed and the sentiments being expressed and in the manner in which they are expressed, we do get the feeling that dominica is in a state of un-rest and that dominicans are genuinely fed up with the performance of their government. and then one looks at these organized acts of protest and only see a sparse crowd and the same few fanatics of the opposition and one comes to the realization that the views expressed on these radio talk shows do not represent by any means the true sentiments of the vast majority of dominicans.

these acts only go to show that the vast majority of dominicans are actually satisfied with the progress made by their goverment, the majority of dominicans are actually to occupied in some form of productive activity to attend these gatherings, had it been the other way around, much more dominicans would be out to support the protests.

so hats of to the government of dominica for keeping the greater part of it’s population satisfied, and continue to work toward the betterment of our nation and the satisfaction of all dominicans.

  47. John Brown
    March 31, 2011

DEMOCRACY IS FOUNDED on faith in “the will of the people.” leaders have the legitimate right to rule only with the electoral support of the majority. The UWP leaders and their subsidiaries can’t seem to get that in their heads. Now a days they begin and end their remarks with the invocation of the word “democracy”.

They claim to know and speak for the DOMINICAN people. However, “the will of the people” is being legally challenged so the word democracy coming from them, has become nothing more than an empty political mantra. I say this because UWP is ignoring and trying to oppress the “will of the people”, while at the same time preaching on about DEMOCRACY.

Did not the electorate represent the authentic voice of the people? Isn’t electors usually chosen by popular vote and crown the winner? What the UWP want is not for the court to order a do over, but for the court to rule the runner up; the winner no matter what percentage of the vote they got. will that be “the will of the people”?

The talk about legitimacy that we hear now don’t stem from “we the people”, but from partisan angry groups that cannot excecpt the fact that their party lost the election. We the majorrity has bestow legitimacy on the PM and Mr. St. Jean despite the shenanigans of the UWP and their subsibiry. We made it clear on election day that “we the people” accept the government and that’s all the legitimacy that is needed.

      March 31, 2011

I think you better change your name. John Brown would turn in his grave if he knew that his sacred heroic name was associated with your views.. Personally I see that as a grave insult to his legacy. This man died, he was executed, he and his sons fighting the government because he disapproved of what they were doing i.e Slavery in America…

You don’t know too much about the democracy your preach about I can tell.. Democarcy is even more about the rights of the minority than it is about the rule of the majority!!! I feel so sorry for my country Dominica, you guys lost. It will take a Moses to deliver you from the influence of indignity, stupidity, mandecancy. Immorality, no principles, no values, the indifference to wrong doing.. I fear for the next generation of dominicans. Shame of you people.. I don’t think I could ever live among you people, you make me sick to my stomach. disgusting!

“I don’t think i could ever live among you people, you make me sick to my stomach. disgusting
I am so happy the day I decided to leave this colony of fools”.YOUR WORDS

It is easier to be a “critic” than to render your own country its
proper due; it is easier to be a so-called “patriot” than to help make your community
a better place, it is easier to be a so-called “lover of democarcy” than to treat your own country man with love, respect and understanding.

A great many people believe they are smart and can educate others, but when they talk, what you really hear is merely them voicing their prejudices. Intolerance, my friend, is the last defense of the insecure. You possess a mind not merely twisted, but actually sprained!!!

The greatest dangers to our Democarcy lurks in insidious encroachment by people like you living overseas, claiming to have left the plantation, but actally only moved from the field to the house. You have not left any colony, you are a house slave, you’re dupe into thinking that because you are now living with “masa”, that that’s your home.

That tells how smart you are, but we still love you and we will be here building a place for you to return to when “masa” is done raping and abusing you.

      March 31, 2011

Yaw Yaw let me tell you what is going on in DA. Lennox, Athie and the rest of the forum for good governance cannot come to terms with the level of development taking place in D/ca at this moment. They have come to realise that the Prime Minister statement on staying in power for the next 20years is truely a reality. Let me outline to you some of the developments:

      1. The windsorpark stadium
      2. The Dominica Grammar School
      3. The Yes You Care Programme
      4. The Increase in Scholarships for students studying overseas
5 The Roseau to Portsmouth road.
6.The canefield to Pond Casse road
      7.The melvillehall airport road
      8. The D/ca Statehouse and the other structural develoments to go with it
9.The Housing revolution. 4% loans at the Aid Bank for people who want to build houses
10.The State of the art hospital soon to be built next year.
      11. Free medical for people above the ages of 60 and below 18.
      12. The reduction in personal income tax
      13. The soon to be built hotel where public works presently is

And the list can go on and on. Note all this is taking place whilst the world is experiencing economic downturn. Whitchchurch has just opened a new supermarket in Portsmouth employing over 70 people. 7-11Miniyart has opened 3 supermarkets in a short space of time. Isn’t that testimony that the economy is thriving. And list of other businesses goes on.

Yaw Yaw I hope that clears your mind on your concern about what is happening in DA

      • Conscious
        March 31, 2011

Free medical and the hospital does not even have basic supplies and much of the physical facility is in need of repairs? Have you spent some time at the PMH recently? Last week, I saw some patients in a section of a ward that looked as if it was a storage room before before being put to use as part of the ward? Lack of space at the facility. What good is it to boast of free care when there is a lack of supplies, specialists and adequate and comfortable accommodation at the main health facility on the island? And there is no such thing as free service. Taxpayers are meeting the bill.

Whitchurch and Miniyart are in Portsmouth because of the 1000 foreign medical students there, who we welcome. While you are boasting, DCP has laid off more than 90 workers and is gradually withdrawing from Dominica. Since it is the biggest manufacturing enterprise on the island, it means that sector is in decline. The hotels have laid off workers. LIAT is going to lay off workers here soon. DOWASCO may have to do the same.

So, please put things in perspective and stop being one-sided.

        • ???????????
          March 31, 2011

        14. the Farmers program
        15. the numerous feeder roads
        16. Water supply projects in wanner, Campbell and elsewhere
        17. The expansion at the deepwater habour
        18. Development of numerous tourist sites
        19. Karlinago and Petite Savanne Playing Field project
        20. the RIM Project – the road to the valley
        21. Irrigation project at the Gardens
        22. and much more

        • concerned
          March 31, 2011

All what u have outlined is the duty and responsibility of the government to do. The government has to build roads, schools, take care of the farmers and the Agriculture sector ( which i can say they are not doin). The country is unstable and is on the very verge of collapse.

Please pay a visit to the hospital, admit yourself on the ward, get diagnosed with Hypertension or Diabetes and feel the pains of the PMH inability to provide even pressure medication for its patients.
IV fluids that patient need cause they are dehydrated they dont even have. So get your facts straight.

I would really like to hear you talk if you were to be in a positon where u wouldnt be able to pay for a surgery but hey i guess all you would need to do is go with your begging bowl up Skerrits steps!!
