The Dominica Basketball Association (DABA) opened the 2013 Basketball Season on the weekend at the Lindo Park Hard Court.

Addressing the function Minister of Sports, Justina Charles, pointed to her ministry’s continued support to basketball in the number of hard courts being built around the country and encouraged the association to submit plans to the ministry early when requiring assistance.

President of DABA, Mickey Joseph, restated his call for a basketball or multi purpose indoor facility to avoid the disruption to the season because of rain.

The headline sponsor LIME, through their representative Giselle Francis, reaffirmed the company’s continued support to the sport of basketball notwithstanding the difficult economy.

DABA also used the opportunity to award a number of persons who contributed to the development of basketball in Dominica, including Dave Baron (Former DABA President), Andre Charles (Former Referee and Executive Member), Russel Moreau and Leroy Dover for 25 years of service as referees and Davidson Toulon for being a member of the Dominica National team since 1992.

The ocassion was also used to hand trophies to winners of the Wilmoth Leblanc Basketball Classic and the following MVP’s: Sawana Fabien, Kelsey Guye, Lester Langlais and William Jimbo Graham.

Twenty-two teams took part in the opening parade and ballerama, which was won by Dr. Mac Prowlers.

The season will run with three separate divisions: Domlec Premier Division, Pizza Hut Delivery Division 1 and Vitamalt Division 2. It will last for about six months depending on weather conditions. The association is also expected to select a national squad to attend the Caribbean Basketball Championship and the Sugar Creole Basketball Tournament in St Kitts.

    Keep the youths occupied.. Don’t let our talent go to waste. I remember my days at Windsor Park. We had some great teams, great players even if not NBA standard but superb…an
    added activity and entertainment in the country…..

      I agree, but it’s the basketball Association to provide that schedule. They have a facebook page,they can share it there. but it’s always word of mouth, or “happen to pass and see the game on” that gets persons there.
