Linton calls UWP faithful to action

"we are not losing track of our responsibility to protect our democracy" Linton told party faithful
“We are not losing track of our responsibility to protect our democracy” Linton told party faithful

Leader of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox Linton, has told party supporters that they need to stay tuned for they will “soon be receiving calls for action.”

Addressing a crowd of party faithful in La Plaine on Saturday November 29, 2014 to officially present its candidate Ron Green he said that the actions of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) are provocative.

“You noticed how they are provoking us; you notice how we are showing restraint. You notice how they are using law enforcement now in Dominica to protect our brothers and sisters who are being brought in from overseas to vote illegally and to commit crimes in Dominica because bribery is a crime under the House of Assembly Elections Act,” Linton said.

He accused the police of protecting those he claims are breaking the Election laws.

“Now, we have rather than the police authorities intervene to prevent the bribery, they are protecting those who are accepting thee bribes and coming in to vote is criminal misconduct in the Commonwealth of Dominica. We are being provoked. But we will show restraint…we will through this, we will get through this. We are going to be watching very closely and we will be insisting in large numbers that right is done by Dominica,” he stated

He continued, “So, keep your eyes open, when your brothers and sisters come home, you talk to them. When your neighbours you know, they come take Skerrit money to vote for Skerrit against you, talk to them you have a few days they could still do the right thing.”

“We are not taking our eyes off that prize and we are not losing track of our responsibility to protect our democracy regardless of what the Electoral Commission and the police does or does not do. We, the people of Dominica, will get the job done because the power in people is greater than the people in power. So fear no more. Stay tuned for notification, stay tuned for advisory, stay tuned for our calls to action because those calls to action will be coming in the next couple of days,” Linton stated to cheering  party supporters.

In recen times it seems that I must now resort to damning and cursing Skerrit for my comments to be featured on DNO. When I compare some of the comments to what I submitted and cannot find my own, I must conclude that DNo is just another mout-piece of the UWP.

What really pisses me off about all of this is the FACT that Dominicans have been calling for this voters list issue to be dealt with since 2009. So all the circular talk from the Skerritt camp was lies lies and more lies since 2009. The voter id “lack of funding” was a farce, the multi-purpose ID was a rouse, and blocking the ever-so-silent electoral commission is just standard operating procedure!

Dominicans you have a man lying and manipulating your very laws to keep himself in power, and all you can do is point fingers on Linton?? This voter situation should be a non-issue! The mere fact we have to spend campaign time discussing “if bribery is wrong or right” and “who should/shouldn’t be able to vote” just tells you how backwards this darn place is!

  5. DUWP
    December 1, 2014

The action of the UWP is not suprising, as it is a party that deals in double standards. Here are two examples of the blatant DOUBLE standard of the UWP:

    1. The UWP from 1995 to 2009 supported and voted for Ron Green, Ron Green was a us Citizen. The UWP found nothing wrong with Mr. Green been a US citizen and representing the people of Laplaine in the Dominican Parliament. He was even elected political leader in line to become PM if the UWP had one the 2009 election. Mr. Edison James admitted that he knew Ron Green was a US citizen but he considered him a Dominican. The UWP lost the 2009 election and they immidiately proceeded to take Skeritt and St.Jean to court challenging their nomination and election to the House of Assembly because they were French citizens.

    2. In the 2000, 2005 and 2009 elections both parties brought in overseas voters ( UWP and DLP). Now that the UWP has realised that the overseas voters will not work to their benifit they have declared them mercenaries and the practice of Dominicans from overseas coming to vote has been declared criminal.

How can a party be so BOLDFACE in such matters. They display this attitude and at the same time call for justice. Justice is supposed to be blind. It appears that even in opposition the UWP is demanding special treatment under the law. What will happen if they somehow gain power, are they going to bypass the law and rule by decree? If a law does not support their cause or if they are not in favor of a particular court ruling are they going to suspend the constitution? The UWP leadership continue to sound angry and hatefull. Never before in the history of political campaigning in Dominica have voters been tageted so viciously. Before the voters would be respected as politicians beg for their votes, now the are called prostitutes, beggars and greedy. The names Voters who plan to come home to vote are forwarded to the US embassy and the IRS, according to Mr. Martin this is done so that they can be punished by his former masters the USA. If Dominica were to elect a UWP government I fear dictatorship would soon follow. so beware Dominicans, it is time to fear.

    • Deceiver
      December 1, 2014

So friend, your point is that UWP should not call for justice. Instead, regular Dominicans should just sit by and have political parties do what they will?? Just imagine if the DLP had taken the appropriate measures when the UWP first tried this scheme, it would be a non-Issue today. This is how laws are created, we see loopholes and opportunities for exploitation so we create laws that prevent these abuses from further occurring.

I just cannot understand this mentality that since one group broke a law, all groups should now be entitled to do the same. The only thing we agree on is that Linton/UWP should not be the one sounding the call for this demonstration. All the so called union, civic, church, education leaders should be pointing out the dangers of a bloated voters list and open, rampant bribery. But no, they have all been threatened, bought, or are just too ignorant to stand for whats right for the nation.

We need institutions that WORK in Dominica. Not cowardly, corrupt men and women that uphold wickedness in Dominica. They are no better than the slave drivers that kept other humans in bondage for centuries!

      • DUWP
        December 2, 2014

@Deceiver,The UWP has no moral authority to talk on this issue. Your premise seems to accept the opinion of the UWP that the overseas votes are now illegal. That has never been the position of the DLP that is why they never challenged it. As a matter of fact there are court decisions which support the position of the DLP.

Remember voting is a right not a preveledge, that is one of the reasons why the proper process of law has to be followed before a name can be removed from the voters list. People have deid for the right to vote. The UWP is now placing itself on the wrong side of history together with our former colonial and slave masters. The actions of the UWP seeks to take us back to the days when only the landed class were allowed to vote.

Mr. Linton, please stain on tract! Your inspiring messages have created a lot of dent, fear, panic and desperation in the DLP camp. Please continue to give hope to Dominicans and forget about going to the airport on Wednesday. I know you did not call on us to do anything at the airport on Wednesday except to come and welcome our brothers and sisters that will be coming to vote. However, with Skerrit and his dlp so desperate and wicked, DO NOT give them any opportunity to plot evil and try to blame it on UWP. It is common for dictators to shoot people and blame the opposition for that. Please DO NOT put yourself in harms way because Dominicans are depending on you to rescue them come Dec. 9, 2014. Let Arthie and others continue to do the good job they have been doing. The message is going out and people are taking heed. Let’s be wise and give NO place to the devil. Dominica needs you and team Dominica.

I live in the Diaspora and I am truly concerned that the UWP would go to such lengths to prevent or put obstacles to prevent or disenfranchised me in any way from exercising my constitutional right to vote. As far as I am concerned it is the responsibility of the government /party in power to implement measures to make it easier for all of its citizens to vote! I see any hassle at the airport of D/cans coming in to exercise this right as criminal and I am hoping that it will be treated as such by law enforcement authority!

When a government fails to up hold fairness, equality, and justice, the people who are experiencing this injustice must let their voices heard be it by civilized protest or exercising their civil disobedience. When the people have asked time and time again to clean the voters list long before elections, Skerrit turned a deaf ear. We are entering an election with a bloated list which has more people names on it than the population of Dominica according to the last census which was taken.
How can this be fair? Persons living overseas for the last five years, their names should have been deleted from the list according to the election laws. One may ask why wasn’t this done? Skerrit said the state could not afford electoral reform Dominica did not have money to do so. But he could get millions to bring down destra, carimi, donnie Macklukin, Alison Hines, Morgan heritage, sewo sewo sewo on an eve of an election. This is clear wickedness and dictatorship! Are we Dominican going to stand for such malice?

    LABORITES MISSING THE POINT…AGAIN!!!

The issue here is a simple one. It is not about the Labor Party facilitating the travel of any or all Constitutionally eligible voters to return home to cast their ballots. Rather, it is about facilitating the travel of ILLEGAL voters plus the provision of spending cash for voters to cast their ballots (most of which are illegal under Dominican Law) for a SPECIFIC Political Party. In this case the Dominica Labor Party.
This issue involves two components. 1, Enticing voters ANYWHERE to vote for your party with offers of money, gifts, personal promises and expenses paid is an act of BRIBERY! This is not only unlawful but it is inherently wrong in any Democracy. 2, Promoting or facilitating ANYONE in committing an act which is illegal under the current laws of the land is a CRIME!!!! If under the law one is not eligible to vote due to residency requirements, he/she would be committing a crime to knowingly cast a ballot.
The United Workers Party, Team Dominica is not against legal voters in the diaspora exercising their legal right to vote. They are concerned about Diaspora Dominicans being bribed and facilitated to commit an illegal act in an effort to tip the elections in a direction that is not favorable to a majority of the Dominicans here at home. It is basic common sense that these Diaspora Dominicans are not the ones that will face the impact of their votes.
It is, therefore, essentially important that patriotic Dominicans who want to see a fair and just election this year come out in their numbers to speak out and stand up against any attempts to circumvent and frustrate the will of the majority. Dominica is a democratic nation and WE THE PEOPLE must insure that it remains that way. Thank You. God Bless You and God Bless Dominica!!!!

It would be nice it you could reference the part of the Dominican law that states its illegal. That way, I could make a more informed decision.
When the UWP facilitated travel for outside Dominicans in 2000, what was your opinion then? Was it legal?

      Trubblesome

That’s the “trubble” with us. You are citing a law and interpreting it as you wish. I am looking at the same law and agreeing with you that “enticing voters ANYWHERE to vote for your party with offers of money etc. is an act of bribery”. What would you call the action by the political party UWP which is not the employer of public and police officers offering them money, not on a campaign platform which it is entitled to do but in a meeting with their bargaining units, initiated by the party called specifically to discuss that act of bribery? this is unprecedented except by the same UWP one or two elections ago when they signed a document with the Public service Union with what intention I don’t know.

Just as there are rumours that the DLP is arranging for tickets for Dominicans living abroad to come in, there are also rumours that the UWP is secretly doing the same at more shame to them because of their hypocritical public accusation of the DLP for doing it, if they are in fact doing it.

Last time I checked, intimidation of voters is also a breach of the election laws, so when you ask your supporters to go in large numbers to the airport to greet Dominicans who are coming to their country of birth because you have something to say to them, what are you asking your supporters to do? What if those returning do not want to hear what they have to say which is their democratic right, what will be the next course of action?

How has the action you are calling for suddenly become a safe thing to do when the naming of the airport, an officially organised event was supposed to have put people at risk in the car park where they were, due to landing planes etc., Hatten Garden road would have been risky and a hazard, but it is now lawful and safe for a mob to travel to the airport to confront their brothers and sisters to force their opinions on them. So what happened to the strategy to intimidate them by reporting them to the IRS and the State Department?

You know, I try to dissuade people when I hear them say that this new style of intimidatory politics was introduced and has been perpetuated by the UWP but honestly that party keeps proving them right. The problem which I now have in trying to look at the UWP as a lesser evil than the evil which they tell me we have presently, is their brazeness and boldfaceness. Don’t you dare do it , I alone have the right to do it!
Just remember Ron Green( a gentleman I quite like but fair is fair) having contested elections and served as a Minister for 4 years while he was an American citizen and then himself, not even someone else, (himself), taking Petter St. Jean to court, allegedly for the same offence. Talk about no face bold faceness? Remember this is the option you are asking Dominicans to switch with the agreed imperfect one we now have! Think about it, if you are an analytical, sensible voter who has refused to be drawn into the mob hatred of the ruling party which has been built up over the years to a crescendo within a percentage of the population by the one sided talk shows what would you do?

  30. oh ho
    December 1, 2014

I find it very strange that Linton wants to prevent Dominican abroad from coming to the country to vote. I remembered very clearly that when UWP team was touring round the world he told these same Dominicans that when and if he wins that he will put a program in place that persons will be able to stay out of the country and vote. It appears like an “absentee ballot”. What is the difference? Linton if there a problem, you report it to the authority. The atmosphere in the country is very tense, we don’t need more fuel to make matters worst. Persons are already receiving threatening message from other persons. Recently, some persons have told one of my relative that if UWP ever lose on the 8th of December that he will be the first one they will put down. I want to send a message to them; COME GOOD; we are waiting and we are not afraid. Persons need to learn to respect each other. We have our democratic right to vote for whoever we want.

    • Tragic
      December 1, 2014

It isn’t Linton trying to prevent anything. It is your ELECTORAL COMMISSION, POLICE FORCE and DOMINICA LABOR PARTY that are refusing to follow the painfully clear laws on our Constitution! Remember that document? That piece of paper that sets all the laws of our land? Linton didn’t write it. We all are obligated to follow it. That constitution tells you when you are no longer allowed to vote. If you want to change it talk to the DLP who had 18 seats over the last 4.5 years and could have changed the law. Instead they want you to BREAK the law and feel good about it. Once you start breaking laws, when will it stop?

If your friend received a threat, then you should report it to the Police. But guess what? Nothing will happen b/c our institutions are weak and paralyzed. Linton reported bribery to the police, it is being done left, right and center, but have they investigated, done anything NO! They only report to one man it seems. How can a nation operate like this?? We DEMAND a law-abiding nation, and it starts by following the laws in our constitution. Once we start treating our OPINION as laws, we will have chaos. This is not a Linton issue…this is citizen of Dominica issue. Enough is Enough!

  31. December 1, 2014

Mr ..Linton you have 8 days to convince those Dominicans that are coming down why they should vote for TEAM DOMINICA UWP Party keep bringing the message and let the others hammer them on the illegal act they will be doing you have told them some of them I’m sure have change their minds so focus on that message moving forward.

    • Police State?
      December 1, 2014

There is absolutely nothing that the police can do based on what the UWP is saying. If the UWP has information of bribery they should give it to the police so that it can be investigated. THE POLICE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO QUESTION ANYONE ABOUT THEIR POLITICS AS TO WHO THEY INTEND TO VOTE FOR OR IF THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO VOTE. Once your name is on the list you are qualified to vote it is as simple as that. Unfortunately what the UWP is advocating is the creation of a POLICE STATE where the police can arrest anyone they suspect of bribery or illegal voting based on the dictates their political masters… DOMINICANS MUST NOW BE FEARFULL forget about FEAR NO MORE. The party that once told you to fear no more is now the party that we should be fearfull of, HOW IRONIC!!

  33. November 30, 2014

I have been back in Dominica a few years now and prior to being home I follow the all forms of media in Dominica, particularly the political talk shows. As a young Dominican I am concern about the 24hrs 365 days cycle of politics that seem to soak our people time like a sponge. I am concern that a lot of people do not and might not know how to accept defeat in Dominican politics. I am concern about the lack of decisive interest by the churches to take a role as healer in our nation and to bring all parties together to see the big picture “DOMINICA”. I am so tired of this constant fighting words on talk radio that it’s frightening now to even keep a conversation anywhere for fear of being victimized. I am tiered of people keeping Dominicans poor and ignorant to their true intensions such as to use us for political gains then spit us out after use. I ask every Dominican like myself to demand of our leaders respect and formulation of laws that will limit our risk as a people to harm as Wednesday can potentially become a hazardous day. I find it so easy as in the US Army Presidents and politicians send young men and women to war as in Irac to fight a war based on the wrong thing aka (WMD) which were never found.

    November 30, 2014

Lennox Linton, now i see what the PM is talking about .You are really a sick and violent man. How can yu accusee the prime minister of bringing in people illegally to vote ?
May i remind you that we are born Dominicans just like you Linton. we have a right to pay and come to Dominica on elections time and vote if wed want or just visit our land.

I am sick and tried of you. Frankly if you were not the leader of the UWP maybe the party would stand a chance. After you all loose crawl back in your hole and let Joshua or Monell run the show.

Stop encouraging violence in the country Lennox, the labour party is not preaching violence , while it iis blue preaching hate and lies and division.

For God’s sake it is just a dam elections it will come again in another five years. Go love people and come again.

Use you real name your coward! Your PM is afraid of Mr. Lennox Linton because he is a chicken not even a chicken but a damn turkey. He is hiding behinds his followers. A set of people who can not think for themselves and make independent decisions.
We don’t want a man for our PM who destroys everything and anything. We want a no face bold face leader who stand up for our right and ready to work to develope our country. All who do not Mr. Lennox Linton for Prime Minister that is their Damn Business but some of us wants him. Now take that to the Bank.

You should be ashamed of yourself! If you call yourself Dominican, you should understand how this country came into being and all the suffering that took place under the non-democratic systems imposed upon the peoples of this land.

All Dominicans are asking for is a clean voters list, as our Constitution dictates! Are we that low, that we can’t ask for our lawmakers to follow the law?? If you respected your ancestors and know how much this “dam elections” is worth, you would not waste your time pointing fingers at Lennox. You would call on the Electoral Commission to do its job, the Police force to stop the blatant bribery and allow these “dam elections” to take place as designed, and as our constitution dictates.

My friend, here we go again, Lennox Linton, has told party supporters that they need to stay tuned for they will “soon be receiving calls for action.” Can we elect a person with such a low mentality to be our leader? these are the words of a cult leader. The man is uneducated so he doesn’t know any better.

If i was Mr.Linton I would leave that alone. I think they will win the election no matter what labour does and how many people they bring in. I truely think Labour will be getting the shock of their lives. Forget and that airport thing on Wednesday please mr.Linton.

    November 30, 2014

before we quote the wrong thing my question to Mr. Linton is what exactly does he mean by stay tuned for Calls to Action. I would love for him to explain just what that means cause it is bordering on inciting violence if you ask me. I would not want to see anyone inciting violence during this election cause at the end of the day violence brings no benefits to them. a man who has done his work should be confident that he will prosper. five years is enough time to prepare………..

It is important to get the numbers of diaspora voters who are coming in and to which locations they are voting so that when the results are announced Lennox can determine whether these votes gave the DLP any edge. Otherwise, we will never settle down as a country and get back to some sort of normalcy, meaning that Dominica will always be on continuous dose of elections viagra.

The majority of people want elections campaigning to come and go and do not want to be in a constant state of campaigning, day in day out for anotherfive years. LET THE DEMOCRATIC BALLOT PROCESS WORK AND LEARN TO RESPECT IT FOR ONCE, MAN!

It is lawful for people to come home to vote. It is lawful to protect them, they should not be needing protection. preventing people from voting is called intimidation, and that is unlawful. However anyone who as not been residing in Dominica for the past 5yrs can be reported to the authority. Do not break the laws, do not intimidate people, If it is for you no man can steal your joy.

    • Methusala
      November 30, 2014

Intimidation is illegal, so to is bribery, so too is the knowledgeable violations of a sovereign country’s laws.
If the law states that if a citizen resides outside of the country for more than 5 years their names should be removed from the electors list and for that person to vote in any election after that 5 year period he/she should return to the country and reside in the constituency for a period of 6 months to be duly registered and vote, why violate that law.
No one is not saying that you all should not vote. If you want to vote, return to the country and stay 6 months and register and vote and all will be well. Experience first hand the environment and how it operates. That is all, That is all, That is all.

Thanks DNO for your explanation and modification. We all know what Lennox said but we also understand the political atmosphere here and therefore we should be very careful not to add any word that our brother did not say as most readers build their blogs by just reading the headline instead of what was said. When I think of what Lennox said “We are being provoked. But we will show restraint…we will through this, we will get through this. We are going to be watching very closely and we will be insisting in large numbers that right is done by Dominica,” I feel in the interest of good reporting a headline such as ‘Linton asks supporters to stay calm in the midst of provocation’ would better represent the truth.

Mr. Linton, we are very close to the prize and we cannot allow ourselves to get distracted by Skerrit and his apostles. Dominicans are very hungry and eager for change because they know and remember what they experienced the last five years. Also, lets concentrate on the message of deliverance that has been reaching those who live in Dominica as well as those that are coming on the Skerrit / DLP chattered flight. Many of them I know are taking the ride to come vote him out. Yes we need to defend our democracy but let’s be very careful with our utterances as you know the media is very good at adding words you did not say and take things out of context to make the UWP look bad. As a born again believer myself and one who has sat in many services that Peter R ministered in, I can tell you that Peter R has already lost his anointing and Linton had nothing to do with that. 2. Concerning the bishop, he as well as other spiritual leaders have not represented the office of God in a manner that pleases God. and shame on him for putting himself in a position where people have to refer to him as blood sucker. He has brought shame to his once respected office. 3. I challenge you to give evidence of where and where Lennox Linton ever referred to the bishop as blood sucker. 4. In like manner, I also challenge you to point out where in this statement Lennox attacked the police. FYI, Lennox has the support of over 50@ of the police so stop your nonsense!

      Silver bird

You people seem to think that democracy is for one group of Dominicans? You all think democracy is under threat now, just watch and wait! All the frightening signs are there!

The police cannot interfere with anybody who has come home to vote. The same way that Arthie had a list of people he claims were coming down to vote why didn’t he follow what the law requires and inform the electoral office of the people who had not been to Dominica within the last five years and give them the proof along with his legal objection so that their names could be removed from the list. That is our law, silver bird and that is how people’s names can be removed. He should also make all the UWP team investigate dead people, get the proof and bring to the electoral office to have their names removed.

Silver Bird, tell me how they are going to vote illegally when the list has to be checked at the polling station where agents of both parties will be present with their own lists to verify each voter and indelible ink is going to be placed on their fingers after they vote. How are they going to vote illegally. Stop belching out the propaganda which is fed to you people daily for the benefit of those who feed it to you.

Make sure you go out yourself and vote for the party of your choice! That’s your democratic right

For Pete’s sake stop spreading wrong information.

  56. Reminisce
    November 30, 2014

That will be the down fall of the UWP. Stop focusing so much on these alleged foreigners coming down to vote. Instead, focus on convincing people that you are the right party to replace the current administration. If you spend more time focusing on the facts and the things you have planned for the people of Dominica and the reasons why your party is the best party then the handful of people that are coming down to vote should not be such a huge impact that leads to your ultimate demise.

In comparison to other years, I believe the UWP is ready more than ever before but Lennox I don’t want to read over and over again about bribery, that,s an old story. Every political party does it and if you are successful at the polls, you will do it at the next election.

If you have (in the years that you had to prepare) and are still campaigning to convince the people about voting for your party and you feel satisfied that you have and are doing a good job, then FEAR NOT!!!! STOP THE BRIBERY TALK . STOP quoting Acts ad Legislation, talking about what is criminal and police protection. People are fed up of hearing that.

DO THE MATH! – Skerrit cannot bring down every Dominican abroad, the majority of the people are still in Dominica, these are the people that you needed to spend time convincing. If you have done that, then the handful of people coming down should not matter.

It is reasoned comments like yours which can help sensible people to think objectively and make right decisions. I fail to understand such a reckless approach one week before the elections. The manner and purpose of the application of a leader’s influence/power over followers before entry into government is a good indicator of the nature of governance that we can expect. Are the indicators for those currently aspiring good or bad? That is the question!

    • Disgusting
      December 1, 2014

So in other words…Lennox should keep talking..Dominicans should watch bribery taking place, see laws being broken, stay silent at an Electoral Commission that isn’t doing their job and just chill.

Nation of fools! You refuse to stand up for your most basic right and then wonder why things so hard in this country. Go steal a mango and see how swiftly the laws of the land are used against you. But our electoral laws shouldn’t matter. It saddens me to say this, but this sort of “weak/accept anything” attitude is why our people have and continue to endure so much oppression from any and every one.

Lennox has called for a peaceful protest. He has educated enough. It is time Dominicans of all sorts begin to start holding their institutions and elected officials accountable. We cannot progress by turning a blind eye to all abuse of law, all for what? Because of allegiance to a political party?
