‘No record’ of body search

Shanique Myrie claimed she was 'finger-raped' in Barbados. (Photo: Michael Gordon/Jamaica Observer)

Immigration and Customs authorities have categorically denied charges by a Jamaican woman that she was finger-raped and thrown out of Barbados when she arrived on the island just over a week ago.

In a front page story carried in the Jamaica Observer newspaper yesterday, Shanique Myrie alleged she was subjected to two demeaning cavity searches by a female immigration officer who also shouted degrading comments about Jamaicans when she arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport last March 14.

Sophia you are so right the people in Dominica. haven’t A clue the levels of corruption in JA: unlike. Barbados all Caribbean people have this soft spot for Jamaicans, well the bajans don’t. What I cannot understand is, why Barbados. After all they constant claims of being bigger prettier, claims of lawyers doctors scientists gold medals rappers. bobsleds waterfalls. They leave all of this to go and disrupt the bajans way of life. They do have anything in common with bajans. One thing about bajans they proud and very cunning. What U doing here if your country is so nice is what bajans always counter Jamaicans, Trini’s with, because both like to argue about what they have.

I have travelled to and via Barbados and have only had well wishes and assistance from the Bajan officials, even when they had to hold me back because of lack of visa for one of the countries though which I had to intransit.

Customs and Immigration is a country’s frst line of defense from undesirable visitors. I believe that if I gave them cause for suspicion they would cavity search me for cocaine like anyone else, and that would be their right. This person was a woman and she was searched by a woman, so no fetish came into play.

Not every country is insensitive to foreigners coming in to indulge in illegal activies. If her responses to questions etc gives cause for concern, of course they will search her and send her back.

Are you talking about the same nasty Bajans everyone dislike. I reside in the USA and have a house in Babardos and i ask myself everyday when is the housing market going to get better so i can sell that house. I invest in all the islands and Bajans are the worst. Those fools held me for 2 hours causing me to miss my flight to St lucia becuz i did not have my boarding pass to st Lucia. The sad part is i could not get my boarding pass unless i clear customs and go to the liat counter becuase i came down on AA. Bajans thinks they are better than the rest of the islands.

None of you were present to doubt and/or believe her story. Give her the benefit of the doubt. It may have occurred unless she is a mental case.
Certain government officials and I use the word/abbreviation, “etc…”, have a manner of destroying evidence to cover-up their evil actions. It is not the first time this has occurred and will not be the last worldwide.
Who is to believed in this case, the immigration office or this lady and vice versa? Give this a thought.

I’m with u on that one dum.Bajans tend to have that attitude towards the smaller islands and i’ve witnessed it on several occasions in Barbados.Jamaicans have their bad side but that doesn’t mean u can treat everyone the same because of the infractions of a few. It’s a pity how easy things can be swept under the table.

Dear Harry Husbands of Barbados, I am proudly taking this time to shine a little light on the elitist attitude that is prevalent through Barbados, I must say there are no transparency within the media of your country, what I mean (1) the government include the media always, always covered up the serious crimes what goes around your country? Just to keep your country looking violence free, from the eyes of tourism.
Mr. Harry when you here a rumored, 50% of the rumored will be true, reading Ms. Shanique Myrie statement I must say it’s very sentimental to a lot of people including me, and for you to denied every words in Ms. Shanique Myrie statement, its shows how incompetent you are to human rights, its shows how you and your government are covering up the serious crimes in your country, investigate the matters first before you can put out your own statement sir.

Now because of the popular tourist destinations image, the authorities will of course cover this up as tightly as possible. Imagine what this allegation, be it true or not, could do to the Barbadian economy. Who cares about this poor insignificant Caribbean National? Its all about money these days not about people….Capitalism at work.

      March 25, 2011

you’re a visitor to where? Have you ever been interrogated by a customs officer?

Cavity searches are common. Cover ups are common, especially when that country/island has an image to keep up.

Ask yourself, why would someone go public with such an intimate thing. What does she have to gain by making false accusations.

      • Anonymous
        March 26, 2011

Cavity searches maybe common but not by Immigration. Customs or the police are the ones who would be interested in the concealment of contraband. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not implying that she wasn’t searched but I’m stating that immigration does not do these types of searches. In other words eveyone working at the airport is not an immigration officer.

          March 27, 2011

          Hey Sugar,

Now tell me, if you were merely refused entry into a country would you make that public? If your privacy and human rights were being violated what would you do? In addition, are you aware that the Jamaican Consular resigned his post because of the unresponsiveness of the Bajan govt. to his claims of discrimination towards Jamaicans? Have you asked yourself why is it that Barbados is asking the Jamaican Consul to Trinidad and Tobago to intervene? Ask yourself pertinent questions about the issue.

I am telling you, Jamaicans are often discriminated against. You have not encountered such treatment because I am supposing you are not a Jamaican, Dominican, Vincentian, or Guyanese (and if you are, you are one of the luck ones). On another note, are you going to tell me that it is only Jamaica that has criminals?

Probably you don’t know this, but Jamaicans are proud people, irrespective of the economic class and level of education. So it takes courage for a Jamaican woman to talk about such violation openly.
