Political Leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), Roosevelt Skerrit, has urged voters in the United Workers Party (UWP) strong hold of Marigot to make a choice of having a lone voice on the opposition side, or having a representative who, if elected, will be a minister of government.
Skerrit told a rally to elect the DLP candidate for Marigot Dr. Martin Christmas last night that in the past the people in Marigot had argued that the DLP was not sending them “serious” candidates who were worthy of their votes, since they were not likely to get “cabinet positions” if elected.
“As leader of the DLP I did not quarrel, I did not fret,” he said. “As your humble servant, I resumed my search and we identified, not a plumber, not a gardener, not a clerical officer, or even a famer. We have brought to you in this election a medical doctor, a doctor whom you know and trust. A doctor who cares for the people of Marigot.”
He said the people cannot say the DLP is not serious about Marigot.
“I am saying tonight that Dr. Christmas is cabinet material,” Skerrit said. “And I go further, as the political leader of the DLP and its likely prime minister after the December 8th 2014 elections, to say to you the voters of Marigot that if Dr. Christmas is elected, on December 8th, I shall assign him in a full ministry in my cabinet come 2015.”
He said Christmas will be made a senior minister in the next DLP government.
Skerrit is also predicting 20 seats for his party.
“The United Workers Party cannot win the general election on December 8th and I am telling you this evening that the UWP will win less seats this election than they did in the last election in 2009,” he said, noting that Salisbury and Roseau Central constituencies will become DLP seats.
Meantime, Christmas has laid out his plans for the constituency.
He promised that in the area of agriculture the constituency will see rehabilitation of several important feeder roads, the reviving of the vanilla industry, the promotion of animal husbandry and poultry farming with viable and sustainable markets.
In the area of fisheries, he said, he plans to rehabilitate the Marigot Fisheries Complex along with important facilities such as a ice flaking machine and an engine repair department and the rehabilitation of an on-site boat building facility.
Roads will be repaired and their will be access to electricity and potable pipe water, according to Christmas.
Additionally, Christmas said, he is committed to making the Marigot Fisheries Complex a port of entry.
He said he has plans for the North East Comprehensive School to be used as a facility “for distant education, teleconferencing with the Dominica State College (DSC) and the possibility of establishing the facility as a satellite of the DSC.”
“We hope to establish the faculty for auto mechanics, machinery and heavy equipment maintenance, also to complete the rehabilitation of the Layou Park to be able to host cricket, football and athletics,” he noted.
According to the DLP hopeful, he will be supporting the development of sporting facilities such as basket-ball courts and various sports clubs.
In the area of health he promised what the Marigot Hospital will become a “fully functional and staffed trauma center.”

Nevertheless, it took Kid Skerrit only a few days to allow the hospital to deteriorate to a dilapidated state where he had no alternative than to shut it down.
Some people everything they touch turns to gold, it appears to me that everything Skerrit hands touched over the past twenty years in Dominica has turned to ashes!

You should realize that because Marigot people supported James all these years; Skerrit intentions was never to anything for the people of Marigot, he victimized the people of Marigot because they refused vote for him. A medical doctor calling is to try to save life, not politics. For people such as Christmas, rather than subject themselves to the will of Skerrit, they would be better off practicing their profession in the living room in their house, treat the poor and needy, take the few cents they can afford to pay, he would be much better off in the long run than dealing in Skerrit’s crap. Dominica is not the only place a doctor can work, if he was trained in Cuba he can work on any of the other Caribbean islands; there was a time when Cuban trained doctors could only work in Jamaica, and Guyana, this is no longer the case. Nevertheless, if he was trained elsewhere, his medical credentials will not be accepted in the U. S. A., however, if head migrate here he can take the FSE, for doctors, and pass it. If he fails the exam that is not a problem, because there are places here which prep: foreign Doctors for the examination, and work here; so no medical doctor should have to get themselves involved in any sort political crap in Dominica.

Just remember Papa Doc started out as a Medical Doctor(Francois Duvalier) and see what he turned into. Dr. Mengele was a Medical Doctor also and what a monster he became. I really, really, really thought Skerrit was going to honor his new candidate last night by renaming “The Marigot Hospital” ‘The Dr. Martin Christmas Woodants Hospital’. This new name hospital has been the legacy of Dr. Martin and the DLP in Marigot.
I am a dominican living in the virgin Islands my heart is in Dominica. wrong things in the virgin Islands does not hurt me as much as when it happens in dominica. Just yesterday 18/11/2014 we Elected a new governor his competitor was someone who was in power for 18 years, 18 years of waste time every time I think of this competitor of the new Elected governor I see skerrit. Its a feeling that you feel in your gut that tells you its time to make a change, have you ever eaten somethings and you eat too much of it you get( wiping yaa?) not sure if I spelt it right but you know what I mean. well skerrit is in wiping yaa stage now. dominicans I don’t leave in dominica now but just last week I got a call from st thomas there is tickets available to anyone who wants to go dominica to vote, the call was for me to go. I cannot see myself do a thing like that. If I were to do that I would have voted for uwp,but I don’t support none of the parties in doing that.I believe those who in the kitchen feeling heat should know how hot it was for the last 14 years. So assuming that the DLP wins the election, though that impossible based on what I know is happening on the ground, would Skerrit make him the minister of Agriculture since he fired Matthew? Skeritt is sick. Farming in Wesley calibishi woodfordhill and marigot is what kept Dominica’s economy for years. It is through farming that most people out there were able to build there homes, send their kids to school and remain independent. It is probably the same farmer who was wise enough to be self dependent to send Dr Christmas to school. I never know people from that part of Dominica depending on gov handouts.
