Color clash in parliament

Norris Prevost
Norris Prevost

Member of Parliament for Roseau Central, Norris Prevost, appears to be taking in stride an incident which took place in parliament on Monday when he was asked to leave by Speaker of the House, Alix Boyd-Knights, because of the color of his shirt.

He was escorted out by the Sergeant-at-Arms but the MP thinks the hand of God is involved in the entire matter.

Norris appeared in parliament, which is currently debating the 2013 national budget, in a purple shirt jack but this did not go down well with  Boyd-Knights who quickly pointed out that it violated house rules.

“The speaker told me she didn’t like that color,” Prevost told DNO, although he refused to reveal the color of the shirt. “It’s her judgement, it’s her authority, so she told me to change my color…”

Prevost said said he was escorted out and he went to change into a blue shirt jack and this seemed to have appeased the House Speaker. Blue is the symbolic color of the United Workers Party.

“I came back in blue and she was happy,” he stated. “So the blue brings happiness to people and I am asking all Dominicans to move to the blue and to wear the blue.”

According to Prevost he left home for parliament with two shirt jacks of the same type; the one he first wore to parliament and the blue one. He noted that since he normally doesn’t wear party colors at national events he opted to wear the other one.

“I said I was going to be on television and people of all colors are looking,” he related. “I didn’t want to push my blue in anybody’s face …little did I know that she (the House Speaker) would prefer the blue…”

Prevost believes God’s hands were at work in the matter. “God does his work and I went to put on my blue and came back and she was happy,” he said.

UWP political leader and member for the Marigot constituency Edison James, was also ordered to leave the House when he refused to take instructions from the speaker while voicing his opinion in parliament in connection with the same matter.

U want them to crack down on crimes…yet u want the to excuse him this time for… grrr.

Its these kinda suggestions that are the reasons why we have so much crime.

If we went by the rules, being if the rules themselves even make true sense, then we would not have these stupid crimes. There would be too much fear to break the rules.

Remember I said if these rules, aka laws, made sense. (ALOT OF THEM DO NOT)

Chow Mein: The National Dress Act of July 1971 details the colours of Shirt Jacks that can be worn in the House, and purple and blue are not on the list.

Because ppl are just commenting on what you DNO wrote and commenting without knowing the fact. So they are just bashing the speaker which is not right. DNO please update your story so you can educated the ppl who read the stories. This too can be useful for a child writing GSAT to know the dress code of the house of assembly.

    “…According to the National Dress Act Chapter 30:02, the formal dress for the Commonwealth of Dominica to be worn at official or ceremonial functions, sittings of the House of Assembly and sittings of any court shall be as follows;
    a) short-sleeved shirt jacket worn over long trousers
    b) closed shoes or sandals with or without socks
    c) the colours of the shirt jackets and long trousers shall be conventional…”

  22. Muslim_Always

First problem: A woman should NEVER be able to chair over men. Women generally become emotionally unstable and arrogant when they yield power. Their emotions cloud their judgement.

Second issue: Before she sent out Norris Prevost she echoed that it has been an issue constantly spoken about yet some people were not taking heed. As much as I dislike Alix Boyd-Knight and her feminist ways, she is RIGHT.

Last issue: It seems like the speaker of the house loves to pick on the opposition members. The opposition must be wise and do not allow that opportunity; fighters look for one thing – a fight.

    • POSITIVE
      July 30, 2013

Muslim is nonsense you taking about woman should never be able to chair over men. Men put their self in that position, you doh see all over the world women doing better that men at school and putting themselves in high position. men staying home to take care of the house and the women working. you guys are just pure lazy and have no ambition.
norris prevost know well what he was doing, he know is sobber colours for the hous and he going with a bright purple shirt. And he still saying he go with two shirts so he change to the blue one. wicked that man do will leave with them and not after. stop taking the house for all you play ground,And elderly man like you who know better

      July 30, 2013

That muslim outlook on women is reprehensible. You mean to say that your mother, the person, who give birth to you is inferior to your father? We are in 2013 and not the middle ages.

      • Wosh la..
        July 30, 2013

He did not say that. He gave his reason why Women should never be allowed to mediate over men.words to that effect. Why cant we just repect someone else’s opinion ? Comment objectively but respectfully, everyone has an opinion but not everyone has the same opinion. If that were the casee, the world would be a booring place, you would have no opinion to object to. It is your opinion and i’m sure many others, that women should not, ”’quote” be made to be inferior to men, ”unquote”. In the Muslim faith there are millions of women who beleive and practice that the man is the head. We on the other hand preach the same doctrine, the man is the head of this and that . Then we turn around and put the head under the foot and rejoicing, Woman time. We have to be tolerant, try to understand where someone is coming from, for man, and woman fear what they dont understand.

Before you left your house didn’t you know that you did not want to wear the blue shirt becaus of the stupid reasons you stated? So why did you take a blue shirt with you? You also know of the dress code of the Parliament, because you are not a stranger to that assembly, so why did you want to provoke the speaker and waste her time with your behavior? Come on!

What a foolish way to gain attention, but certainly not intelligent votes.

      July 30, 2013

What ignorance and stupidity your talking about. Prevost followed the dress code. There is nothing in the dress code that says you cannot where purple shirtjack, black , green etc. The man was properly dress. Why does the speaker think the colour will change his metallity or contribution? For a lawyer, Ms Boyd has proved that she lacks the level of maturity and intelligence for this high position. Folks like this don’t care about anything thats is substantial that can contribute to country developement, they care about how pretty you look and nothing else. WAste of time!

    Magic of The Color Blue

Blue links with and stimulates the throat chakra. The throat chakra is
often referenced as the “power center” and “the greatest center in the body”
because it is the primary center of expression and communication. Thus, the
effect of blue upon this center is quite profound. It connects us to holistic
thought, and gives us wisdom and clarity, enhancing communication and
speech. Solarized blue water is an excellent tonic for laryngitis or
inflammation of the larynx. The Blue Ray is one of the greatest antiseptics
    in the world.
Blue is cooling, calming, electric and astringent. It is very good for
burns. It helps bleeding and decreases fevers. Blue relieves bursting
headaches, calms strong emotions like anger, aggression or hysteria. Blue is
good for combating itching, irritation (for instance redness of the skin) and
stress. It also soothes suffering. It is a very positive color, indicating loyalty
and reliability, as expressed in the sentiment of being “true blue.”
The highest music and art are in the greens and the blues
together. Many light blues are negative. Blue calms the passions that red
stirs up. It is intellectual as well as inspirational. A blue like the sky protects
one from the strong sun in the tropics. We see a great deal of that sky-blue
used in the hot countries in clothes as well as on the outside and the inside
of the house. Blue lowers the vitality. It breathes of heaven instead of earth.
Blue used in a north room will actually produce a cold, chilly feeling while
Blue is quieting to the violently insane or overwrought nerves.
Because Blue helps to soothe the mind, it is the color of truth,
knowledge, decisiveness, serenity and harmony. Blue is good for calming,
reconstructing and protecting. It has a pacifying effect on the nervous
system and brings great relaxation. Ideal for sleep problems, and
hyper-active children. For calming aggressive behavior in your home and your environment, reduce Red and introduce more Blue.
Personality Traits: Loyal, tactful, affectionate, inspiring, inventive,
    caring, and cautious.

Mr. Prevost, is not telling the entire truth about what transpired in the House between himself and the Speaker. The records will show that when Mr. Prevost walked in, his colour attracted the attention of the Speaker. There was an exchange between himself and the Speaker. The exchange continued to the extent that the Speaker suspended the House on her own motion to deal with the matter. When the House resumed the matter was still not settled. Mr.Prevost was insisting that his colours was not an issue and that the Speaker should show him the sections of the rules that prevented him from wearing a shirt of such colour to the House. It was after such long and vigourous debate that the Speaker asked Mr. Prevost to leave. He was escorted out and you could hear the voices of his colleagues advising him not to break any glasses. The member for Marigot was soon asked to leave the House. I suppose that was not as a result of good behavior on his part. Let the truth be told. It was not a simply excuse me and Mr. Mr. obliged as he seem to say in the report. For a while he insisted that he was not in conflict with the rules and debated with the Speaker.

As for wearing Party colours at national events. Who is Mr. Prevost speaking to? Remember when every stand pipe in Roseau was painted blue. Then there was the blue chairs that adorned every public gathering; Remeber the States Car which was assigned to PM Edison James? what colour wsit painted in? Blue of course. Remember the street lights form Taiwan that were painted in blue? Mr. Prevost’s refurbished offices on the top floor of government headquarters was painted blue. So who is Mr. Prevost speaking to. Does he believe we all live in “Club Cuckoo Land”

congratulations! thanks for refreshing our memory; now those of us with memoir poule can now remember; the truth needs to be told and people who read only what Prevost says and think it was as simple as that now know the truth. That is why I am not quick to just read/listen to one side of the story and cast judgement.

To all those who find that Mr Prevost was being childish and all that crap, there is nothing preventing the wearing of purple. This woman is just a trouble maker and tries everything to create disorder in the house. Any other speaker would most likely just made a passing comment about the shirt and move on

Observer I don’t get your venting- By what you are saying and what Mr Prevost said as quoted in the article there is no disconnection at all. You chose to give a ball by ball commentary whereas the article only gave the highlight. ” Prevost came in with a shirt that seem objectionable to the speaker – the speaker was mad and the episode came to a point where Prevost was forced out of the house”
Now all that stuff about who painted what in blue or red is just an example of how shallow our politicians are in Dominica. The childish nature of those who support these silly behavior by the politicians.

What is even more disgusting is to hear the blind party supporters claim ” Red did it so blue can do it too or Blue did it 15 years ago so red is taking it to the next level”. While all this is happening we are going nowhere.

As for wearing Party colours at national events. Who is Mr. Prevost speaking to? Remember when every stand pipe in Roseau was painted blue.

Is Mr. Prevost a stand pipe?

      Then there was the blue chairs that adorned every public gathering;

      Is Mr. Prevost a chair?

Remeber the States Car which was assigned to PM Edison James? what colour wsit painted in? Blue of course.

Is Mr. Prevost the states car or better yet is he Mr. James?

Remember the street lights form Taiwan that were painted in blue?

Is Mr. Prevost a street light?

Mr. Prevost’s refurbished offices on the top floor of government headquarters was painted blue.

      Is Mr. Prevost an office?

So who are you speaking to. Does he believe we all live in “Club Cuckoo Land”

These are the words of Mr. Prevost: He noted that since he normally doesn’t wear party colors at national events he opted to wear the other one.

He never said that he will not put a blue chair there or have a function in a blue building.
Before you start to bash the man get your facts straight.

big men who suppose to no better, behaving like children. you right god did put a hand in the matter, not for the colour of blue. mrs knight have good patience. she house clerk had to get the rules for you first mr prevost for you to admit you were wearing the wrong colour. you of all person a senior member of the house should know the rules of the house. I would live that for hector john and the other senators who do not have all the experience like you do. It a shame how some adult can behave like children, and then we wonder how our young people behave the way they do. Simple if you all do not have nothing to do or say in the house, just do like before come sign in the register and leave. stop making the house like a pappy show. shame shame shame

“The official dress (what is worn in parliament) shall be as follows, a short sleeved shirt jacket worn over long trousers, closed shoes – the colour of the shirt jacks and long trousers shall be conventional,” Boyd-Knights said, warning that no one is allowed to come to the House “in jeans and sneakers”.
My question is, what colours are considered “conventional”?

    • Malatete
      July 30, 2013

The colour purple is conventional for a bishop, just as pink is the shade associated with homosexuals and jungle-green and khaki for the military. What is conventional? Is it up to to the Speaker to determine that? I certainly would not wear purple, it simply is not my taste but unless the colour and mode of dress give cause for public ridicule I’d think she has better things to do than make such an issue out of it and draw unwanted attention to the House.

…interesting you don’t mention red. Surely if purple is unconventional so is red (…unless you are a communist, of course).

Prevost too bad-minded! First of all he has worn the blue shirt jack to the House before….I’ve seen him! The House proceedings are broadcast live. It’s a nice subtle blue, nothing loud or festive and fits in just fine with typical earth tones like brown, grey, black etc generally preferred for House proceedings. Secondly, “he left home for parliament with two shirt jacks” and chose to wear the PURPLE one? It’s really childish how these guys enjoy testing the Speaker. But then again, this was day 3 so he was probably bored and needed to have some excitement. You do you Prevost, but don’t hold your breath waiting on “all Dominicans to move to the blue”
