PM wades into poll controversy

Skerrit said polls are held from time to time in selected constituencies
Skerrit said polls are held from time to time in selected constituencies

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has added his voice to the controversy swirling around an alleged poll saying he is not engaging in “gossip” and “rumor mongering.”

The poll reportedly done by Peter Wickham-led CADRES showed the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) winning eight sure seats if general election is called, according to journalist Carlisle Jno Baptiste.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday Skerrit dismissed the allegations and pointed out that he is confident the DLP will win by an even bigger margin in the next general election.

“It is interesting that people would say that the Labour Party has eight sure seats and it is also interesting to note the seats that were left out of these eight sure seats and you know you only need eleven seats to form the government,” he said. “I can give you the assurances that the Labour party will maintain and increase its position in the parliament whenever elections are called.”

The prime minister argued that the DLP is the only party that has articulated a vision for Dominica.

“Clearly we are the only party that has a plan for this country,” he stated. “We have demonstrated our prudent and responsible management of the economy in very difficult times. There are countries that talk about sending people home and they have sent people home. There are countries that are talking about salary cuts and making serious adjustments to the budgets because they are experiencing challenges. We are also experiencing challenges but we always put to the fore of our economy prudent and responsible approach to managing the economy.”

Skerrit noted that the DLP has responded to the needs of the people while being responsible in managing the economy.

“We are very comfortable and confident about the Labour Party wining the next general elections,” he remarked. “Absolutely confident about this and we are strengthening our positions. Our youth movement is as solid as ever the young people have literally taken over the campaign and preparing the party for elections. The women’s arm is well oiled, the party branches are working and meeting regularly and they have indicated to me that they are ready any time that I am ready.”

Skerrit did mention that polls were recently conducted in selected constituencies to guage the performances of members of parliament.

“From time to time we would do polls and we would do polls in selected constituencies to determine how does a member of parliament stand whether there is a change needed to be done in that particular constituency,” he noted.

The prime minister noted this was done “in a couple constituencies and they required change and that was done.”

“We are very comfortable with the changes our numbers have gone back up and even beyond the 2009 figures and the people are energized,” he said.

Wickham has strongly denied his organization had conducted the alleged poll basing his arguments on the fact that only a national poll could show the DLP having eight sure seats.

However Jno Baptiste is standing behing his story saying that he never reported a national poll was held.

    Hi All
After a thorough evaluation of the Previous General Election Results, the PRER (prayer) 8-O and my (un)professional interpretation of the Present Partisan Political Positions (we analysts say the PP, PP 8) ), Here’s my Prediction for the upcoming General elections:
    UWP Wins 7 seats:
Castle Bruce, Marigot, Morne Jaune/Riviere Cyrique, Roseau North, Roseau Valley, Salisbury and Wesley

DLP Wins the other 14 Seats.

The error within my calculation is plus or minus 2 seats.
So, although an optimistic UWP reading of 9 seats will be a fantastic result for UWP, and even though PM Skerrit will have a hard time swallowing his “we. .we winining everything” vomit,
    . . . It’s gonna be 5 More Years of DLP.

And you can take that to the . . . . hhmm, Rum Shop

I was just thinking how you never know what comes next. Less than a year ago Skerrit thought he was cruising to a next victory with Edison James stuck in a groove. Then, unexpectedly the music changed coming from a totally unexpected quarter for which Skerrit was unprepared. A new meastro and a music that catch the taste of the public and overtake Skerrit and now has to follow that tune with his own cover version and always behind. Is a different piper that calling the tune now and he must follow. His own record worn out. Linton is smart limiting tenure to two consecutive terms only. People get tired and bored after a while and politicians tired and boring. Human beings are fallible, including those who put themselves in the public limelight.

Its really time for this Skerrit administration of frustration to go away. Time for them to leave. Dominicans must have the courage to tell them enough is enough. Time to Go. For to long so many things are just brushed aside and nothing is done. You have a Prime Minister who has never taken any action against failed ministers or pal reps.
look now Mr skerrit is on a roll giving out gifts to all a sundry . Roads are bad, money is not flowing, poverty on the rise, people getting sick, pressure and stress and anxiety on the rise, prison is being filled with youths, ladies are even tempted to do wrong things to earn a living, things are very very very bad…… Yet Mr Skerrit is out their giving gifts…….. I am sure that these gifts are campaign techniques….. That’s why religious folks should be very careful upon receiving gifts from politicians, such gifts are never for free…………
Its sad to even read that the PM is now giving the assurance that the labour will be voted back into government….. Maybe he has become a lil god…… So many failed and tired MPs in this government yet there is the assurance that they will be back to rule for 5yrs…………………… This is reallyy silly season…… The PM look shaky because only a shaky person goes around trying to prove points and so forthhhhhhh……….
Hardly you can find a minister in this government with a degree or higly qualify for their ministry……..
No wonder the young minister for St Joe said millions will be invested in his constituency… I think its millions of stones, tarish and sea sandddddddddd not cash money………….. So dats how the story goes…. pants on fireeeeeeeeeeee……..

It seems to me that Dominicans are the worst in Caribbean in terms of tolerating these so called politicians. How many years have gone and the labour party minister continue to get fat and rich yet still Dominicans will go to the polls and vote Skerrit. i dont feel sorry for Dominicans at all, they are the ones who does not like themselves. These politicians come in and rob them of every thing yet still they bow down and adore them as if these folks are gods. So many allegations of wrong doings by against this government and not one person has been dealt with by the law……
Look at the PM and other ministers- if we can call them ministers- they all have lots of money, big houses, lots of land, and all kinds of fancy vehicles … what about Dominicans, most of them got nothing to call their own…
This government continue to just use Dominicans for votes. Dominicans are in total darkness and living in Ignorance with this labour party government….
Dominica will continue to remain as it because of a low mindset and the sadness of supporting this government …..
So Dominica and Dominicans reap what you all sow……. loook around and you all see nothing going on… Its gonna get worst because at the end of the day, folks continue to get more drunk and high and more blinded whilst these politicians go to the banks smiling …….
Pooooooor Dominicans who still supporting Skerrritttt and this failed Government……………. Reap what you all sow………..
when some folks who doesnot even have qualifications pretending to be so smart and running radio stations wellll dats ittttt for Dominicans……… how many ministers got degrees in this government? By the way they speak its plain to seeeee……….. I just feeellll sorry for those who support this government …… loook now Mr Skerrrit giving funds black is whiteeeeee, yet Dominicans brokes and bawling for money ,,,,,,,,, .. He playing politics with state money…………………………. Santa Skerrit

Selling Your Freedom? Really? Even using the word of the Leader of the UWP; I am almost sure the UWP member for Roseau would take offense to your repeating that word in reference to the Cathedral.

I see this so different from you; that is why we all have opinions, but opinions are just that, someone’s opinion and not really the truth. Is it?

I see the government giving the much needed funds to the Cathedral as caring for a people and a country. Why would any Dominican want to see the Cathedral not repaired and the government help in anyway it can is beyond my comprehension.

That Cathedral is part of all of us living today in Dominica. Whether Catholic or Non-Catholic. It is part of our heritage. Not one of us alive today was on earth when the Cathedral was built; that is to show us how important the Cathedral is to us. This is one of the things our ancestors maintained and left for us; which we should do the same, for future generations; So why not maintain a major part of our heritage? Any other country would do just that.

I can recall my school days going to the Cathedral, this is part of me and many of the children I went to school with and their parents. As an adult, I still enjoy going there. It is just a great feeling being in the Cathedral. So thanks PM for doing all you can to help restore the Cathedral.

This Government of Dominica sees were the needs are in our country and attend to them. We know all cannot happen at once because Rome was not built in a day. Most Dominicans appreciate the decisions you make for us. That is why you will be the government again after the next General Election. Dominica cannot go backwards, we are moving forward with the DLP.

That shows strong Leadership and a Government that cares for its people. Isn’t what we want and need in Government?

It is truly amazing to read the DLP mouthpiece, the Chronicle, today stating that they conducted their own poll, by phone during April/May, 1500 interviews no less! Their prediction is that labour will win 14 seats. Only two days ago the labour boss man publicly stated that not only will his party win but with an increased majority., which would mean min. 19 seats. Did the Chronicle editor and the M.P. even consult one another so they could at least correlate their stories?
Then their is the question of veracity of the Chronicle’s alleged telephone poll. Is it at all conceivable that no news of that would have leaked out in our small society, even while it was taking place? Secondly, why would you conduct such a poll immediately after Skerrit commissioned a professional poll from his friend and confidant Peter Wikham unless he was disappointed with the outcome and wanted a second opinion that would flatter him more. Thirdly, there is the timing of the Chronicle report only four days after a local journalist broke the story of the Wickham poll, now confirmed by the P.M.
Even if the Chronicle poll results are true it is an admission that, contrary to Mr. Skerrits expectations the labour party will lose seats in the next election. Whom to believe and what a mess. Malgraysa

I have heard the talk, “Change is a must,” but time has come when this change must become a reality. I don’t know whether Skeritt takes Dominicans for fools or for granted. As a leader, where is the man’s communication skills. It didn’t take him much time to go on all news media to deny Carlisle’ s report. It took approximately two weeks for him to mention something about his trip to China. He did not report to the nation about his trip, he goes to a local oneline news portal, which is alleged owned by a strong supporter of the Government and confesses that the nation will be notified later. That is leadership and communication skills.

Isn’t there a country which only allows election campaigning for a maximum of two weeks and then it’s straight to the polls? I think it’s either Canada or France, please correct me if I’m wrong. I think we need to try this, because all of this he said and she said is just getting old. I swear these politicians are like high school girls. We have people ready to cut someone’s neck for politics…families divided…one would think we having our own Russia and Ukraine in Dominica…gosh man. Just campaign for two weeks…two weeks is enough time to lay out your plans and ideas…then hit the polls. This drawn out process is causing way too much division. Time we start focusing solely on developing out nation, rather than the party politics.

I wasn’t referring to the PM only…my comment is simply about the entire system…I understand he was asked a question, but this is how it works. One side says something, then the other side is asked a question about what was said, or simply feel the need to hit back and it just continues from one topic to another. Some of us are tired of all of that, and more that half of the time all of this is causing division. I wasn’t knocking on the PM for responding, I’m knocking the system. They say if it ain’t broken, why fix it? Well, this one broken eh and we should really consider giving the next government a mandate to fix it.

O.K. So Labour under Skerrit is able to attract two new candidates so far:

Cassius Darroux (It is possible that the poor guy thinks that the Government scholarship comes from the Labour party and he is obliged to run elections for Skerrit. As soon as he finds out that he is under no such obligation he will find a job in a regional or international organisation and further his studies.

and Athenia Benjamin who has been living in Canada since before Christ walked planet earth.

UWP Team Dominica and Lennox on the other hand are able to attract the following new candidates:
Dr. Thompson Fontaine – PhD in Economics
Mr. Joshua Francis – Attorney-at-Law and Economist
    Ms. Eunica Victor – Attorney-at-Law
    Mr. Ronald Charles – Attorney-at-Law
Ms. Joseph Isaac – Industrial Engineer
Mr. Jefferson James – Civil Engineer
Mr. Nicholas George – Retired Police Inspector
Mr. James Alexander – Retired Teacher
    Ms. Monell Williams
    Mr. Higgs Adams
Mr. Issac Baptiste – Town and Country Planning Specialist

Marcus the reality is that some constituencies vote party regardless of candidate Grand Bay & Marigot are examples. Go figure out howmany constituences do & which party has the majority. Candidates make a difference based on their relationship & history with the electorate in certain cases. Check the history of candidates and figure it out. Labour is a sure winner.

First things first Hon Instagram. 1) You belong to the DFP not the Authentic Labour Party.
2)Mr Jnobatiste got vindicated he is not the most professional but he tries and for that i am glad.
3)There are daily beouf meetings to find out who say what ,where & when even Kairi has it more direct on air just this morning a caller was so low to report whatwas said on q95 by the # 2 on the Roseau central ticket lol! Bouef again.
#3)Skerrit noted that the DLP has responded to the needs of the people while being responsible in managing the economy. The prime minister argued that the DLP is the only party that has articulated a vision for Dominica. Yes hon Instagram: The BBC just reported DA passports are the cheapest world wide. So by just raising the fee to 200k will double funds available for the red clinic etc. I guess the 3 other constituencies can be flooded with $ next time around so one can stop being jealous of Mitchell in Grenada.

Much ado about an internal process which the contracted consultant did not wish to confirm due to client confidentiality issues. Normal contractual requirements I would think. The journalist appears not to be completely off track either except that perhaps the wrong impression of the content of the conversation with the consultant may have been given.

Poll or no poll, however, as a voter this election for me is not about the ruling party and its leader. I have sat in this country for over ten years being bombarded morning, noon and night about him and his Cabinet not having one good bone in their bodies and not having done even one little thing right.

Against this background, this election is or should be about the people who are putting themselves forward as the alternative, particularly the leader. My analysis would therefore be of the score-card so far of the alternative leader and his group.

Just asking then in terms of
    A. Character assessment:
    — If the current leader is as arrogant as he has been labelled, is the alternative less arrogant?
    — If the current leader who is in the seat of power exhibits dictatorial tendencies as accused, has the alternative who is not yet in that position given indicators of such tendencies?
    — If the office of PM requires level-headedness; negotiating & people skills; astuteness and ability to think on one’s feet while projecting maturity and wisdom in speech what would be my rating of the current and aspiring leaders in that regard?
    — if I had to assess the manifestation of statesmanship and patriotism at home and abroad what would be my conclusion?

    B. Development Plans
    — In terms of a vision and realistic plans for the country’s development with a plausible indication of how the plans will be realised, what would be my assessment?
    — If the ruling party does not have a coherent plan for the country as accused does the new hopeful have one?
    — What would be my assessment of the ability or inclination of the leaders to unify people behind a development plan, which I think is a critical success factor in development?

I could go on and on as a voter but space does not permit. This is my dispassionate approach to determining my vote.
I need in conclusion to remind both incumbent and aspiring that the environment which we create in the country is the one we will inherit and have to manage, since human beings do not, at the drop of a hat, change habits and attitudes which have been inculcated over time. Be warned!

Generally, people are not that bad and as bad as those who oppose them and are non-supporters. Surely, a man cannot be all that bad.

So Skerrit is confident he is going to win next election and by a bigger margin eh? I wonder where else he thinks will win apart from those 8 Peter Wickham so generously gave him. Does he really think his paid Bishop can help him? I know he from Vieille case and my parents always told me about a priest that dried out a large River in Vieille case. But Skero that was then, this is now. You can call and bribe all priests, Bishops, pastors, and Evangelist in Dominica to make mass for you, but that still will not save you. The writing is clearly seen on the wall and no wonder you cannot call election. You think is you and 5 month old son alone that know the date but what you don’t know is that, our Deliverer has seen our tears and like Moses in the wilderness, he has raised Lennox to replace you and your ungodly deeds which have place Dominica where it. Your delay in announcing the date was His giving Lennox enough time to get ready and prepare for change. You are gone Skerro and you know that. Just go peacefully my friend

“I give you the assurance that the Labour Party will maintain and increase its position in parliament whenever elections are called.” There we have it – from the lips of the Dear Leader. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear and those who have a discerning spirit, let them discern.

To channel President Obama, “You can’t make these things up, folks!” Please note that the key word here is “assurance.” Recall that from the Dear Leader’s own lips, the only other person besides himself who knows the date for the elections is Dimitri and then you will get the big picture. The democratic process clearly forbids the declaration of victory or an assurance of victory in an election before the procedural due process required by the Constitution. We already know things to the effect that no constitution can keep him back, but is our Dear Leader channeling his counterparts in Eastern Asia and perhaps even the one with the bouffant hairstyle?

So a Poll was done. Interesting. I thought is constituents that vote members. So Pm is trying to replace people in constituencies they have won? If that is the case then it tells a lot about a party in power with 18 seats and the people know some of the ministers are useless.

People: we have another option. An option of folks with credible background. To adjust to change is to survive the long run. Skerrit is running an authoritarian style gov. Where he knows it all, and controls it all. If not his ideas then nothing else. That is insecurity and bad for Dominica. He needs to go. The sooner the better. Many heads better than one.

Zulu it’s obvious you don’t follow or even listen to the arrogance of the alternative, take the firing of Ronnie as an example, or the manner in which he shouted and shut up the lady in St. Croix!!!!!

The alternative knows nothing but wants to control everything, that makes him worse than what we have!!!!!

        June 5, 2014

@ Joe. It is a fact that all political leaders have a level of arrogance. It is actually a character that is needed to get in politics. It is mostly confidence, with some arrogance. I have known the PM a very long time since the days he taught me at PSS. So when you talk bout arrogance there are few in the Caribbean who can beat him. However, I think its a cover for his insecurities based on the way he governs. You are admitting he is a devil because you seen his work.
Having said this I do not judge opposition or gov on their arrogance. I look at actions and results and arguments. The current party with 18 seats is not satisfied and scrambling, ineffective and dishonest and is on the wrong path. Your philosophy of sticking with the devil you know tells me you do not think there are people in Dominica who can do better. This is bad for country and survival.
I believe uwp members are capable Dominicans with forward looking message. Its time to move on. Can’t do the same and expect different results.
In scientific world change is survival embrace it or you will face extinction

And the UWP is made up of Labourites and Freedomites, all of whom are Dominicans and are family and friends. I bet that most members of the UWP have family and friends who are members of the DLP. Wouldn’t you agree?

We cannot allow some people who believe they want to be where others are, and if they see they might not be able to accomplish that in a short space of time; are bent on destroying a whole people to get there.

So I believe if the UWP don’t stop all the verbal abuse of Dominicans who are our family and friends in the DLP; Some of which they can never take back and may never be forgiven for; some of the same Labourites and Freedomites who make up the UWP and believe that the grass was a little greener with the new UWP will go back straight to the DLP because they are seeing that the grass is really not green at all when taking a closer look.

Why destroy my family, my friends, my future and my country future for what? And for who?
