Protestors clash with police in The Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas -Protesters clashed with police and pushed through barricades outside the House of Assembly in Nassau on Wednesday morning as Bahamas Telecommunications Company unions continued its push to stop the sale of 51 percent of BTC to Cable and Wireless Communications.

A senior officer estimated the size of the crowd at Rawson Square to be between 700 and 800.

Protesters and police officers fought through the barricades as police tried to control the crowd. And the doors to the House of Assembly had to be locked.

As Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham delivered the mid-year budget statement, shouting protesters could be heard in the background.

From behind barricades protestors waved Bahamian flags and placards emblazoned with “Privatize not Foreignize”, “Get lost Cable and Wireless” and “Bahamians are the final authority Mr Ingraham.”

The government of The Bahamas and CWC have already signed the shareholders agreement and share purchase agreement, which will give Cable and Wireless the controlling interest in BTC.

The sale is pending the approval of the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA).

    why dont dominicans see…i think the opposition is way too weak and is extremly coward,thats what the labour party knows the UWP doesnt command a fair radical wing in dominica..

    the opposition forces in dominica are very unwise..they chat too much and nothing to show..
    the illegal prime minister is right they will speak for five years and more…

    its sad that the opposition forces lack depth and strategy,in dominca’s case where they are completely gutted ignorantly…you must have a radical wing or leader to stir things up…
    in countries where citizens are smarter,wiser understand issues and love their country to the fullest its easier but Dominica is a special case which requires and 100 times more vigour and forceful aspects.

    Sudan, Egypt, Libya, what these leaders all had in common? Check the news and you will see they all had massive support and power for years. We on the other hand in little Dominica enjoy talking about 18-3. Please people we need to move away from that can of thinking. think Dominica first and not party , we beg the people in power to do what is right , Dominica belongs to all of us and it will take everyone to develop this little rock.     why is it soo soo hard for the wider ppulation to c that the country is heading in a dangerous path under the current leadership? Do some research on how leaders like Quadafi, Sadam, Castro, and Chavez and others started out. it seems this country is heading that that same direction. for the leader(s) has/have no remorse for anyone but their selves and families. to keep their ego a float they must brainwash person under them that they can use to keep them in power. POWER! ASOLUTE POWER!
    This Govt have done good things and bad tings. which one out weighs the other? the same Q can go for the passed admin.

    Our people have a fundamental right to hold protests to voice their concerns. If it comes to that in Dominica, we hope that the protestors are reasonable with their demands and the issues whatever it is, is dealt in a just manner. We hope that the protests are of a peaceful nature.

    Instead of risking precious lives in Dominica, I suggest village councils hold discussions and referandums, meetings etc to discuss issues that affects Dominicans on a nationalistic level; for e.g issues such as crime, child abuse, unemployment, human resource as it relates to brain drain, agro-processing issues, export/imports issues and so many more issues to be discussed. The views expressed by the public in these meetings should be noted by the current government and proactive actions should be taken to address these crucial issues. The organizers or leaders of these meetings should play a proactive role to represent the interest of the people. These meetings need not be of a political one. We need to focus on issues as a nation without all this bickering and infighting amongst ourselves.

    Dominicans saw a similar situation when uWp sold DOMLEC to CDC, a foreign company and there were no domonstrations. We waited for the elections an voted them out. Just an observation.

      How you know the protesters did not have permission, there is nothing in the article to suggest that. And why we have to get our turn, i have been reading your comments and its seem that you are longing for a riot. I just hope you are living in Dominica and if what you want comes you would be part of it when people will be getting hurt and some maybe imprisoned. And when the country is damages and the turmoil that may ensue when lost of economic activities grips the country, I hope you will be there as well to feel the hardship. Demonstrations though necessary do have devastating effects and should only be used in extreme situations. This action can be too dangerous, to be used to unseat a political party. There a many order political strategies that can be used.
