Prince Harry faces diplomatic test in Jamaica

Prince Harry

Jamaicans angry about the enslavement and brutal treatment of their ancestors by the British have objected to Prince Harry’s forthcoming visit to the Caribbean Realm.

Verene Shepherd, professor of history at the University of the West Indies, told Sky News: “In 1962 we had a kind of political separation. But decolonisation is not complete and Britain needs to make amends.

“There has been no settlement of the debt owed for the capture, enslavement and brutality of British on Jamaicans and our ancestors, and so I’m sorry, I object.”

if only, could black people unite we would have gotten reparation like the jews. But we are just a bunch of twets, and spend more time trying to take each other down. Blacks played just as big a role in the process of slavery. The white man never knew what was in the interiors of Africa until the blackman took him there. Let’s see if Jca will get some reparation.

As much as i’m usually an advocate against Jamaicans. I cannot stand Jamaicans. I have to fully agree with them on this one. The British should be ashamed of themselves.

Well said Wesleyman. But the slavemasters need to deliver
reparations for the 500 years of slavery.

Some of the comments are unbelieveably shocking, to say the least. They reflect how far we are willing to go to inflict pain on others to satisfy our selfish desires. How can anyone “Thank God for [the evils of] slavery”?

Would you ever “thank God” for your mama’s breast cancer and your pap’s prostate cancer because your miserable ass inherited their home and insurance policy, making life a lot easier for you? Do you think that any Jew would thank God for the Holocaust because they were finally able to officially establish the state of Israel after World War II? Would it matter to you if your sister is kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered as long as you benefit from her inheritance and /or insurance policy? Nothing could be more selfish than such attitude. What a shame!! The pain inflicted on others means nothing to you, as long as you are the beneficiary. Damn!!

This is garbage, there are probably more jamaicans in england than british people themselves, we need to make sense of these thing.
Dominica is the only former british colony who has completely severed ties with England. The Governor general of jamaica is the representative of the queen, if the jamaicans dont want to be affiliated with Britain, they need to sever all ties, and not take it out on the young man just to make a point.

This is not about who is in the uk and who is black and white bot it is about time to pay back for the evil which was and which is still done on our enslaved brothers and sisters while we stand aside and look and saying harry should not have viza to vist our islands while our people have to stand in line for a viza to visit the uk when all he has came from enslavement of our people and only the house slave will see it other wise

What you probably mean is that Dominica is the only Caricom member that went straight to republic status upon independence. For the record Guyana and Trinidad are also republics(with president as head of state). In thier cases they did it in 2 phases.

But one must not forget that there still exist a sort of pseudo-relationship with the Queen whereby as members of the Commonwealth they all recognise the British Queen as Head-of Commonwealth.

Interestingly Dominica’s membership with the ECCU also finds it carring a image of the same queen on all its currency units.

      March 6, 2012

If you foolish you believe that Dominica has “fully” severed ties with England.

Who is the head of CARICOM might I ask?

Whilst I am not the one who wrote African history. I know enough to denounce slavery and the subsequent crumbs and condecension that ensued. Your wanton introduction of the muslim arab perspective, is but a futile academic distraction. Please remain focused.

An ‘ex-slave’ thanking his ex-masters for this slavery atrocity is tantamount to a woman thanking the rapist after being violated, because he handed her a leftover sandwich afterwards.

Very interesting. All I know is if you know yourself and respect yourself and others, you will get the respect you deserve. Treat others as you wish to be treated. And demand respect! I agree even a very poor unfortunate Jamaican has a much stronger sence of pride than the majority of Dominicans. Why? I don’t know, but I do believe Jamaicans would be much better off in beautiful Africa. And lets not forget that we, all over the world are a broth of white, red, yellow and black running through our veins. There is no pure race. We all are one. {Hurt never help ever} One Love

But you all forgetting the other point in the article:

Thank the contributors of our constitution back in the 1970s that Dominica chose to have its own national head of state from the time it became independent. We were the only former British Caribbean colony to do so. Guyana and T and T went republic many years after Independence.

Well now we can sit back and look at all those other states divide themselves on monarchy or republic. At least we Dominicans do not have to go through that business. We there already longtime!

You all better stop looking at Africa in that negative way. Africa is still a very rich continent and it is changing for the better. In a few years from now you will regret your lack of information and understanding.
You are thinking about your self but please have some consideration for the generations to come.
Know your History, Know your Culture.
    Stop the ignorance !!!

I do agree with Jamaica’s stance in taking full control of their destiny without a representation of what is evil to still having dominion.

We should also take a stance against all that represents evil in our mind, lives etc. and demand respect by giving it.

We must all stand up and speak out when evil try to presents itself in our Country and lives

    Very interesting comments –

I agree to an extense to the first comment about being glad of not being in Africa. As culturally proud i am of my heritage, i am very happy that i am not in Africa. When I see and read about the abuse of women and living condition. That’s why i honour my forefather’s forced sacrifice by not taking my life in the wonderful part of the world for granted. I choose to walk, talk, dress, behave, think in “EXCELLENCE”

Slave is not only physical chains but is even more difficult mentally.
What i realise is that we black people are still stuck in slavery “mentally”. Every race on the planet earth have been enslaved at one time or another but we are still lagging behind in moving forward and upward- still blaming the white man.

Just my thought – you may disagree but that is ok – it is healthy

Thank the Most High for slavery. If it wasn’t for it I would be somewhere in Africa being raped, or my child being forced to be a child soldier, or living in a hut made of cow dung, or having to marry many men because of some stupid tradition, or having to align myself with some tribe and kill other people that don’t belong to my tribe.

Yes, I said it. Thank God for slavery.

So tell me how we would have gotten to Dominica? We would have hopped on a boat and row merrily across the Atlantic?

If it were not for slavery we would not be born period. Sometimes sentience can be confusing.

Implying that all those problems are not a result of European’s exploitation of Africa.

If we were in Africa, all of us, we would not be in the state of misery, despair and poverty that we are now in. (Strength in numbers) We are now a by-product of the slave masters and their children. If we had never been removed from Africa, we would be a force to reckon with!!! We can’t even acknowledge the fact that we are Africans, let alone be free!!

I don’t support slavery, but there’s one thing we need to realise. If it were not for slavery, we (and our ancestors) would still be in Africa. We would be in Ghana and other poor states, not enjoying the Beautiful Caribbean and all it has to offer. Everything really does happen for a reason.

    • zandoli

Zandoli I quite agree with you. I don’t believeing in rewarding evil for evil. But soometime we as a people needs to stand up and speak up for our wright. We has to send a message that we are humans like everyone else and we need to be respected . instead of having them add salt to the our injury. medication is needed for injury and not insult. We are not a “laughing stock. We are humans and deserves respect. No offense to anyone but we need to be resspect we do not need people “making love on our hungry bellies” Away we the “making love on our hungry bellies. let us love each other in this world we aall needs to be respected . Respect should not only be to those in the “high placeses of the earth. We are smarter than that. “Every mountain shall be remove, but by the spirit sayeth the Lord”
God bless Dominica, God bless the Caribbean God bless Africa, God bless the whole world

I believer in socialising with everyone but I do not believer in worshiping the Gods of this world.
Instead of making wrongs right, they are asking for “worship”

      @ w

So you are happy that millions of your gradparents had to toil for 400 years of brutality for free? you are happy that multitudes of your female grandparents had to be violently raped for that?

How narror minded and selfish can one get? No one knows what would be the state of africa if all its brightest were left there, and if they were not colonised and made second class and devided by the same inperialist. so it is really unfortunate to say that they would be in the same condition particularly when you have to consider that the major 1st world nations got a huge economic jump start by over 400 years of free labour as well as the industrial revolution that it fostered

Ghana is actually considered the Los Angels of Africa. So Ghana is probably not a good example try senegal, congo, burundi, rwanda.

  16. March 5, 2012

hhhmmmmmm i wonder how Dominicans feel about that??? why you ask??? because a little oil was thrown on the foo dogs and they were saying “hang the run away slave for massa sake”… it took young students from D.G.S to protest to get the authorities attention… this generation of adults in dominica needs some spark… if this was done by some dominicans… the majority would be saying “don’t emberrass our country” etc etc smh

      @ mouth of the south

I wholly support your stance. Thankfully the Jamaicans have more pride in themselves than the average dominican. Most civil rights movements in America, UK, and otther areas of the diaspora where proudly led by brave jamaicans. many of the others just followed afterwards.
