Seven vibrant ladies from across the island will compete for the 2015 Mother’s Queen Title on Saturday.
The contestants are: Kendra Stephen of Newtown, Frances Lockhart of Vieille Case, Annadale Jacob from St. Joseph, Taneka Albert of Laudat, Geraldine Davis from Fond Cole, Lena Durand of Calibishie and Ellouise Ettiene representing the Kalinago Territory and Stock Farm.
They will compete in five categories: Talent, Traditional Costume, Swim Wear, Evening Wear and Question & Answer.
Organizers say the show, which is being held for the third consecutive year, is about bringing the young people together in order to highlight their talent.
Secretary Treasurer of the Carnival Mother’s Queen Show Committee, Claudine Charles, said during the weekly press conference of the Dominica Festivals Committee(DFC) that the mothers are working very hard “because we want to give people their values worth.”
Charles continued, “so it has been very tedious but the mothers I must say they were dedicated to their rehearsals and we expect that we will have something grand.”
She said the show is an opportunity for mothers to “build on their confidence and enjoy what Carnival is all about.”
One of the highlights of the show will be a presentation of aspects of Dominica’s Traditional Mas.
Charles said sponsorship which has been a challenge for the organizing committee, become a bit easier for the committee.
“Every year it is kind of getting easier because right now the Carnival Mother’s Queen is noted to be part of the Carnival celebrations, so persons have recognized that and it is becoming a bit easier, but you have to work hard to get what you want in life,” she added.
The show will feature young guest performers because, according to Charles, “we believe in portraying the talent of the young people of the county.”
Charles said the Mothers Queen Pageant Committee is negotiating to have a scholarship presented to the winner of the pageant.
“Because some of them are young mothers. They got pregnant during a time where they have to further their education, so we have been negotiating to see what we can offer the mothers at their level……this time around everybody is at a standard where they need to go to College and University so we are looking at that vantage point.”
The show is expected to take place at the Arawak House of Culture from 8:00 pm.
The reigning Carnival Mother’s Queen is Headtha Vidal of Portsmouth.
