Barbados again! Another Jamaican woman says she was mistreated

Yet another Jamaican woman has come forward with accusations of mistreatment by the authorities at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Although Donna Benjamin-McLean’s alleged case of abuse occurred in September 2004, she has decided to come public in solidarity with Shanique Myrie — a Jamaican woman who has bitterly complained of being strip searched, finger-raped, verbally abused and locked up before being shipped out of Barbados without a reasonable explanation.

I have to put my 2 cents in 2004 I visited Barbados and the treatment thats was given to me as a citizen of Dominica was unheard of, they are speaking of one Caribbean but that is BS. That immigration officer did not take a second look at my passport he just assume that I was from the Dominican Republic and put me to sit on a bench maybe some of you know that famous bench. I sat there for 2 hour, every time I tryed talking to some body I was told sit there and wait when I saw another officer passing by, I called him to asked questioned him about the situation thats when he said let me look into it. Their excuse was they were having migration problem with citizens from the Dominican Republic which they were trying to control. I sat there looking at American citizens just showing their drivers license to immigration officers and sent on their way while we who are suppose to be one people are treated with such disgrace. It is time that we women start protesting for our safety he or she was no gynecologist

Barbados kick them all out. This is the same thing they tried in the Bahamas. You Dominican’s dont have A clue what the Bajans are going through- you all should shut to hell up. Forget all that- we are decent people sh– they’re far from. Bajans built they country ,and you people are telling me they should let Jamaicans, and guyanese destroy it…The other one talking about Barbados is not Sofisticated. Typical Jamaican Idiot think with MOUTH talk with BRAIN leachers.

Just FYI – from the Barbados Today online paper.
    http://news.barbadostoday.bb/barticlenew.php?ptitle=You're out!&article=4441

Five people are set to be deported from Barbados this month for drug trafficking. Four are Jamaicans. These four are added to the six ALREADY deported this year. Making that ten Jamaicans deported for drug trafficking in 4 months.

Do some of you have any idea how many people are found by the immigration/customs in Bds trying to smuggle drugs stuffed into their body cavities or even injested? How do you think these drugs are found? Customs agents are trained to look for certain signs. Occasionally they get it wrong but a lot of the time they get it right.
If protocol was broken in these cases the officer(s) should be called to account however I hope it doesn’t deter the rest from doing their job. The fact is mules are coming in with their loads everyday & must be stopped.
For all those that think it is a Bds thing alone….you need to get out more or you only got one eye.

This is not about drug dealers. This is about Professionalism and respect.

If all the persons convicted of trafficking drugs in Barbados were Dominicans; I as a law abiding Dominican who has never and will never traffic in drugs would expect and demand to be treated professionally and with respect. If I were not, I would expect The Government of Dominica to come to my defense.

Congratulations to the Government of Jamaica for defending their passport holders. I hope my government has what it takes to do the same.

I’m a Dominican and suffered embarrassment right here in Melville Hall by a woman security officer. I had a lip gloss in my bag that I accidentally forgot and she felt it was here moment to embarrass me for that…a junior secuirity officer was so angry at what happened….I could take it further but at the time was under a bit of pressure and said quietly that this was not going to be my battle….she is going to mishandle someone with the character to handle her and she will get exactly what she deserves……

Right there in Melville Hall we have issues….you give some of these people a break and they abuse their little power

Dem Jamaicans vex that them just cant walk into the people place with them drugs as they please. Look around the world at the amount of them locked away for smuggling drugs. All the time in the papers you read of Jamaicans in the Bds courts for importation. All this is just to try & frighten the immigration/customs into backing off. Keep your dirty drugs away from the rest of the Caribbean.
I been in & out of Barbados hundreds of times without any problems. Best airport in the region by far. If you dirty you going to get treat dirty. Unfortunetely innocent will sometimes pay for guilty. I hope our customs got a close eye on them when they trying to come here as well.

You are one idiot! Simply because you haven’t gone through problems doesn’t mean that these women did not suffered. You’re talking about drugs, you must understand it’s the elite in our Caribbean Countries that are demanding the drugs to sell it to hoard wealth. Please stop being an idiot and wake up.

So because Jamaican nationals have been caught and convicted for drug possession in Barbados in the past, that is an excuse to finger-rape all Jamaican women? This is absurd! Caribbean people are still very polite. Barbados economy is based on tourism.

They’re lucky that some of the victims have not spoofed their tourism advertisement and insert negative phrases in it, then post the video on YouTube. Just look at what happened to United Airlines when their baggage handlers broke a musician’s guitar and refused to accept responsibility for their actions. The video, United Breaks Guitar saw well over two million hits on line.

To blame jamaicans for drugs is ridiculous all kind of drug smugglers from all over is a jcan you want to blame.Blame alot of the white folk who roam the caribbeam smuggling drugs and money laundering, what about the venezuelans they caught in dominica waters an the prime minster and his boys give them their boat back.Barbados wrong for what they are doing to caribbean nationals, they do not do it to white people. So they kwon exactly what they are doing,do not defend that nonsence.

Frankly,i don’t believe every bajan immigration officer is bad.some people just to be too zealous.harassement exists in many formes in all ports of entry, the world over.the other caribbean countries better take steps before it’s too late.we have a lot to lose.

I too had some bad experience there in the late 70’s to early 80’s. I went there to get away for a few days to meet some friends from Dominica. A taxi took me to a motel in town.

After i went through prosses to book in after a white man, the woman ask me to remove my shoes. because she does not want me to walk on her capet with me shoes but she did not tell the white person the same thing, I ask her why me and not the other person. she replied,it is my place and I can do what I pleaseto do. it was late and I was tired,I took the room.

But that was not all. I paid her with EC$ and she did not accept it. She told flat out she do want that kind of money it is no good.she held on to my pasport until the next day so I can go the bank and get USD or their money. I swear, i will never go back the

      April 12, 2011

I totally support your first paragraphs, the way you were treated was WRONG period. However,
I do understand why the woman would not accept EC$. Really this is of no use to her. This is not a Barbados thing. Bahamas and Jamaica have their own currency as well, and they too would not accept the EC$ either, so I would not take this personal.

This is good to be coming out because not Bdos alone doing it. And the fact that this was even taking place is disgusting and shameful. Something of that nature can have serious consequences for Bdos. They think we need them more when in reality they need what we have more than anything. Not to mention that it is not only first world tourism supporting the Bdos economy. The us embassy semi closure alone will be enough to costs their economy some dollars. Not to mention if the Caribbean people decide to boycott Bdos completely. They just lucky that dca doesn’t have an international airport, I would have showed my support and boycott them too. But Antigua worse so…

Honestly, the Bdos gov need to be seen to take this serious, very! Or it will bite them really Hard

i agree it even worse in antigua them airport staff trying to act “brand new ” although there are a few good ones the majority of them are just way out of control. well i guess i can say the same for them woman in consumes in dca where you go to claim your barrels. they are just disgusting ughhh they carry on like is first time they ever had position in life … well i take it back for most is forst time they ever get position in life. i had to tell a few of them off once, the caribbean in my opinion lacks good costumer service. you dont all have to agree i am commenting on my experiences
