Amid spectacular fireworks the 2014 Winter Olympic Games ended in Sochi, Russia on Sunday.

The atmosphere was pure celebration which featured ballet from the Bolshoi, music by Rachmaninov and tributes to Tolstoy and Kandinsky.

The event was one of the most expensive games in history with Russia spending about US$51-billion to build the venue and all what went with it.

International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, desecribed the games as “a real special experience”.

The Olympic flag was handed over by Sochi’s mayor to the mayor of Pyeongchang, South Korea, host of the next Winter Olympics, in four years.

Russia led the way with overall medal count at 33. The US was second with 28 medals.

Dominica’s foray into the Sochi Olympics did not go very well.

Gary di Silvestri and his wife Angelica, who have Dominican citizenship, represented the island.

Reports indicate Gary contracted acute bacterial gastrointeritis after showering and brushing his teeth in brown water.

He got out of the hospital in time to take part in the 15- kilometer men skiing classic but collapsed after the first lap. He did not finish the race and was classified as DNF (Did Not Finish).

His wife fared no better. She reportedly crashed into a fence during practice for the 10-kilometer women classic and broke her nose. She did not even start the race and was classified as DNS (Did Not Start).

Please note that the Olympic standings are issued according to the Gold Medal count followed by the Silver Medal Count and finally by the Bronze Medal count and not by Total medal count. For Example, Germany and Netherlands both have 8 gold, but Netherlands is ranked in 5th position where as Germany takes the 6th position because Netherlands got 7 Silver while Germany Got 6 silver. As per the Official 2014 Sochi Olympic site (http://www.sochi2014.com/en/medals) the standings are as follows:

Rank Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
    1 Russia 13 11 9 33
    2 Norway 11 5 10 26
    3 Canada 10 10 5 25
    4 United States 9 7 12 28
    5 Netherlands 8 7 9 24
    6 Germany 8 6 5 19
    7 Switzerland 6 3 2 11
    and so on.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks.
