DOC blasts media

DOC’s Acting President, Felix Wilson

The Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) has come out swinging at the media for reports    made about the way the DOC treated Luan Gabriel, Dominica’s top female sprinter,  at the 2012 London Olympics.

During the games reports had surfaced that Gabriel was not being treated properly. According to one account, Gabriel’s aunt in London had chided the DOC for “shabby treatment of her niece.”

At a press conference on Thursday DOC officials said the 16-year-old athlete was treated in London “as a princess.”

“Luan had her own room and keys with my niece taking care of her” President of the DOC, Felix Wilson, stated.

He said he had to use his cell phone to allow her to speak to her mother.

The DOC also took issue with the media for asking why Luan’s coach, Nabi Wallace, had not accompanied her to the games. “The person who coached her left her stranded and she was taken proper care of and was treated as a princess … on a way that she has never been treated before … she experienced celebrity status in the amount of autographs she signed on her way to the games,” Wilson said.

Wilson and DOC Secretary, Thomas Dorset, who also attended the London Olympics, described stories in the media as “poorly researched, red herring comments” and it was Dorset’s view that persons seeking answers to clarify various issues were “selfish and jealous.”

He disclosed that the Committee had spent EC$300,000 on pre-games preparation and praised Darwin Telemacque, the DOC’s media representative at the games. “Darwin did an excellent job, he did justice to the Queen’s language and he was competent,” the DOC Secretary said.

I agree with one comment above. Only two athletes and so much unhappy people. How do we fix this.

Is there a protocol as to who represent Dominica at international events?

Every athlete’s COACH should accompany the athlete. A minor’s parent, if not both, should accompany the athlete. No one other than that minor’s parent, especially the mother, should be the one to take care of her child. Every athlete should be housed in the olympic village and be trained by its original trainer in order to have the confidence to perform. Luan should have her own phone, her mother’s presence, her coach, and her own money in her hand while in London. Luan should be afforded the opportunity to cherish the moment with familiar faces to boost her confidence. I hope she continues to practice so she can go to the 2016 games, and she should be able to say whom should accompany her to the games. Luan, u can do it, don’t give up your dream, and if you have to go to another country to be trained, DO IT. We have numerous athletes back home to represent us just like the other countries. Of course, not me, I’m not an athlete but I know we could be better represented in every event. People in position take too much ADVANTAGE for personal gain.

They never involved Luan’s Coach in their consultation/preparation for the Olympics and today they saying he left her stranded. Was it not the DOC PRO that said they do not recognized him as a Coach? Dominica no longer seems to a free for one to express themselves because when you do they victimize you. Luan spoke out in the chronicle and Felix Wilson take offense and attack her as being ungrateful. When Billy Doctrove ask him what are his plans for Luan at the press conference he completely swayed from asking the question stating, “they not going to put all their eggs in one basket”. Time for a change vote these liars out.

All these names mentioned there at the Olympics just saw a free ticket, per diem and so called fame flashing in their eyes so they jumped at it. What do you guys call jealousy? and Honestly, what was really the contribution of these men being up there. You are a bunch of confusion. Imagine, only one or two athletes represented DA and we have controversey, What if we had a big contingent? Mr. W is always in a tie up controversy, he needs to now rest and make new and promising blood take up their rightful positions in the sport and make their contribution. Mr. T, may have been a good spokes person but how many people he mamaguyed in London. DOMINICA learn to send reputable people to represent our country at all times.
Take a page from the USA if you are not a man of repute you either take jail or you stay out of the limelight. Let us start using persons of repute all the time PLEASE!

Luan it is important that you gained experience, better luck next time.
Our government need to set their priorities right and open the Stadium to reals sports and not just functions where they will look good. Remember the little make shit Windsor Park (Sport Centre) we had served us in all areas of sporting activites and we were much more competitive in the Caribbean and at interschool competitions. Yes I remember those days.

Now every athelete we saw doing well at the London ames had their coach there to catch them after the performance. Those who went to London did not even understand what she was there for or knew her inner ability. Grow up people.

These are the little subtle ways of corruption that have kept us behind as a small nation. Because of bickering the DOC and their conspirators would rather victimize Nabi than to get the best results from Luan. The same thing happens everyday, all the time – we oppress the desrving for political party benifits. UWP would rather write a letter to the US embassy to prevent us from getting support for an international airport; The DLP would rather destroy any appearnce of the UWP involvement in a stadium project so they would rather dump the stadium design and the material purchased for construction just to start a new Chinese stadium.

I listened to Darwin Telemaque expressing his disgust for a particular coach who was blatantly bias to an athlete because the athlete is from his area.In fact he said that the coach favored his area athlete over Luan. I agree with Darwin that such behavior is unacceptable yet Darwin was spent the better part of an hour defending the DOC decision to victimize Nabi when Nabi should have been the coach accompanying Luan. No disrespect to Hamilton.
Our population is way to small for those in authority to be so deliberate, blatantly corrupt and vindictive and expect fly by unnoticed

I am looking to see how many association are going to be at the DOC AGM. There are too many defunct sporting bodies voting in men who promise them what I do not know. According to the constitution, the body has to be active-that is active memebership, sporting activities, AGM, etc. So All bodies like Lawn Tennis, Rifle Association, Archery Association, Taekwondow if it is still on the books-should not be entitled to take part unless they have adherred to the the requiremenst. The media needs to get a copy of the DOC CONSTITUTION AND MAKE SURE THAT THINGS ARE DONE RIGHT. Doc is not here to facilitates trips and give stipends to old men who have no interest in sports development-do you see them at any sporting functions-please! It is here to facilitate the development of sports and not only when the Olympics is around the corner. It is strange that these men do not fight for position on sporting bodies where funds are not readily available to do much. Finally, we need to choose descent men and women who will not be condescending to our people and who will understand, that it is our right to question whatever goes on. We expect honest responses and not a whole lot of defensiveness.

I couldn’t have expressed it better. The DOC needs to take note. More importantly, it would be very good that a copy of the DOC’s constitution be made available to the media and public at large. Too much defensiveness. You know, I don’t think that the Acting President is telling us the whole truth. I looked at Marpin news on Thursday night and I heard the opposite to what the Ag President said. Come on, you are man enough Sir, tell the public the truth.

Blatantly using people like this and we as dominicxans sit back and run our mouth for nine days and we do nothing about it>so the sports criminals go about their business as normal, waiting in the darkness for the next prey.WHO is next? So when they fighting, they relly have to fight, because the stakes are getting bigger and bigger.Brasil next4 years. In the meantime our sports is dying a slow death.Look at the state of our sports and tell me as dominicans if we should not take charge of our own?

Mr Wilson i find is too condesending!I figure they will talk and talk for another nine days about track and their good intentions ,but it will die a natural death ,until after Brasil and then it will resurface again. Dominicans fight over everything, petty nonsense!

The focus now should be on preparation for the up and coming Olympic prospective’s; this babbling should be directed at developing training facilities thus preventing having to send people to participate in races with people who have never ran on asphalt.

Running on grass, and asphalt is different from the padded path the athletes runs on during the games.

If Luan was a guess of the International Olympic community, one would expect her to be treated the same as all the people who attended at their invitation.

That’s why in every country where the games a held they prepare living facilities to accommodate the athletes.

Why should the Dominica guest be treated differently?

As far as I know the girl ( Luan ) was happy; I communicated with someone (a Dominicaian) who met her and the waste of time guy who failed to qualify, while they were in London, and as far as I was told by the lady, they both are nice people, and were happy!

The games are long over, there are no fighting over the treatment of their athletes on any of the other islands, nor here in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere; nevertheless, as far as Dominica is concerned we must create an issue!

Here is the patios word for that ” sot zor sot. ”

Well I do not know if I got that correct; you know the kid is from Wesley, and patios is not my cup of tea, so I will do it in perhaps broken English and say stupid all-you stupid.

Stop the fighting over nonsense, and prepare Luan for her dream in Rio four years from now, that should be the goal!

What position does your NIECE hold for her to be taking care of Luan. Mr. Wilson so you are sharing the wealth your family. Isn’t there some ethic issue in there. If your niece could have dons it why couldn’t Luan’s family have?

About the cellphone bill you are trying to tell me that you all do not have or did nit receive any allowances for travelling.

You all spent money on everyone but Luan and then have her going to London and created a plot to nicely claim that her coach abandoned her to benefit you all.

Why would your niece be taking of her and having her own keys and room what do youean by that. Are you implying that she is not used to that?

See you all – Mr Wilson you need to step down for involving your niece in this. Personal interest making your family benefit for it. There is more how did you all moor the athletes receiving DoC money in preparation for the Olympics or dis you all even.

How did you all get from Wilson’s statement that Luan was not speaking to her mother? Perhaps, you all know behind-the-scenes stuff that we simple readers don’t

What I got from his statement is he allowed Luan to use his phone to call her mother…I don’t see anything wrong in that?

My only problem with his statement was why did the DOC use a small fraction of the $300 000 to give its “superstar” athlete a phone….a cheap one at least..so, she would not have to use Wilson’s phone to call her mother for him to expose her like that to the nation.

Nobody in the olympics get complimentary tickets. They all have to be paid for. I was looking at NBC and saw that one of the gold medalist swimmers from the USA parents had such bad seats because that is what they could afford. It took NBC to give them better seats in their box. Questions:

Why were the president of the DOC and all the other officials I see parading on my TV representing Dominica at the games, but only two athletes were sent to participate.

Is the Olympics games a free trip for the top brace of the Olympic committee or is it to showcase athlete talents?

Would the money spend on housing these officials be more wisely used to put towards a piece of land to build a proper stadium to train future athletes? Shouldn’t the development of improper training facilities for althletes be one of the chief objectives of the Olympic Committee as opposed to allowing the government to build a stadium for them?

If $300, 000 was spend on pre-games preparations, how much was spend for during-games activities?

Wouldn’t it be wiser for the OECS to have an OECS Olympic Team as opposed to each island parading with 2 athletes who are ill-equipped and ill-prepared to qualify for any of the games?

    August 24, 2012

I had been saying it from the onset. An investigation is necessary into this entire matter. The young lady was not ready for the olympics period. Her coach Nabi brought her up to this wonderful standard and it is because of him she got this opportunity to represent Dominica. I am curious, if his training is good enough to get her to where she is why he wasn’t allowed to be there with her. I have a few questions:
1.Why wasn’t a family member of Luan allowed to take care of her in England? Her aunt was right there she could have done the job, why is Wilson’s neice that had to do this?
    2. Who paid for Felix Wilson’s wife to accompany hil to the games? was it the IOC or was it a personal trip? and if it was personal how comes she had access to the olympuc village?
    3. Why wasn’t Luan’s family given the free tickets to go see her and to accompany her to the events. They had to pay to go to the opening, why is that?
    4. In the history of Olympics where have you ever heard that a country chooses a coach to accompany an athlete that he didn’t train?
    5. Did Hurtault have to regard Joey as his coach? I think not because his coach accompanied him from the states. So why was Nabi left down?
    6. out of the $300 000 spent why coundn’t the DOC get proper athlete clothes and track shoes for Luan for the games? why is it she had to use the same clothes she did carifta games with? We should be ashamed
    7. Why wasn’t Brandan Williams who missed the mark by 3cm given a chance to go to the olympics and receive a chance at the hits like Luan?

And I would really appreciate a response to these questions…

      7. Why wasn’t Brandan Williams who missed the mark by 3cm given a chance to go to the olympics and receive a chance at the hits like Luan?

Answer: In order for that to have happened the DOC would have had to request a special exemption since the IOC does not allow unqualified athlete in the field events. I guess they were not willing to put in the work…Brendan has talent and could have shine on that stage…

The rest of the questions needs investigating..

Just my two cents having been very involved in athletic administration at one point. An coach can be chosen to accompany a team if he is capable. Mnay top athlete are able to have their coaches accompany them, but generally the the Athletic Association should chose the coach to accompany the team. Nabi is very very capable, but so is Joe. Nabi should however, have been allowed to be more involved in the preparation stage of the athlete. The DOC tried its best to the turn the athlete against the coach but there is a God. These men on teh DOC are just a group of opportunist. They don’t care about athletes, they care about travel-that”s it! The bulk of preparation mon ey was spent on getting boxers ready. An athlete like Brendan should never have been allowed to com bak to Dominica for all that time after he left Cuba. Some other training facility should have been found and he should have been been multiple opportunities for training and competing to ensure he made the games. Finally, Luan participation at the World Junior Champs as far as I know was made possible through the IAAF. The IAAF provides the airfare, etc. for the qualified athlete. The DOC may have paid the costof the coach’s ticket, but not the athlete.

      1. Why wasn’t a family member of Luan allowed to take care of her in England? Her aunt was right there she could have done the job, why is Wilson’s niece that had to do this? And 2. Who paid for Felix Wilson’s wife to accompany him to the games? Was it the IOC or was it a personal trip? And if it was personal how comes she had access to the Olympic village?
Well the Government has to be more careful who they send out as their representatives to such important events, These national forums has now turned out to be family affairs as everyone is trying to see how they can enjoy the moments with their families and forget national interests. A new precedence seems to have been set and GOVERNMENT has to clamp it down NOW.
Recently I turned on my Facebook page and saw a young guy from Portsmouth flashing his photos of his visit to Korea. His mom was chosen to represent a certain government Office in Korea and instead of allowing another staff member to be representing the country in Korea she chose her son. Let us be honest, what skills did he take to that Expo? What skills did she have for that Expo? Knowing what the office stands for. This is one of the most important offices in Dominica and the Minister should look into this matter. The individual was employed to look after the interest of staff in her capacity as HR, she is there looking for the interest of her family. What Government Minister actually approved for this to happen? And what monies were used to take this guy there? An investigation must be done to track the transfer of funds. As a God fearing person, dishonesty is not the way to go. God hates this, so next time you are at the altar say a prayer for you. No Private sector company would allow this type of behavior at all.

Disappointed but not surprised. The cover up that came from Darwin and the utter nonsense from Wilson makes the DOC even more suspicious.

Why is Wilson’s niece the one taking care of the athlete? If it was intended to make Luan absolutely comfortable why not allow her family to take care of her.

Another factor that is rather suspicious is the silence on Errison’s coach. Darwin while trying to justify the victimization of Nabi forgot that he reported that Errison’s coach was with him. So did the DOC paid for Errison’s coach? Considering that Hamilton was selected 9 months ago and that Luan was supposedly attending the event as an observer the question is why was there a need for a second coach in Brian Hamilton when Errison already had his own coach

  24. Cerberus
    August 24, 2012

If there is a red herring it is mr. Wilson’s attempt to create a diversion by concentrating on the personal circumstances of luan Gabriel, which is deplorable.

    – He states that E.C.$300, 000 were spent on preparations for the Olympic games. I would like him to explain where, how and when this money was spent. It certainly did not go into preparing Luan for the Olympics, who’s participation was not confirmed until after the games had actually started. How much money went in securing Erison Hurtault- and his trainer’s services?
    – The fact remains that Luan was neither ready, nor qualified to participate based on her performance. Just prior to the Olympics she took part in the IAAF Junior championships in Barcelona on 12 July, where she came fourth in heat 6 of the 200 mts. with a time of 24.65 and did not qualify for the semi-finals.
    – As far as Cerberus knows, she made the visit to Barcelona in the care of Cedric Harris of the DAAA in preference to her personal trainer Nabi, a decision which in itself was a bone of contention. What happened to Mr. Harris after Barcelona? Did he accompany Luan to London? If he was good enough for Barcelona why not use him for the London Olympics also?
    – The participation of Mr. Telemaque as a member of the DOC delegation, if funded by the DOC, puts into question the neutrality of his reporting. Sincere as he may be there would always be the maxim in the public’s mind:”He who pays the piper, calls the tune”
    – Last but not least. What happened to the tickets allocated to the DOC? Were any offered for sale, either locally or to Dominicans in the diaspora and in particular the U.K.?

    • Homeboy
      August 24, 2012

All valid points but as far as tickets go there was an announcement more than 1.5 years ago when individuals from various countries would put in a Request then whoever the ticket distribution outlet was ( for the USA it was COSPORT ).. They then decided on the amount to allow each individual to purchase. I bought tickets for the games then.

People who are paid to take care of the public affairs are simply to engrossed in their own personnal agenda.too much corruption in high and low places and the root of the problem must be tackled in orthet to provide solutions

So I guess Mr Wilson that your niece was one who received the complimentary tickets that Luan should have received so that she could bring along someone or two with her? Your are becoming obvious. I am so disappointed in you as a fellow-Portsmouth resident.

Mr. Felix that, and I quote: “Darwin did an excellent job, he did justice to the Queen’s language and he was competent,” the DOC Secretary said.

You mean it is because the poor man could not speak the Queen’s English, they abandoned the poor country boi??? Well sah! Only in Dominica can you be so insulted.

Nabi who is very eloquent , calm and poised could have also done the job that Darwin did. Nabi speaks well and is certainly unafraid of the spotlight.
NABI the little boy of Nita and Murphy you are my hero son. They cannot put a good man down. It seems like those in authority simply refuse to accept honesty. Tell them as it is. While they are trying destroy Nabi they are complaining that Nabi is too forthright and blunt.

  35. Stranded
    August 24, 2012

Well , among other things in this story from DNO, I also saw an accusation by Mr. Felix stating that the young lady was left stranded by the person who coached he , meaning Nabi Wallace. What I did not see was , any evidence or indication by Mr Felix as to how was Miss Luan was left stranded by her coach.

This is a national issue and I think We the public , should be entitled to some facts as to what happened or in what way was Luan abandoned by her coach. This would not only clear the air and stop all the speculations but also justify the DOC’S decision in not allowing Mr Wallace to travel to London as the young athlete’s coach.

DNO , CAN YOU ASSIST IN THAT REGARD?

  36. Felex
    August 24, 2012

That Sounds empty wi Felix. Her winning trainer Nabbi wasn’t there, your neice was there, smells of defunct stuff going on. Ebeh look ting…and D/a planning to throw money at olympics in that kind of atmosphere??

Yep you are right. This had no place there. It was of very poor taste. But if he was looking for some self glorification , then we understand. For Luan’s sake and for a better future for her as an athlete, I think she should get away from these people and this country.

    August 23, 2012

Felix Wilson sounds very defensive, there was no need to bring up the part of having to use his cell phone to let her speak to her mother etc.

DOC needs to do some serious introspection as part of the way forward. Some persons think that the DOC is an inner-circle thing thereby excluding others. Let us do what is best for our people.

  45. CIA on the watch
    August 23, 2012

Mr Wilson i thought you would be more sensitive than that as one who dealt with kids as a principal, what has Luan not on speaking terms with her mom address the issue at hand, The fundamental Question is Why is it that the coach whom the athlete is use to was not given the opportunity, Mr wilson for a grown up and so called intelligent person all what i read in this article is pure reproach to Luan who you call princess, if it is lawful the Government must consider dessolving this olympic committee, Dominica olympic committee will get no where with Felix Wilson, too much confusion and mepois by this guy and yes Darwin got a free ticket compliments DOC to sing the song of DOC

    • Roz
      August 24, 2012

Not just reprachful alone. That is condescending as well, and a bit on the sexist side. For a man of his experience and social standing, past principal of a prominent school, current administrator of a tertiary institution, his tone is quite insulting. He should know better than that!

“Luan had her own room and keys with my niece taking care of her … she was taken out and I also had to use my cell phone to make her speak to her Mom who she was not on speaking terms with for a long time,” President of the DOC, Felix Wilson, stated.

Seriously Mr. DOC President…She was Dominica’s only female athlete with a team of males, i would hope that she had her own room..

Answer these questions: Did the princess know that she had complimentary tickets for her family in London?

Did you send an email to your niece so that she could access a link, click on “the princess name to access free tickets?
There should be an investigation carried out on the Dominica Olympic Committee and their action pre, and during the Games… So Mr. Acting Whatever, put up or shut-up. What happens in the dark will come out to light…

    August 23, 2012

    This article is pure rubbish.

“Luan had her own room and keys with my niece taking care of her … she was taken out and I also had to use my cell phone to make her speak to her Mom who she was not on speaking terms with for a long time,”

Is this really the measure of treating her like a “princess?” The young lady should have her own room, and should have been taken out to experience the festivities (that’s not extraordinary). And what relevance is it to this story that she and her mother were not on speaking terms? NONE!

The real story should be an interview with the young lady herself telling us about her experience at her first Olympic Games. I pray for many more for her and our beautiful country.
