Grenada defeats Dominica; wins Windward Islands 20/20 Championship

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — Grenada won the Windward Islands Twenty20 Championship in Dominica on Sunday, defeating the hosts by 77 runs at the Windsor Stadium, after winning the toss and setting a challenging total of 156 for 5 off 20 overs.

Devon Smith was run out for 79 on the final ball of the innings but after sharing an important fifth wicket partnership of 103 runs with Tade Carmichael, who made 44 off 36 balls. Captain Andre Fletcher made 16.

In reply, Dominica found a resilient Grenada and only survived 14.5 overs in totaling 79 with John Olive and Nelon Pascal each taking three wickets and two wickets apiece for Eamon Alexander and Ronald Ettienne.

Grenada’s Sports Minister Patrick Simmons said that the performance of the national team again demonstrates the important role sports continue to play in the daily life of our people.

“Sports continue to be a unifying force and our sportsmen are playing their role whether it’s in athletics, football, cricket or any other sport,” he said.

“They showed that they were compact in all areas of the game and this performance is a good sign that our cricketers continue to improve”.

Also extending congratulations to the national cricket team is one of Grenada’s ace runners, Kirani James. In a brief message, James, who is ardent cricket fan, said “congrats to the team”.

Smith was named Most Valuable Player of the Championship. Among the other individual awards for Grenada, Smith had the most runs while Denis George had the best bowling figures.

The victory and performance of Smith came two days after the death of his father.

Its rather regrettable that we tend to spend so much energies at attempting to bring down our fellowmen. Liam is not a perfect being but he is possessed of some tremendous qualities and has been quite a good ambassador of Dominica and the region.

I went to the games and was not totally pleased with some of his tactics and at the same time I never doubted his commitment towards the team and country. Yes he did made some errors but that is the nature of the game no sport can have excitement without errors. Yet many of us wanted to bring down the grace of God on this talented Dominican cricketer and think it is the biggest crime that he is getting to full support of his illustrious dad Lockhart Sebastien a regional cricketing icon! If I was in Sebo position i would not have done it any differently!

So let us be sensible and objective whenever Liam does well how many of us Call the radio stations or write an article in support! Give this youngman a break. He has a lot of promise and is well respected within the sub region and is educated and considered to be a serious role model. So while we condemn our youths there is one who has great but imperfect qualities and must be encouraged.

So this is my little five cents piece I am still baffled that he continued to bowl when things were nt going his way 4-40 will stay on my mind but I will not hold it against it i reckon this is cricket. This was a bad tournament for him but there is something in him which the selectors saw that got him on the west indies youth team which lost in the junior world cup finals!

So LIAM DO USE THIS EXPERIENCE TO STRENGTHEN YOU! OUR PEOPLE ARE NOT EASY! DONT LOK FOR ANY PRAISES IN FAILURE! OUR FOLKS ARE PERFECTIONIST AND GOOD AT BLAMING OTHERS AND NEVER THEMSELVES! THEY DO LOVE THE GAME AND HAVE A GREAT AND SOMETIMES FANATICAL UNDERSTANDING OF IT. SO SOME OF THE COMMENTS THAT ARE DIRECTED AT YOU MAY NOT REALLLLY BE PERSONAL BUT THEIR ARE POCKETS OF JEALOUSY AND DISRESPECT. DO HAVE AN OPEN MIND AND BE POSITIVE FOR GOD HATH BLESSED YOU.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO CONDUCT YOUR AFFAIRS BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD IN A DIGNIFIED MANNER! STAY A WAY FROM CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENTS AND BE CAREFUL WITH THE MASS MEDIA! LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE!

WHENEVER I MEEET YOU I WILL LET YOU KNOW ITS ME WHO WROTE THIS LITTTLE PIECE AND I SHALL BE TELLLING YOUR MUM ABOUT IT AT THE DSS!

DOMINICA WAS LUCKY TO GET THE SILVER MEDAL.THEY WENT IN THE GAME WITH A TEAM THAT LACKED TRUE STRENGTH .FIRST THEIR BOWLING ATTACK WAS VERY WEAK. A CRICKET TEAM SHOULD HAVE A BALANCED BOWLING ATTACK. THE D/A TEAM ONLY HAD SPINNERS, AND FROM WHAT I SAW THE SPINNERS BOWLED MORE SOFT BALLS THAN SPINS.DON’T WE HAVE ANY PACE BOWLERS IN DOMINICA?WE NEED A PACE BOWLER LIKE GRENADA’S DYNAMITE ‘N PASCAL’.

THE FIELDING WAS JUST SHABBY.THE PLAYERS FUMBLED ALL THE TIME. INSTEAD OF STOPPING BALLS THEY ALLOWED THEM TO GO TO THE BOUNDARIES. THERE WERE MANY OVERTHROWS AND DROP-CATCHES.
TO MAKE MATTERS WORST, THESE PLAYERS ALLOWED THEIR OPPONENTS TO AMASS A GREAT AMOUNT OF RUNS THAT THEY COULD CHASE.

GRENADA WITH ALL THEIR SKILLS EXPOSED THE WEAKNESS OF OUR DOMINICAN CRICKETERS. THE MANAGER, COACH, AND SELECTORS SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.

as CAPTAIN the responsibility rests in his shoulders… although we lost both games against Grenada, the first game was a much better game. the only performance i did not like was that of the CAPTAIN.

in the finals i will agree that it was a collective team effort that lost us the match.

Yes I was at all the games. Whilst Liam’s bowling figures for the first match was 40 runs for 4 overs, that is 24 balls. But let us take a critical look at the mis-fields from Liam’s bowling and we will see the entire team faulted.

Lets not blame one man. My point is, let us take this defeat and ride the storms so that we can become a better team. That’s all. I am of the opinion that we are too negative a people.

We always try to blame people. The entire team failed, not only Liam. If we looked at Liam bowling we will see how many drop catches there were. Were all of Liam’s bowling hit to boundaries (sixes and fours) no, the players did not play like they were defending a championship.
We criticize too much, instead let us look at were we failed and try to improve on the short comings. Grenada has 4 players who were given exposure on the west Indies team, Fletcher, Smith, Pascal and Carmichael. The Grenadian players used their experience to their advantage together with Dominica’s poor fielding and poor bating. There was no stability of the bating of Dominica game last night. Although Dominica lost on Friday night they play and they fought for the game. Last night their mentality was totally different, they gave up right from the start. So lets stop playing the blame game and lets try to develop the young guys.
Let make good use of the internet and search Liam to have a good look at his statistics. And mark you, I do not know Liam nor his father, i just think we need to give the talented young players a BREAKKKKKKKK.

Now lets take a look at Liam’s statistics. This site gives stats on Liam. It is quite interesting, please check it out. http://www.espncricinfo.com/westindies/content/player/53119.html
