Antiguan AG and MP react to Stanford sentence

Stanford being led to court

Attorney General Justin Simon and Opposition MP Gaston Browne are among local government officials who responded yesterday afternoon to news of the 110-year prison sentence imposed on former billionaire Allen Stanford.

Neither expressed surprise at the sentence, which extends well into the next century.

Simon felt Stanford’s apparent lack of remorse and refusal to take responsibility throughout his lengthy trial worked against the once flamboyant investor.

110 years, how unrealistic!! Well he should never con anyone again! Can they at least recover at least some of the funds?
There are more Stanfords and Madoffs of another hue still walking around in the Caribbean who offered unaware hard-working Caribbean nationals false investment/Ponzi scheme opportunities, under the guise of foreign exchange trading. An ex telecommunications head honcho, former owner of SGL seems to be doing quite well. Anyone heard of SGL? Actually the individual has been nicknamed: ‘Madoff In Black.’ Many Grenadians and some Domincans too, including LIME employees lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, maybe millions; press reports indicated that SGL collected approximately US$30 million by 2008, yet the silence is deafening.

The individual has not been held accountable. One of the persons who was found guilty in 2011 was David Smith, a Jamaican banker/trader and mastermind of the scheme. Smith of (Olint) was found guilty of bilking $200 million from investors. Jamaicans were amazed at how Smith appeared to have decided to take the full fall and not name his co-conspirators, some of whom made a lot more than he did in the fraudulent scheme. We wonder how much did this individual get. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2011-08-11/news/os-david-smith-ponzi-sentence-20110811_1_olint-jamaican-banker-private-investment-club.

It is refreshing to see that both sides, Government and Opposition, share similar views on that sad situation. No doubt the image of Antigua is to be protected. These are lessens for us in Dominica. We take so much pride in washing dirty linen in public in an effort to make political mileage, sometimes in the name of patriotism.

Both sides of the political divide agree because they are both guilty of playing ” fool the people”while they butter their own bread. Sanford had them all in his pocket what are they to do start pointing fingers at each other?

Charles Taylor got 50 years and killed thousands of black people, was involved in child soldier recruitment etc, systematic rape and amputations of limbs. I never heard Stanford’s clients complaining before his arrest.

This reminds me of the importance of ensuring proper due diligence with regard to those who wish to acquire our passport and citizenship. It is not sufficient to simply state that the due diligence agencies chosen by our government are internationally recognized and leave it at that. These due diligence agencies along with our local criminal, financial regulatory and oversight bodies must ensure thorough screening of applicants for Dominican passport, whatever the reason(s) advanced by the applicants for desiring to hold a Dominica passport (investor or not). Government must ensure that background checks of those flamboyant individuals posing as investors are well scrutinized. The more one listens to Linton and Thompson, the more convinced he becomes that that we are not doing a good job in that regard. The explanations of Tony and Lennox on Kairi do not convince me any more that there is adequate supervision to eradicate the potential negligence in the due diligence process pertaining to the sale of our citizenship to international crooks

Dame Eugenia Charles saw through Allen Stanford very early on and dismissed his request to set up business here.

She was a very astute leader and I really do wish and hope our PM and future PMs can be as astute as she was.

it makes complete sense… they expect him to die in prison…

    • Little Big
      June 15, 2012

It all boils down to how much time he MUST remain in prison. His eligibility for parole is dictated on the length of sentence as well as other factors. Therefore, if they want him to stay a minimum of say 40 years in prison the sentence would have to be much much greater than 40 years. that would make him 102 before he can even think of trying to get parole.. that is if he can think by then.

In essence he gets a mandatory life sentence. I just hope that big Bubba, whose parents he swindled, is his cell mate.
