The Saint Mary’s Academy has won the eighth annual 4H Local Dinner Plate Competition.
The winning dish—pan-seared fish in a coconut sauce, with a pineapple salsa—was prepared by Malik Darroux, Camerahn George, Zahrek Gonzalez-Peltier, and under-study Joshua Morancie.
Team leader, Malik Darroux credited their triumph to “hard work and perseverance, leadership, time management.”
He expressed the team’s gratitude to their supporters, and called the win a “relief.”
“The hard work, the nonstop hours of work, meetings, workshops. We just put everything into it and I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to them, Darroux stated. “It’s a relief. At least we know our hard work paid off.”
The team received $800.
North East Comprehensive School, represented by Donna Boland, Mervin Stewart, and Triffian Benjamin, placed second. The team prepared ‘fillet ballau with pineapple/lemon sauce and gwen pain loaf’. They were awarded $600.
In third place was the Pierre Charles Secondary School, represented by Nadine Baron, Shian Francis, and Dawn Coriette. The team prepared ‘dowad au miel avec casserole zepina’, and won $400.
All cash prizes were made possible by the Dominica Agricultural Industrial and Development (AID) Bank.
Shermar George, Shawn Esprit, and Daniele Ralph, of the Goodwill Secondary School obtained the prize for ‘Dr. Liverpool’s Choice’, in honour of the late Dr, Nicholas Liverpool. The award was presented by his wife, Verna Liverpool.
The competition was held on Saturday, at the Dominica Grammar School.
