Nightmare for TnT Women Cricket team

The WICB Regional Women’s Super50 Tournament, which took place in Dominica, ended on Wednesday but for the team from Trinidad and Tobago, the experience has not been a pleasant one.

As a matter of fact, the team’s stay on the island was described as terrible and some members thought that coming to take part in the tournament was probably not a good idea.

Their nightmare began when the room of two members of the team was broken into at a local hotel, documents and money were stolen and no one appears to have the right answers to assist.

With only one day left in Dominica, the two team members affected are desperate to get a police report so the documents can be replaced upon return to Trinidad.

Stacy-Ann King, a senior member of the team and also a player for the West Indies Women Team, told DNO the team got into Dominica on Tuesday evening, July 5 and settled in their hotel.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, someone entered the room of two players through a window and stole cash, important documents and jewelry.

Although passports were not stolen and traveling back to Trinidad will not be affected, documents such as ID Cards and driver’s license were taken and having them replaced in their home country will pose a problem without a police report.

King said a report was made and the police promised to visit on Monday (August 11) but they turned up on Tuesday, only to say they brought the wrong report.

“We are still waiting,” she stated. “I don’t know how it is possible to bring the wrong report. They left and to this day we haven’t seen them as yet. We are expected to return to Trinidad tomorrow and we are left in a predicament.”

She remarked that the Dominica Cricket Board has been of little or no assistance in the matter.

“They came, they listened to everything we had to say and that was it,” King noted.

DNO made several attempts to contact the PRO of the Dominica Cricket Board, Mervin Paul, but his phone rang without an answer.

Attempts to contact Police PRO, assistant superindent Claude Weekes, on Wednesday evening also proved futile.

Meanwhile King said the team has been traumatized by the experience and is disappointed by the “terrible treatment” they received.

“Everything has been terrible and now that the tournament is over, they are not helping the situation,” she said.

A proper investigation should be conducted. It could be anyone. A member of their own team, hotel employee or an outsider. Most hotels have security and CCTV. So before we go making all these negative criticism about Dominica we must bear in mind that it is the onus of the players to secure properly their personal items and room upon leaving. Am sorry for their loss however, they have but themselves to be blame to for such unfortunate incident.

Who knows? Let us hope it was not internal or a guest who did that. The police must look into all avenues and possibilities. I hope from the moment they were notified that they immediately commenced the investigation into this matter.

“In the early hrs of Thursday morning” Really unfortunate situation for the T&T ladies, in reference to their accommodation, they should have complained in the beginning not at the end so that could be addressed. In reference to the police report, the police is not obligated to issue any report upon request ESPECIALLY if there is an ongoing investigation. Although given the circumstances surrounding the incident a prelim report may be issued and upon conclusion an official report which can be faxed directly to the authority(s) responsible. And no, police reports are not done instantly …………..on that note I must mention that as much as I appreciate/respect persons opinions, crime of all degrees are growing everywhere, some places have not yet adjusted with time. These situations may be new to DA but I don’t see the need for all that negativity. AND SOME OF YOU, PLEASE DONT TRY TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU LIVING IN A PERFECT. WORLD

Immortal What nonsense – they should complained from the beginning? – from the beginning we should have made such our guest were comfortable and safe – the teams should have had a laison officer and a security officer ; that is unacceptable if we want our Dominica to be competitive; on the issue of the police no excuse – the police came they investigated they promised a report but brought the wrong report- again what foolishness/ from the onset tell the victim that you are not in position to give a report at this time but do not promise one and then bring the wrong one – total rubbish and we must not write in support of this poor service – they are our guest and therefore we were obliged to give high standard service. Think of it when they out there with that impression of Dominica who knows how much damage that can do to our marketability as a destination. As for the cricket association well thats a shame down right shame – to have left the team to fend for themselves – really poor overall.

Upon reading this news on DNO, it is sad that something like that has happen and continue to take place in Dominica, but I read the first paragragh which says this “The WICB Regional Women’s Super50 Tournament, which took place in Dominica, ended on Wednesday but for the team from Trinidad and Tobago, the experience has not been a pleasant one.” then second paragragh says “As a matter of fact, the team’s stay on the island was described as terrible and some members thought that coming to take part in the tournament was probably not a good idea.” hmmm…

The laws regarding theft need to be amended to include tougher punishment. The other thing is that it is petty thieves who eventually evolve to bigger ones. If someone steals from you call him out. Police take the job seriously, I was a victim of a robbery recently and know first hand how you feel. If your brother, sister, cousin who ever the case may be, comes with something you know they got through some questionable means, Dominicans let us call them out on it and if they refuse to take it back call the police. It will only be a matter of time till someone is no longer to take it any more or someone tries to rob the wrong tourist and get killed and you know what we will do then, blame the tourist for the murder.

Visitors, Tourist and Dominicans living overseas and visiting are being targeted and victimized. A couple of us were living with a relative while visiting for Carnival ’14 and there were two attempts to burglarize the house.
It is time that all resources be brought to address this problem! It is the same ones commiting these crimes, and just a handfull of them but they could bring an end to the Tourist Indusrty. They have to be targeted and put away but the police alone will not succeeed; the public help is needed.
The Caribbean Carnival here is two weekends away and already the police are picking up every little Hoodlum with an outstanding warrant!

Sorry about this but hotels have security safe why wasn’t the documents and valuables be put in the safe? Why is the police report not ready? Could it be that the police are suspicious that it was not a rubbery?

    • BS
      August 14, 2014

you right it was not a rubbery, it was a robbery and if they (Police) are suspicious, that does not give them the right to end the case just like that, they need to question the team properly!

Whatever the case be, by reading your comments on other subject matters as well as this one, I can tell you are not a PREACHER of the gospel of Christ. If anything, you must be a preacher of Skerrit, who is only anointed to defend corruption and promote ungodliness.

Shame on the police and the local organizers. To the police: this is a very elementary request, no excuse. To the organizers: poor reflection on you and the sport and Dominica. This is a very unfortunate incident, but by no means as bad as it gets. If we cannot deal with such in an empathetic, considerate and urgent way, how could we have dealt with a more major emergency, god forbid if that happened. Will Dominica be chosen for the next such event?Visiting sportsmen, and artists have reason to be concerned in the future. What about the repercussions to tourists? Why didn’t the hotel show some initiative either to at the very least help get the report? Shame, shame!

That is very unfortunate. So sorry. These things happen all over the world and is rear in Dominica. Let us stop being negative and giving Dominica and the wrong people fire. You teach people to fish and they will not still people’s fish. You give them hand out and when handout is finished and bills are left unpaid, they will still from hotels, from tourists, the Pm, from the airport when Haitians pay their money, from the rich and from the poor. The system is bad and corrupt and that results in lawlessness. By the way I guess those thieves know that when they still money they usually get promoted anyways

  29. RED CAP LABEL
    August 14, 2014

The root cause of this problem and all the ills this nation is plagued with in recent times is that of lawlessness, injustice, to the point that everyone is afraid to execute their responsibility. But here again is the same connection: Isn’t Nanton, the vice president of West Indies cricket? Isn’t he advisor and what not of Skerrit? Isn’t Mervin Paul the PRO of Dominica cricket? Isn’t he also everything of Skerrit? Isn’t the police owned by Skerrit and officers are under serious manners and fear? Unless we get rid of the root problem things will just continue to get worse and worse like in Cuba, Venezuella, Iraq, Iran, and other communist countries.

i am so sorry to hear that our Dominican people are sinking so low to steal from a bunch of vulnerable women. i believe that the police needs to be more vigilant and brring the culprits in. It does not go down well they already think that Dominica lacks in all aspects to put that one on us again. It means trouble and then the government will get the blame, the police needs to be more active. Whilst on vocation in DA our cameras were stolen and my friend was alo the victim of a mugging and to date tghis is 3 years ago despite reporting to the police we did not hear from them, this is bad do your job that is waht you are paid for not to beat people to death.
If we are going to priomote DA we need to come better than that.

I feel it for the Trinis but in their country doh have vollaire.

I am saddened to read of the theft. Did they leave the window opened? Or did someone break and enter through the window?
Thank God they were not hurt. However, their documents are important. I can imagine their disappointment and anguish over this and that the police has yet to show up with the correct report.
The thief has created a bad name for Dominica. Know that the news is already broadcasted in T & T. It is someone who knew they were in D/ca and also knew where they were staying. What a shame the person had to do something like that? Visitors cannot visit D/ca without people as you stealing from them?
The Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ is upon you. Our Lord said “Vengeance is mine. I will repay.”
It is a grievous sin to stealing from others and cause them such anxiety. You thief, heartless person, you will not escape His wrath. Wait, see and experience it. May His vengeance be swift upon you, for stealing the possessions of these visitors, putting them through this and for giving Dominica a bad reputation.
