Parliament missing something, but House Speaker relieved

Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd Knights says the absence of the elected United Workers Party members from Parliament has affected what parliament is really about.

The elected members of the UWP have missed two consecutive sittings of the House of Assembly, following the December 18, 2009 general elections, alleging there was bribery and fraud.

Boyde Knight told an interview with the Government Press Secretary Sean Douglas that Parliament is supposed to comprise of the  government and opposition.

“You cannot have everybody agreeing to everything like it is now. You need the interjection of another idea and that is not there,” she said.

She admitted however that the absence of the Opposition members has comforted her in a sense.

“I would be telling a lie if I haven’t said that life in parliament has not been a dream the last two sessions. Right now it’s just a case of things moving quickly,” she said.

Parliament will reconvene for the third time in the year on April 29.

    Greetings all,

In Antigua a Judge ruled that the rersults of three seats held by the ruling party were null and void. The PM appealed and the country’s business goes on until the LAW takes its course. In DOMINICA however, the UWP and its supporters cannot seem to get that. If you have a matter before a Court of Law you have to await a ruling, taking action that compromises your country’s democracy is, in my humble view, an act of desrespect to your Laws and supporters and a sign of incompetent and bankrupt leadership. How can you expect a country to be placed on halt while you go about disrespecting the very constitution you claim to love and how can you expect to get into power merely on allegations for which you declared you had no proof. This is my question to your UWP family; If you claim that Jack is the owner of a chair, you must have seen some document that allowed you to make that statement. Jack says that he does not own that chair. Maybe Jack is a liar? BUT, you are the one who alleges, thus, the onus is on you to present your proof to find Jack guilty. You make a ton of allegations, you file matters before the Court, allow the Court to act, go to work, you disrespect the People’s National Parliament and convene your own pirate version. Tell me, how can I support this?? The Constitution creates one Parliament yet you establish another and call it the People’s Parliament. Finally, you talk about One Party State, DLP does not need that. 18-3 is fine, but you the UWP are playiong that card, as a political strategy to seek sympathy from the electorate. This move is the best joke on news all around the world. As you so eloquently put it Edo,whatever plans the DLP has it can execute these plans with the 18-3 we do not need the 3 that you hold we already have the required majority 2/3. The UWP participated in a process it claimed was compromised hoping to win that compromised process. The UWP if it had any intergrity should NOT have contested the 2009 General Elections. Thie is sour grapes! You claim not to accept the results of the General Elections then you need to resign as your three seats form part of the very results you do not accept. We had one Electoral Process and if it was flawed then you should remove yourselves entirely from that arena, not only staying out of Parliament. How can you exist as part of a thing that you do not recognise? I am puzzled please help me. What office do you three gentlemen hold? Just for my knowledge. PEACE.

I will alway say that those in power in DOMINICA will always keep some of us under their spell because we just refuse to think for ourselves, one way to keep people beholding to oneself is to keep feeding them lies and we keep believing it without checking for ourselves and that is dictatorship now we all have to suffer for it. Another thing do you see the elites of the DLP out there making a fool of themselves only those with less knowledge and intelligent does.
Alex is not the person the Government should make as speaker of the house just listen to her interview how can you be relieved the Opposition especially the UWP is not in the House how tacky but we are speaking about a women who believes she is above the Law.
I just cant waite to see what the COURT decision will be she ma be speak to quickly.
And DOMINICAN ask yourself this question what is it that the GOVERNMENT of DOMINICA would like to do that they cannot do now so why they need the OPPOSITION in the House?

  7. April 22, 2010

IT is irony that the UWP is charging the Labour party for bribery and coruption this time arround now that they have lost the election, when last General election they giving tickets to Dominica National overseas to come add vote including my self .

unfortunately i had not travel to use the ticket so i had it to keep and eventually throw it away, otherwise i would come and testify on behalf of the labour party that the UWP gave ticket as well. it is bribery when you lost , but what would it be had you won?

the speaker of the house is supposed to be impartial to maintain a sense of balance. she clearly supports the government. this woman … I am ashamed of what we call democracy in this country… a bunch of …. people are running the place and the poor people do not have a clue what is going on. They can sell dominica and the people would not know anything about it… they can raise their salaries, yet firefighters and their families cannot get proper insurance…they can uproot themselves and their families and move to another country if dominica becomes a failed state while our poor people will have no choice but to stay and face the hardships…we need to wake up as a people man…we need to get involved in our country.be sensible like the bajans . they don’t joke…if anyone is playing the fool, they get rid of them…PERIOD…

  13. April 22, 2010

The Speaker of the House of Assembly will one day know and understand what real DEMOCRACY is all about. She is a burning shame to her nation.

I understand where the opposition and the people supporting their actions are coming from, but I do not agree with them. The least that should be done is to sit in The House so that at least the documents presented will be available to them. Unless these documents are made available anyway. If not, they should at least sit in even if they choose not to take part in the voting selection.
