New senator looks forward to serving

Registe was appointed DLP senator
Registe was appointed DLP senator

Newly appointed Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Senator, Edward Registe, said being called to the post came as a surprise and he looks forward to serving the people of Dominica.

“It’s not something that I looked forward to at all, however if you are called to serve, I guess you have to,” he said.

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced on the weekend that Registe, who is also the general secretary of DLP, has been appointed as senator on the government side in the House of Assembly.

Registe stated that he looks forward to serving the people of Dominica and to help promote the ideals of the DLP.

Additionally, he said, he will strive to ensure that the work the prime minister and the DLP have begun, continue in earnest.

“I believe that our country is ready for a wonderful take off,” Registe said. “We have a number of programs and policies that we have begun and I look forward to the next five years and to making my contribution to the House and otherwise.”

He stated that he would like to see the introduction of Creole in Parliament as well as the continuation of the government’s social programs.

“I am a firm believer in our social programs and in raising people from poverty and ensuring that people can move forward,” he said. “I also want us to look at various programs that will improve on the justice system of our country and to ensure that the public service to our country and others can really see better days.”

He added that the government has worked hard in terms of its policies and programs but there is room for improvement.

“I look forward to contributing to that,” Registe said.

but they promised Marigot a Ministerial position – so what happen Dr. Christmas couldn’t have been made a senator and then Minister of something – maybe Northern Affiars – the way it looks 18 can always become 19. Just want to know if Skerrit had won 21 seats would we have ended up with 25 ministers? I mean I have never come across such blatant misfits and wastage in my study of government systems.

What nonsense is that? We do not have creole in Schools but you want it in parliament? Not everyone in Dominica speaks creole. So what’s up with this nonsense? Yes it is part of our culture but not for all. If you are speaking creole in parliament then many students will not understand what is going on. There are also parliamentarians who do not speak creole, so is that a new strategy? If you want creole in parliament in the future, let us start with teaching it in school.

I wish you had added transparency and accountability to the list of things that you were looking forward to; but a continuation of the policies of Deception Lies and Propaganda is counter-productive to the development and economic growth of Dominica.

I think that the parliamentarians should put their hearts and mind together and let Skerritt know he cant dictate to them. He needs to allow each one to have a say in discussing matter s pertaining to Dominica. We voted for the Parliamentarians to represent us so he has to allow them to make their contribution. And please parl reps dont be afraid to call wrong , wrong and right right.Skerritt cannot fire those who the electorate voted so stand strong against corruption and fight for justice in Dominica. We will be listening to you all.

“I believe that our country is ready for a wonderful take off,” Registe said.

All I along I knew something was wrong, what I don’t understand is why so many people not seeing it. Why did the DLP need 15 years to prepare for a take off? 15 years???? UWP took off developing infrastructure immediately after winning the election, dont talk about how Mamo took off from the early 80’s…. 15 years after coming into office the DLP government is ready for a wonderful take off.

Meantime the country preparing for take off, the majority of the ministers soaring high….. villas, houses, jetty, who said they leaving with their hands in their pocket…. SMH!

“I believe that our country is ready for a wonderful take off,” Boy look magiiii wii and I am confused. 10 years ago we were suppose to head for the next level and only now we ready for take off. So I guess Labor te ca twavaille on fixing tires and getting money for gas. Although plenty money in Cayman Islands Dominica still didn’t have money to buy gas so that we could rive unto the platform of next level where would take off.
Allas some of thee money end up in Barbados too.

Anyway Registe you can take off if you want on your plane with no gas but I waiting for the farmers boat for me to get to the next level at least if it run out of gas I can swim. Besides that I doh diplomatic passport like the money launderer in new Jersey by way of Lagoon Portsmouth.

Hello and good afternoon my people. I will be the first to say that I don’t fully understand how the Political System works in Dominica. I know that Mr Registe didn’t run and win in the election so why is he being call a Senator. Based on the article he’s being appointed to this position because he is a member of the DLP and a supporter of the Prime Minister which is fine but don’t call him a Senator rather he’s a Political Appointee. If a wrong please educate me.

so check out what the dictionary say about the Senate lol take special attention to the last word:

        senate |ˈsɛnɪt|
        noun
2 the state council of the ancient Roman republic and empire, which shared legislative power with the popular assemblies, administration with the magistrates, and judicial power with the knights.

well the constitution makes provision for the prime minister to recommend 5 people to the president for appointment as senators to parliament .likewise the leader of the opposition nominates 4 people . once they are duly nominated and appointed then they are senators of parliament.

      • December 18, 2014

Additionally, he said, “he will strive to ensure work the prime minister and the DLP have begun, continue in earnest.” What exactly is the work that the DLP and Skerrit has begun in earnest? Is it the dismantling of the constitution? Is it the contamination of the courts, so that no law or no constitution can prevent the prime minister from doing whatever he feels?

This is the exact thing that is wrong with Dominica and these Skerrit politicians. Everyone wants to work in earnest to continue the work of the Labour Party and no one wants to work honestly for the benefit and the betterment of Dominica.

Like Skerrit, this new senator believes in Social Programs. No one believes in creating jobs in the private sector so that anyone who wants to work can work and elevate his social standing. The DLP believes that the government should create all the jobs so the people can depend on it for employment favors.

However, any society where the government employs most of its citizens is a failing society. Government should never the creator of jobs but it should create the atmosphere for jobs to be created. The DLP has an agenda and it is working for them but it is not working for Dominica. While all modern economic structures are quickly dismantling their social programs, including China, Dominica is quickly going in the opposite direction.

During the most recent election campaign, I said that new thinking was needed to move Dominica forward. I am more convinced today that for the next five years it will be economic stagnation as usual. We are going to witness more dependency on government handouts and less direct foreign investments. Without direct foreign investments, the standard of living in Dominica will be lowered even further,
