Winair’s financial losses approximately US$1.5M – The Daily Herald

According to well-placed sources, the financial losses at regional airline Winair, which have been described as “significant” thus far, are approximately US $1.5 million.

Besides saying that persons with legal and aviation backgrounds have been appointed to “get a hold of the situation at Winair,” Prime Minister and Shareholder Representative of Winair Sarah Wescot-Williams has not expounded on what these persons’ findings were.

The fact-finding group is being led by Michael Ferrier and he too has not been forthcoming about how a small airline like Winair managed to accumulate US $1.5 million in losses. However, it is no secret that Winair is burdened by underperforming new routes and high monthly lease fees for its aircraft.

Winair have the best customer service, pleasant staff and prettier girls. With an attitute like this they will get there. Everything happens in time, Liat have had many losses, they still owe the government millions for bills.

get your facts straight liat is not owing dominica government millions of dollars. you seem rather one sided tho or are you just ignorant to the fact that dominica government owes liat 100s of thousands of dollars and so do many of the other caribbean govenments. just thought i should point that out to you.

This is not very good news for us. Winair only recently started night flights into Dominica. We need to know if the current financial situation affecting Winair will affect scheduled Winair flights to Dominica? Is Dominica considered one of those under performing routes?

This situation with Winair gives rise to the call for Government to seriously consider the development of an airport capable of handling long haul flights from North America and Europe. It is very clear that for our Tourism to grow (and it has the potential to do so since we have the kind of tourism product that is in demand with travellers today) we must think international air access over regional.

And yes, LIAT is here to stay. They have been tested in the best and worst of timies.

Flying the Caribbean Skies is not the easiet thing for airlines. Liat has been able to cushion heavy losses with its reputation of been one of the safest airlines on earth. No matter who or what financial backing they have Liat will be flying for 100 years more. Like it or not Liat is the way of life for all Caribbean people.. Go back and check how many airlines have tried to bring it down and failed miserably….Winair themselves tried but failed…No matter what anti-Liat government minister try they will come up short time and time again. I do sympathise with Winair but they had an opportunity to be co-partners with Liat and they didnt want that. Can’t you people see thats the way airlines should be going????…..Co and Code sharing……

  7. night landing will pay the debt?
    December 21, 2010

Is Winair that tried that commercial night landing at Melville Hall even before LIAT? Is everything in place, nuh? What was the airline proving? How often is Winair going to fly to Melville Hall nightly to cover up that debt? How much money will Winair be making? Will it be more costly or less to fly by night to Melville Hall? So airfares will rise significantly? Travelers will have to foot the higher air fares so Winair could pay back that debt or will the airline soon fold up?

many of them don’t like it but thats the reality. they all think is just come put some rediculously low fare on still run practically empty and expect to make a profit? call on mr chastenet in st lucia tell him you need an injection of cash to offset you lost. let him put his money where his mouth is.
i guess thats what they want liat to do. put on fares that will have if running at a major lost to come begging them for money so they can say liat is a cancer to the islands?

GOOD JOB LIAT. KEEP REPRESENTING. YOU FARES A GOOD AND YOU ARE RUN BY BUSINESS MINDING PPL TO THINK BEFORE THEY ACT.

While some new routes such as Dominica are performing well, the positive financial gains are offset by significant losses on routes like Tortola and Trinidad.
