PM pleased with Obama’s victory

US President Obama and Prime Minister Skerrit in conversation during the Summit of the Americas in April this year

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said he is pleased with the victory of Barack Obama in the US presidential elections.

Obama defeated his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, on Tuesday and secured a second term in the White House.

Following Obama’s victory, Prime Minister Skerrit lauded the relationship between Dominica and the United States of America and his relationship with President Barack Obama.

In a release, the Prime Minister said he was “very pleased with the outcome of the election.”

“We have always enjoyed a close relationship with the United States of America and President Obama is a true friend. I have discussed our development plans with him on several occasions and he has always been cordial and attentive,” Skerrit said.

He expressed his desire to strengthen relations with the United States noting that “US foreign policy is increasingly focused on anti-terrorism activities and dealing with global hot-spots rather than developmental issues, particularly those of the Caribbean and Latin American, hopefully this will improve going forward.”

As is customary, an official congratulatory message will be sent to President Obama on behalf of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

To those idiots who think Skerrit should not affiliate with Venezuela or Cuba or China and that he should just stick with the U.S.A…..Why??? Yes they are communist countries. But how do you explain Americas relationship with China? Mind you China is more extreme than the other two yet America owes China so much money they cannot repay. America does more business with China than any other country and guess what they need China. If Skerrit is getting roads built or airport renovated or hotels built or whatever and he’s getting it from Chavez I don’t care. At least he’s getting things done. Give Skerrit a damn break!!

You are probably gathering crumbs from under Skerrit’s table, or maybe you are one of the lazy sluggards crawling to the Red Clinic. Fact is you cannot neglect agriculture, or kill agriculture, waste the same China money on State Evil, refuse to employ your own people on these projects, and yet still you are there stuttering rubbish about Skerrit. He is a total failure, with his inept and reckless leadership that has resulted in this once flourishing country to be so poor today. All the other OECS countries has surpassed us in terms of economic prosperity for their people, and you are still there like a TERRE BERRE SPECING CRAP ABOUT SKERRIT.

It’s amazing the amount of inside information that some Dominicans have access to. They can even tell us about US foreign policy.

I think those so-called-professed intellects are allowing their expertise to go to waste.

Really, it would be more productive to find ways to work with the DLP government to improve conditions in Dominica.

Dominica is a small country, we have to realize that America knows everything about every country in the world. Cuba, Venezuela and China are Communist countries. I don’t know why little Domincan should affiliate with these countries and want America to help them. Even though Obama is black, America dont’t mess with Communits. Why do you think American Eagle is pulling out of the Caribbean especially Dominica. We know they are going bank-rupt, but this is not the only reason America is pulling out. Ross Univeristy, if our Government have Communist mentality, they will get another Caribbean Island to put their school and Dominica is really going to sink. Even though we might not like America, but it is still the Eathly Super Power. We need from them, they do not need from us. So we have to watch our backs, and do not forget we are on their Black List. America is, all the states come together, thats why it is called the United States of America. We cannot hate a country and want them to help us. Remember – America is made of human beings, and if someone does’t like me, why should I feed them. (COMMON SENSE). DOMINICA- pay attention to World Politics. LOVE.

American eagle pulling out of Dominica because of what now? ROTFL. I swear give ppl a keyboard and an audience… Keep on making me laugh. You are clearly misinformed (subject to clarify for word). American Eagle/American airlines are experiencing financial woes right now you said it. THATS the reason that they’re pulling out of non-profitable routes (PUERTO RICO I.E connecting flights to Dominica).. This has nothing to do with SKERRIT or OBAMA, or Even Dominica. Apparently you haven’t been paying attention to world politics or even history for that matter.. America owes trillions of dollars in debt to what? A COMMUNIST COUNTRY.. Thats politics, you scratch my back I scratch yours. You live in the U.S, yet you still have the Dominican mindset of politics. smh JustMy2Cents

I applaud the prime Minister’s effort in showering praises and congratulatory messages on the US president. I just hope he is doing so sincerely and not simply to blunt recent criticism of the state of relations between Dominica and the US, given Mr. Skerritt’s membership in Alba which has ties to Iran.
I see our prime minister understands the value of public diplomacy. By disclosing his communication with President Obama, Mr. Skerrit hopes to bolster his own image among Dominicans with Americaqn citizenshipn not to mention presenting a more moderate image domestically, especially among those who are growing increasingly queasy about his leftward lurch, even if they may be too shy to say so puiblicly.
So part of Mr. Skerrit public relations stunt, is just that: A stunt.
It would be considerably more meaningful for the prime minister to apologize to the US for the embarrassment caused over the recent USAID flap in addition to placating fears in Washington over the direction of Dominica’s foreign policy especially in relation to ALBA and connections with IRAN.

  15. November 7, 2012

“What is Obama telling him”?–That is the question of a commentator below. I imagine that the “him” refers to our PM–Rosevelt Skerrit.

Well today I heard President Barack Obama refer to his Nation as a “family”. And he said that American was not “built on what is done for us, but what is done by us together” And I witnessed the massive number of Americans who loudly applauded those words of their President. If those are the kinds of words that Mr. Obama speaks to our Prime Minister, it is obvious that he is speaking the words of truth and good principles to him.

The question is, do we Dominicans understand this “principle” of working together as one big family for the benifit of all? I do not think so! For if we did, we would know also, that we all are responsible for both–the success or the failure in our Dominica.

The truth is that we Dominicans maintain a lazy mentality; as the majority of us simply sit around, but behaving like loud clanging cymbals, as we put the blame for every bad outcome on the government–mainly our Prime Minister.

But the Prime Minister is only “one” man; therefore, without our support–including those men and women who work with him–there is only so much he can do.

Now let us remember this principle which says: The development of Dominica does not happen by what is done for us, but what is done by us, together, in harmony and tranquility–like the work of “one great big family”.

    • Frenz
      November 8, 2012

Liz Dominicans were never lazy people. We were once a hard working and productive people but since Skerrit and the Labor Party our people have become disenfranchised , reduced to begars and red clinic patients. That is a fact. It is not because the people dont want to work but simply because (1) chinese have taken the jobs that would make people independent; chinese merchants through some secrete preferential treatment arrangement have destroyed our small businesses; your Skerrit government has admitted to deliberately destroying the agriculture industry; The Skerrit government has imposed poverty VAT measures that destroy private investment interest and small businesses. A major obstacle to economic growth is corruption and that there is a plethora of corruption in Dominica.
Liz if you must be a true christian please rid yourself of biasnesses and call a spade a spade. Why pretend that you are concerned about Dominica when you remain mute or avoid speaking about and against the ills of this corrupt and inefficient administration. Your behavior and attitude is exactly what jesus disliked.

I am not religous but you would get my respect if you would just stop being a hypocrite and be honest with yourself and others. How do you pray at night when all you have done is try to spin the truth or not talk against blatant corruption and misconduct in the government and party that you support.

Would you rally behind a pastor or priest that tells lies; hides behind a character such as a unethical and deceitful lawyer; would you rally behind a leader who blatantly show disrespect for the law; would you rally behind a leader who within a short space of time could own multimillion dollar villas, lie about the cost of his dwelling house; conive with questinable characters like Corrello ,lapseng and others? Would you rally behind a leader who refuse to disclose a MOU signed on my and your behalf?
When you get on your knees and pray Liz4Jesus ask jesus whether or not he would have spoken out against such behavior by those who claim to be working for the people and claiming that god is good whereas the good things seem to be happening to the leader and his cronies only.
I also hope you pray for a clear conscience .

      • November 9, 2012

        @Frenz

Whoever you are, well I see that you needed to release the frustration of your existence–because you cannot have your own way– off your chest, but why use my comment and my relationship with God to empty your foolishness off your mind–because that is all it is?

You claimed that you are not religious–I am not in religion either–but I have the feeling you are talking about your non involvement with God, which is what most people like you classify as religion–not so anyway–so what the hell do you know about what Jesus likes and dislikes!

Well the Word of God tells us that our reigning Government is God appointed–see that at Romans 13: 1-6. My duty as a Christian is allow God to deal with His appointed person, who is my leader I have no right to interfere with God’s work. I spoke about the habit of my people of Dominica.

So no thanks to the kind of mentality which you are displaying here–I could never be that the kind of person you seem to be–besides I do not have a clue of what you are talking about.

There is a saying that one man’s poison is another man’s food–if you are not happy with the government of Dominica, that does not mean I have to join in with you, okay!

And one more thing! Keep your judgments to yourself–I am not answerable to you. You have no right to speak to me the way you did above

And if you are not the same as the pastor who hides behind certain character and tell lies, why are you hiding behind a strange name here. You seem to know me well but I have no idea who you are–how are you different from the other LIARS?

This result should send a message to the UWP. While the voters agree that the economy is their number one problem, they still voted for Obama; leaving many to suggest he won based on likability, not on policy.

Things “may” be bad in Dominica, but the PM’s likability can’t be compared to any other politician in Dominica today. UWP “may” have the best policies, best plan for the country (may); but people vote people, not policies, not plans.

I know the party and their supporters will dismiss this comment as utter rubbish, but then again that will explain why they will remain in opposition.

The present labor party is made up of the Cream of the defunct freedom party who have had a longstanding relationship with the conservative republicans, ask parry Bellot(who publicly maintain his republican status)

Dominica has received nothing but praise from the current US Ambassador (appointed by President Obama) a career diplomat.

The previous ambassador, who spoke badly of Dominica, was a political appointee of the disastrous Bush administration and she had her own issues – she was an embarrassment to the USA!

It is a fact, our Prime Minister has met with President Obama on several occasions.

Since Obama hasn’t visited Dominica in person I think it is safe to say his impression of the Nature Isle is based on his “friendship” with Skerrit.

        November 7, 2012

“Prime Minister has met with President Obama on several occasions..” WHEN? HOW MANY TIMES? that is so easily verifiable by visiting the state Dept Website but you will state a boldface lie for attention won’t you?

Oh so no Skerrit and Obama have friendship, child please! have a couple of seats some place remote. Obama maybe know more about Dominica than Skerrit himself since he was a keen student of international diplomacy. You all can manufacture all what you want, the two men have NOTHING in common when it comes to leadership and values!
