President Savarin takes office with “no malice or ill will”

Charles Savarin has said he is taking up the office of the president of Dominica without malice or ill will towards anyone.

Speaking at his swearing in ceremony on Wednesday he also said he is becoming president “without fear of intimidation” and with respect for all the traditions and laws of Dominica.

The president said this year’s celebration of independence under the theme “One Nation, One Dominica, Celebrating 35,” points to what he describes as a “a biblical truth.”

“A house divided against itself cannot stand,” he stated. “It is a reminder to us that as we journey together on our mission to build a more just and prosperous society that differences in approaches and priorities will be merged from time to time. That we should always seek to resolve such differences through dialogue and compromise. And that the bigger picture is Dominica, the state and the people and not self nor the interest of any one group or organization.”

He noted that the prosperity Dominica seeks as a nation “will be more easily and successfully achieved if we pursue them collectively.”

“Indeed progress in that regard will be rapid with the restoration of civility and decency to public and private discourse…” the president said.

He pointed out that it is healthy to have continuous dialogue on various points of view “but in doing so we must strive against creating the impression at home and abroad that we are a people at war with each other.”

Savarin said all citizens of Dominica have a voice as guaranteed by the Constitution but warned that “the voice given is neither unfettered nor unlimited.”

“It is to be exercised in accordance with the limits imposed by the said Constitution and the laws on the land,” he stated.

He noted that in “any true democracy” the voices of the minority “can be an important input in the process of moving the society forward.”

“And in such a manner that all views and opinions can be heard and considered,” he remarked. “In the final analysis however, decisions will be arrived at by the majority of those participating in the process.”

The president said while the majority has the responsibility to propose and decide “the minority has the responsibility to analyze.”

“And where they disagree with the majority to put forward alternative proposals,” he said. “They must also see themselves as an alternative or replacement in due course to the government and not as a second or parallel government. This means that the minority at all times must be well informed on the critical issues of the day. It is only if they so inform themselves that they will be able to advance credible alternatives to the issues and so engage and even pursue the majority to reflect their point of view and modify and address their decision with such modification can be shown to be in the interest  of the people.”

He said all Dominicans have the opportunity to ‘perfect our democracy’ in an “atmosphere of peace, respect and goodwill to all our citizens and residents alike.”

Charles Savarin epitomizes division, malice and ill will. The entire speech is based on a divisive theme of minority participation and majority control. Charles Savarin is an insult to the office of the president. Charles Savarin sees all Dominicans, who are opposed to his point of view as Political terrorist. Charles Savarin is not just controversial but antagonistic and dangerous.

Charles Savarin intimidates people and instills fear. He is uncomfortable with the truth and is comfortable in disrespecting the traditions, laws and especially the constitution of Dominica, which he hypocritically swore to uphold.

With Charles Savarin as president, this year’s celebration of independence cannot be successful under the theme “One Nation, One Dominica, Celebrating 35.” There is no truth to this statement.

The public house of Dominica has been disrespected and divided against ourself. The society has failed and continues to fail. After the Skerrit’s DLP has abused us, they now want us to journey together with their corruption and bad governance on a mission to completely destroy our society.

Whereas the UWP and Dominicans always seek to resolve our differences through professional and mature dialogue, debate and compromise, it is the DLP and Charles Savarin who are causing confusion, chaos and division in Dominica. These people think only of themselves. They do not look at the bigger picture of the best interest of the state and the people.

Having destroyed our sense of civility and decency, Dominicans find it difficult to restore civility and decency to public and private discourse.

Whereas the population has been calling for more effective communication and debate, it is Savarin and the DLP who continue to tell us that we do not need constructive continuous dialogue and debate on the issues that confronts us.

Mr. Savarin has been the architect of violence and creating the impression at home and abroad that we are a nation of war and ro/ro. How hypocritical to say that all citizens of Dominica have a voice as guaranteed by the Constitution that he does not respect. Yes Mr.Savarin, in “any true democracy” the voices of the current parliamentary minority, which will soon be in the majority is important and may well be the only avenue of in moving the society forward.

Please do not lecture and patronize us Sir. Please admonish the worse Speaker of the House and your PM that all views and opinions ought to be heard and considered.

With Charles Savarin as president, all Dominicans do not have the opportunity to ‘perfect our democracy’ in an “atmosphere of peace, respect and goodwill to all our citizens and residents alike.”

With disrespect to the unconstitutional president and respect to Dominicans and the readers of DNO.

I listened to the swearing in ceremony yesterday and felt physically sick. Why? Well, not because as some may want to suggest that my blood pressure went up or anything like that but rather because of the lies, disingenuous expressions of unity and beguiling platitudes offered up by the various speakers.
For his part, Peter Augustine asserted that persons were wishing for the death of Mr Saverin during his recent illness. This lie can only serve one purpose and that is to further divide the people. Then Mr Skerritt went on say that people were calling the former president Mr Liverpool a country bookie. Which people Mr Skerritt, which people? Those days are well behind us now, so again a statement meant to divide and mislead. I’ll not mention Eustace Thomas as far as I’m concerned he is insignificant.
Now I turn to Mr Saverin himself. What can I say? Really! Are there enough words to describe the dishonesty of this man? “We should always seek to resolve such differences through dialogue and compromise” Was Mr Brisbane approached to dialogue before his call to boycott? Was he interested in compromise when he fought tooth and nail to force the PJ administration to give 121% increase in the face of tough economic times? As others have said all this is just talk and in no way reflects the actions and behaviour of this man hitherto.
Some ask why can’t we forget the past? To that I ask, how can we? How can we when, not so long ago he reminded Dominicans of the past: a clear indication the even he is not prepared to forget it. How can we when the very reason for his being accorded the highest office in the land is reference by his past activities?
And for those of you who disagree don’t just give the thumbs down, present you opposition in a reasoned comment.

    • Hmmm...
      October 3, 2013

You ask for comment…but there is little to be added to what you already said. The speech and the character of the man are miles apart.

Those are the words of a good man and a president of stature dignity intelligence not one filled with bitterness ranker and malice as the other side would want us to believe, it must be remembered that nothing the govt does is good enough for the uwp, so leave them alone and they will come home with their tales behind them, by the way I wonder if Sir Brian was nominated would the uwp accept?? You see, he too would be one sided as we have come to know lately. Anyway, welcome Mr. President may God bless you in and on the jod for Dominica’s sake.

Charles Savarin has said he is taking up the office of the president of Dominica without malice or ill will towards anyone,. . . yet he effectively draws the boundaries that puts Dominicans in their place by his reckoning

.. . by accident of BIRTH you become MINORITY; lack of WEALTH you are MINORITY; not supporting his POLITICAL PARTY you are minority; type of work you do you are minority; Kalinago you are a minority; not as educated as others you are a minority ad infinitum

He says a house divided against itself cannot stand . . . BUT WE HEAR minority minority minority … does it ring a bell? kakador- minority; cockroaches-minority; pigs at a trough-minority; mabouya-minority.

at least Charles you are HONEST no compromise just business as usual- I thought you would have tried to heal the nation; ZEBRAS CAN’T CHANGE THEIR STRIPES FOR TRUE – I gave you a chance now i’m joining the NO PRESIDENT masses – that’s where you classify me.

Hunt for Red October is equivalent to Hunt for a President from vermin to coward to opportunist Charlo. If a man hides behind a baptism to wed his under cover girlfriend what are we to accept.
Liverpool was more than a dissapointment Eluid is a l’homme fou.Just imagine this guy held two PS position simultanously to press a younger qualified civil servant what he will not do. If Minister Savarin can close Brizee Mart then we must ask President Savarin to verbalize HIV and world hunger into into extinction ….. Lennox Linton endorsed Savarin for President. ” Charles Savarin would have been a better bet than Alix Boyd Knight” Lennox Linton.

We need an opposition in Dominica that is more intellectual and more sophisticated, they are giving the PM and easy ride. They are totally paralyzed by reactionary politics and fixated on skerritts dimples. The same old talking points in 2013.Mr James how are you today “international airport” Mr James how is Marigot “international airport” Mr James how is the weather “didn’t you hear what I said INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT”.
Lets talk about the high cost of doing business in Dominica and the taxing of a tax on imported goods. The VAT is a killer of business in DA today not Savarin.

How can you ask Dominicans to show the highest level of disrespect to the office of the President because the President is not his choice, so what is Mr Linton telling me if my boss takes a decision that I don’t agree with I should show disrespect, and if teachers say something which the students disagree with the students should show disrespect, and if a parent tells a child something if that child disagrees that child should show disrespect?

If Mr Linton supports and encourages disrespect at the highest level then he must be admiring disrespect and the lower levels.

I wonder where he learnt to disrespect? Oh I know, from Charles saverin. Yes that’s right Charles saverin, the man who disrespected the first president, the one who sent people to burn Cools-Latigue and asked his supporters to disrespect president Mr V L Shaw.

And by the way, he also learnt it from the same saverin who encouraged young people to disrespect and dishonour their parents. The man who told us as young civil servants that we should not support our parents financially if the showed support or sympathy towards the then Labour Party and called our parents the ” dirty shoe ” people.
Has that answered your question or do you want me to continue? And just so you know, the Labour Party was in the majority then but dialogue and compromise were never options.

Mr Linton cannot help himself. He and his two sisters, one a nurse and one a bank clerk were hand in gloves with Charles Saverin and the Freedom Party.Soon he and maynard became Labourite.Linton recently joined the UWP and is hungry for power. He is not Freedom any more.In a democratic country you are allowed to change sides. He is trying to get somewhere just like Charles did.He is enyoying his freedom of choice. So let him tahe his disagreement to the courts or to theb polls. All this venum he is preaching should stop

Congratulations to the President. long live Charles Savarin.

    Question: What happened in 1979?
Awnser: A Prime Ministers ENTIRE work force went on strike, lead by the union leader Charles Savarin the Prime Minister of the day had so much guts he waited 49 days before he could react. Tell me who caused the strike to go on for 49 days (a) Public servants (b) union leader (c) Prime Minister Patrick John.
If you were Prime Minister and ALL your staff went on a strike (police, customs, nurses, doctors, firemen, postal workers, forestry everyone in ministry and the list goes on would it take you 49 days to negotiate.

    Thank You

The result for the 1979 strike caused both my parents to get 100% salary increase and the entire public service.

Thank you very much Mr Charles Savarin

Hurray, the criticisms by the Prime Minister, an Ambassador, two Senior Counsels and supporters of the Skeritt Labor Party as regards Mr. Lennox Linton’s qualifications to be Prime Minister of Dominica, I hope has come to an end. We will recall the barrage of criticisms that were leveled at him relative to his educational background. Today, a new head of state, in the person of Charles Savarin took office. Charles Savarin does not have a University Degree like Mr. Claudius Sanford, Edison James, Norris Prevost, Sprags John, Ron Green, Joseph Isaac and Isaac Baptiste. I believe that the universe is alive. I believe that the rules and laws of the universe are real and that they are enforced every day by the natural and mystical enforcers. Therefore no man can do wrong and not see it come back to him. No man can do evil and see good. Everyone shall reap what we sow, every single one of us. Every man will lie on his bed as he makes it. No man is exempt, there are absolutely no exceptions in these rules. That is why man must think before he acts, and think long term too especially if you are a man with dreams of greatness. So Mr. Charles Savarin, in light of these truths and these uncompromising laws of life that favors no man, you Mr. Savarin have to be regretting all the hurt, all the pain all the venom all the destruction and ill will you have rained upon your fellowman. You must now live in fear, now that you are ungodly and short (memoried) enough to sit in the perch where you have shot down men who sat there before you. If I was you sir, when offered that post, I would run away far far far far from it.Like Jonah in the belly of the whale. I would never accept that temptation, because that’s what it is, a temptation to sit in the high sit from which you shot down your predecesors. Now the hunter will surely become the hunted. Now the persecutor will surely be persecuted. Now you shall reap what you sowed. Surely this must come to pass. BONGK AND COMPEL, according to Dominican little children. If you don’t get your just desserts, then you will have disproved God, and the history of the world and the gospels and the bible will all have to be rewritten.Oh Mr. Savarin, you have surely eaten the bread that the devil kneaded. You have surely put the poisoned charlice to your lips. You have challenged God, so now lets see who wins.

  27. Umpire?
    October 2, 2013

As the umpire, let me give my fair verdict.
The DLP: It was a terribly bad decision by Mr. Skerrit and the DLP to elect mr. Charles Savarin as president of Dominica. Mr Savarin, though a good person and well qualified for the job, his reputation disqualifies him especially when it comes to uniting the nation. Apart from his role in the 1979 violence and national unrest, which I don’t believe we have ever recovered from and never will, the manner in which he has conducted himself on what is often referred to as the animal show, especially as minister for national security is nothing but disgraceful. To me by making him President is Mr. Skerrits way of telling the people that he is tired and needs a break from politics.
The UWP: I strongly supported their boycott of parliament yesterday and chose instead to protest. That to me was in order because Mr. Savarin is a very poor choice. However, I disagree with Mr. Linton who said that Savarin is Skerrit’s president and not Dominica’s. I find that is wrong! Whether we like him and the way it was done or not, the fact that he was sworn in today, he becomes our 8th president and UWP must respect that. When Mr. Linton said that UWP would not stand when president Savarin walks in, I feel the same way to. But I was turned away when Mr. Linton said that they would walk out when Mr. Savarin is introduced to me is very immature.

Mr. Linton and the UWP, which by the way is the party I support must realize that when Mr. Skerrit elected Mr. Savarin as president he actually handed the next election to the UWP as we all know, there are many, many, many laborites that are upset with the DLP and will even get more upset when they will see how Savarin and Skerrit will change our constitution to please Mr. Skerrit. UWP must show themselves as the solution to correct set Dominica on the path to success again and should stop behaving as little chidren. Now is not time to boycott or walk out, but instead, they need to show us their plan to advance the nation.

    • Mr. B
      October 2, 2013

I like your verdict. I hope the UWP reflects on it . God is a good God…. he does what he has to do in his time. We just have to have patience and allow him to do his do and we remain focused and dont overact. BETTER DAY ARE COMING

That we should always seek to resolve such differences through dialogue and compromise. And that the bigger picture is Dominica, the state and the people and not self nor the interest of any one group or organization.””

He noted that “the prosperity Dominica seeks as a nation” ““will be more easily and successfully achieved if we pursue them collectively.””

““Indeed progress in that regard will be rapid with the restoration of civility and decency to public and private discourse…”” the president said.

He pointed out that “it is healthy” to have “continuous dialogue on various points of view” ““but in doing so we must strive against creating the impression at home and abroad that we are a people at war with each other.””

There were coup attempts which we survived, although a few of our police officers including my family member suffered gun shots and even death at the hands of those who were trying to reinstate PJ and his group of bandits. At that time, the call was to ignore the numerous performance achievements of the UWP and focus ratther on corruption. What are these so-called plans the Labour/coalition present then to get into power in 2000? Well as if they did say they intended to paint the prison blue…………..

Now we have bold-face corruption going on, you all want to conveniently switch the mantra and say forget corruption and focus on performance……….a performance in this case which is a dismal indictment on Dominica’s most backward thinking government ever.

What i will not agree with is constitutional amendment to concentrate power, oppress people and to give ruling party advantage over the orther.

As the president rightly indicated everyone is entitled to there own views which has to br constructive. @justice and truth. Sometimes impressions matter. A five year hiatus may have been a great idea. His message would have more credibility. With the current political climate which he has added to when asking citizens to boycott a private business i do not think his words will help. Your point that anyone they pic is politica, though may be true is not valid because your actions can tell your personality. Public servants especially policemen are suppose to show nutrality because of the position they hold. Off course they have a political choice. Some obey the rules while others publicly and openly wave red flags and as a result are given possitions as head of Pm security and ranks.

To say that he needs a chance to prove himself is pure bs. He served 40 yrs in politics and other areas if he did not prove himself yet what more proof you looking for? It only tells me that you agree he should not have been selected under the current conditions.

We need to live our lives in such a way that is God fearing, honest, treating our neighbors with respect (even though we disagree with them), because what we do in the past surely comes back to bite us in the butt. We cannot be living anyhow, treating people anyhow, and then when we get into the political arena to say that “who is without sin cast the first stone.” I would not, and do not want anyone with a questionable past representing me, neither would I vote for such a person. I know how my family has suffered at the hand of this man. Have I forgiven him? YES! But just because I have forgiven does not mean that I want him to represent me. Forgiveness does not always mean that a relationship with someone will be completely restored. Ask a divorced husband and wife, who, though they may have a great relationship because of their kids, they are still divorced and choose to remain that way.

To make matters worse, while posing as a labourite he reminded the foolish people of what he did to them and the fools did nothing about it. His hatred still has him repeating the same “remove them at any cost” why is he holding such hatred against UWP? What ever they(UWP) May have done why can’t he forgive them after 13 rears? Congratulations to the newly inaugurated President, May God bless his office, and give guidance in all of his undertakings. I pray the he put Dominica first and seek to bring peace and unity in this beloved island.

My concern is that WE DOMINICANS have failed to respect the highest office in the land, and are passing on something the our youth that we may live to regret. I hear presidents being referred to a little country bookie from Grand Bay (respectable man); little boys; and even the last President, many had issue with him be in that office. My Goodness, do we really need to fight about something like that in such a manner, that causes us to disrespect the people placed in such offices, or are we angry about those recommending them to such office?
My question is, is it really charles Savarin that closed down a supermarket by calling for a boycott of some people? why is it then , the rest of the people did not continue to support that business? It means that only one set of people was doing business there, and the “supporters” of that businessman did not support his business, because as the laborites pulled out, business closed. So please people think! That business had prices way above everyone else, so maybe many people just could not afford to shop there.
Now why did Mr Savarin asked people to boycott? Because that businessman, asked foreign countries NOT to help us, because there was corruption and misappropriation of funds. That could kill our country my people. I think, in Dominica, we always look at one side of a story, we choose the juicy side and never get down to the real thing!
If Mr Savarin is able to call on people to take action that has so much impact, he is influential enough to be Dominica’s president!!

Mr Severin very words proved he should not be president of Dominica. He was too much in the melee of the government to be president.

Indeed he is and may have divinely allowed it to catapult this regime out of office because this is one of many errors that the Roosevelt Skerrit has made and one that is totally against the wishes of the vast majority of Dominicans. Where i stand, not even convinced that Savarin is what Skerrit really wanted because had that been the case Savarin would not have been the last minute choice for president, he would have been before Mr. Eluid Williams for example because he was right there.

Skerrit did it to avenge the public outcry and discarding of ABK, he way of getting back to us at least saw he analysed it in his head but little did he know that it was all in God’s plan in an effort to get the self serving politicians where they belong and that is out office.

Savarin, while taking an oath that is unconstitutional lied to you and other persons who are happy he’s the President. People forget about parties and who leads them focus on your CONSTITUTION and the RULE of LAW !. In todays day and age their are people in D’ica that still dont know what the document means they dont know their legal rights and that’s how you are been used. A large number of Lawyers on the Island are taking advantage of the people because they dont know better while they sit back with their mouth shut refusing to help to educate the masses about what the Constitution and rule of LAW means to them and when men like TIYANI speaks up they are upset.
Skerrit is in charge but he is not the only individual that broght D’ica to where we are today we have the other Ministers in Govt and we have the legal men/women they all have to be blamed and we have to make them know that they will pay.

I believe in the CONSTITUTION of the COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA and THE OFFICE of the PRESIDENCY I will continue to stand and show respect.

BUT I WILL NOT STAND UP FOR THE PERSON WHO IS NOW OCCUPYING THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND CHARLES SAVARIN HE’S AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL PRESIDENT HE’S LACKING WHAT IT TAKES TO BE ABLE TO BRING THE PEOPLE TOGETHER WHILE HE IS THE PROBLEM.

This is exactly what matured and intelligent people would do. They are in no position to state he will not do good when he has already shown what he can do which is why he was nominated and then elected President. It is foolishness on their part to be negative and comment against him.
An election was called, a prime minister was elected. A president is elected. Can any sane person say that they will not be successful? We do not know one way or the other. They should not even make such statements. They are only projecting their lack of maturity and intelligence including wickedness of the heart. People are judged by their words. They act as if they are so perfect and never sinned.
When outsiders read such foolishness, what will they say about Dominicans? Bet their reviews will give them a poor rating.
They cannot write anything good. It projects their dislike and hatred which add up to enmity. They are not wishing him well and are hoping for the worst. Is this the manner in which people should react?
What type of people are they? You call those people Christians and practicing ones? Their attitude will cause evil to descend on Dominica, to reign and to flourish in it because they do not possess godly hearts.
I reiterate, this is what they have depicted in their comments. They are cursing someone while they are receiving the same curses that they send. Are these people kind people? Obviously, not.

Well, if you recall, Charles Savarin declared that we cannot separate the messenger from the message. Ask him, if you can.

words are free and cheap and we always say what people want us to say. Similar word were echoed during his swearing in ceremony as minister of security and we know how you have divided the nation on the animal show. Remember how you called certain people by name on the show and accused them of being involved in the Christmas day fire show of GON Emanuel’s house while you along with your co-host succeeded in protecting those responsible?
Remember when you called on us to boycott the supermarket of Brisbane? THE CHARLES SAVRARIN WE HAVE COME TO KNOW CAN NEVER BE FAIR!

God is the one giving you life, keeping you on your two feet and giving you the fingers and mouth. You should use them wisely and in godliness lest they cause your condemnation.

Nice words Mr. President, lets see how these unfold with the events to come. I have heard so many nice words and references to our constitution but we continue to see those who swear to uphold our laws and constitution violating them repeatedly. I admired you you in my young days as a public officer but as you grow older, I lost some of the admiration ( will not go into details)I hope you can restore that which I have lost in your tenure. (You may choose to say not important but to me it is). Good luck and I am watching.

So what are you insinuating, you are perfect? There is not one person on earth who is perfect. What I like to say, some are more perfect than others. God knows whom.

Did he apologize to all those he hurt and caused great harm in his previous life? He should follow the example of Nelson Mandela and have some moment of reflection, with truth and reconciliation.
Savarin, the people who you hurt needs a mea culpa and only then you will have the moral authority to move on.
