REDJet advertisement causes stir in Jamaica

An advertisement for low cost carrier REDJet has been creating quite a stir in Jamaica.

The advertisement depicts a man shouting at another man, with the title “Office Stress?” and it is not going down well with many online bloggers.

“Why is it always the black man who is the employee?” one blogger asked.

Another echoed the famous line of Bob Marley, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery none but our self can free our minds.”

Another, who described himself as a ‘white Jamaican,’ said he is tired of being portrayed as a slavemaster. “I am in the struggle too,” he wrote.

But others did not see the advertisement as a big deal. “Only idle people think about idleness,” one blogger wrote.

“Aren’t Caribbean people black?” Another wrote. “Get a grip.”

The US Air Force is spending millions to build infrastructure and upgrade airports in Africa for their unmanned drones. Maybe we can ask them to upgrade Melville Hall as a deterent to Chavez.

That idea is not so stupid as one would want believe. Take it one step further, what about attracting some US funds to counteracting not only the Chavez influence but that of the Chinese in Dominican and the Caribbean. Take it from someone who knows, it’s not so stupid.

You are partially correct, that an advertisement is just an advertisement! However, I don’t know where you reside but racism is still alive and well in the USA, New York more specifically.

        October 28, 2011

I doubt you old enough to have felt it…

        Racism is what it is
If we advance ourselves as a people instead of trying to bring each other down the moment we see ourselves rising then we can be masters but if everytime a black man see a black man rise he have to go and rob him or make a problem or wish him ill then how can we as a people advance?

So how many more years are you prepared to put in in front of you? Another 200?

Racism does exist, but never use it as an excuse to hold you back.

You would have been what we called a house negro in the slave days…looka mi massa, I such a good boy…gah!gah!gah!Gooh!Gooh!

How do you put it behind you and move on when it is institutionalized in every aspect of our lives? It is not that we are holding on to it. We are confronted by it in every walks of life. Slavery may have been abolished, but the remnants of it are alive and well. It is just camouflaged. Now, you have wage slavery. You are allowed to work for a few dollars, but half of it is taken away. You have to pay the government, financial institutions, and utility companies just so that you can live a somewhat normal life.

Why do you think 98% of the world’s population are tetering on the brink of poverty? Even those people in the so called middle class are not at ease. If they miss two months of mortgage payments, they are in jeopardy of losing their homes.

When we were freed from slavery, we were told: go out into the world, you are now free. Go where? To do what? How? We were never given the wheres, whats, and hows. We were just sent out there without any resources, education, leadership, etc. Some of us have been lucky to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, but many others have not been so fortunate.

After three hundred years of being screamed at and dehumanized, if a white man screams at me today, my right foot would find itself in the spot where the sun “don’t shine”. Seriously.

So judging from your comment, 98% of the world’s population is in slavery, I thought the caribbean was self governed by the children of former slaves

      • Dubique767
        October 28, 2011

        TO: wesleyman,

Are we really self-governed by children of former slaves? Who owns all the wealth in Waitu? Who are the puppet masters in Dominica? Who controls the resources and banking institutions. Who dictates whether you get a loan or not? It is not the clerk (child of former slave) reviewing your application…Look a little deeper, and you will realize where you stand is not as sturdy as you believe it was…

I wonder how Red Jet is going to advertise in Dominica ! Poor Dominica we cannot even compete with st.kitts. The Government wasted the money for the international airport allocated some 13yrs ago. Dominicans must take a stand and stand up! Only vote for the party who promises to build an international airport within 2 years in office. Our vote is powerful. Let’s stop playing party politics and vote for the good of the country. I am liberal!

    • Garçon a la Maison
      October 28, 2011

You are fed up and will vote for a Politician that PROMISES TO BUILD AN AIRPORT? Every politician’s modus operandi, is to promise and never deliver, why would you sell your vote for a Promise?

Don’t talk crap!! St. Kitts airport has been more of an encumbrance and liability to their government than an asset. For your information at one point the government was considering shutting down part of it because of the high cost to opperate and maintain such a large facillity especially in light of the fact that it is being under-utilized.
