Player punches referee during match: DFA cries foul

The Dominica Football Association (DFA) has condemned an act of violence which occurred during a football match over the weekend.

Public Relations Officer of the DFA Gerald George told Dominica News Online that the incident occurred during a Premier Division game in Dublanc between Starin and Sons St. Joseph and the Quickzone team. George said that a senior national player from the St Joseph team punched the referee, Ibrahim “Sign Man”Brohim, three times after he made a call that was not in his favour. The game had to be called off following this violent outburst, George said.

The PRO reiterated that the association does not condone such behaviour and will not take the matter lightly. He called for greater discipline amongst players.

George informed DNO tha the association is presently awaiting a report from the referee to begin investigations into the matter.

i,m not going to condone what he did, it was wrong……

but what i find is for a place like dominica that have no real foot ball tradation, where there is no real pro league, where u break your foot representing your village

5 years is wayyy too much time for a ban… at least 6 months . u go to other big countries where players get so much money to play and they only give 1year off for such behivior.

if u dont play football for 6 months, u lose so much riddim, 5 years is wayy to much

and for the ppl with all their negative vibz, waht have youll dont to help football grow in dominica.

ohh and as for dem reffs, out of dominica pure nonsence they do when they go and refree big fifa matches,

My name is abdul,I am from Africa, I played with Delbert for years, I must say he is a very intelligent player, This situation can happen to anybody in FOOTBALL. Sometimes we players react in a very quick way, I think the Dominica football leaders should consider that it a mistake, am sure Delbert has already appologise to the refere for his action. I hope the DFA handle this matter in a professional way. Delbert is a role model for young players, everybody makes mistake, no one is perfect, am sure he regret and wants to put this situation behind him. Again he is a fair player and he has been a loyal footballer to the Dominica National team. I hope all this come to pass as sooon as possible.

To the deco person im really touch about ur story how the guy has helped u from being in jail right now.i kno he have taught many young boys in st joe 2 stay away from drugs and violents. i have known him 4 many years playin 4 dominica with guys like goergie, derwin and even st joe own shane marshall. that guy is one funny guy…anytime in training he would always make players laugh. in all the years he have played 4 dominica i have never heard anyone say that he is a bad player but now that he made a mistake that not even me support everybody want 2 bring down the guy. wen he was playin in america i never heard anyone talk about him like how im hearin now…oh how we can make players be popular wen they do bad but wen they do good they never make u famous.
i saw st joe play in the stadium and i was shocked at how well they play. in all my years playin against st joe i have neva seen them play so good. no disrespect 2 roy marshall, shane marshall and the rest before but this st joe team has guys that no noe has seen or even heard about and the dailey brothers without a coach on there team has done so much. i heard that they r the ones coachin the team and look at how well the team is. we should try 2 forgive people wen they do wrong that guy has done 2 much 2 help young boys and girls in st joe and even in dominica 2 be better young people. ALL WAT HE DID ALREADY NOT EVEN DFA HAS DONE IT.

AND TOO ALL THOSE WHO DONT KNOW WAT HAPPEN 2 THIS PLAYER HAS HAPPEN HERE IN D/CA BEFORE AND DFA NEVER BRING IT OUT LIKE THAT. JUST BECUZ IT BROHIM THEY MAKIN IT A BIG THING. BECUZ BROHIM GIVIN THEM THINGS. THEY FORGET PEOPLE HIT MARTIN AND CARLIE JNO BAPTISTE AND NO ONE TALK.

I think Delbert was having a very bad day i have captained
on the national youth and his probably one of the most disciplined players i have met. If there is a punishment i do not think it should be severe.

to all dem people that tryin 2 see d fella go down….keep it up. thats ur job being a true hater and a true dominican. maybe its becuz u all have tried 4 years 2 have his positions on the national team or even his job and u all could get it. i have known that guy 4 many years and he has really contributed 2 football in dominica and he has made a mistake and we forget all wat he have done and we branding him like thats how he is. so many professionals have made mistakes like him and they come out and say sorry taking dere punishment and continue with their work in football….why cant we jus treat him like the rest. why r we trying 2 send a young talented man who has made a mistake for his first time go 2 jail and lose his job. we in dominica have no heart. i just cant understand someone that has been good all the time who is not perfect and one mistake we want 2 send him down the drain. I know that he is sorry 4 wat happen, let us dont try 2 take the guy job and talkin about jail.

watever bad they wish u dont worry son their own is coming soon…
keep ur head up… your r the best defender in dominica and thats a fact.

This was very inappropriate behaviour and i am sure guys look up to him.
Put him on probation. Six Months should be alright.
This player should issue a public apology to the refree, the youth and all the people looking up to him.
He can save himself if he does the responsible thing and apologise.

When I heard who did the act I was quite surprise. He is a humble guy and a good example to other players.
One of the few guys playing football from our youth teams. I have no idea what went up to his head. I don’t believe ppl are really calling for jail time for a young man.
So in Dominica is 1 strike and you are out. So all the good he has done over the years has gone for nothing.
I hope the officials are rational when handing down judgement.
I think he needs to apologise to Brohim, DFA, football fans and be banned for some games. I hope he and Brohim can settle outide of court.
It would be a real shame to see his football career end over this incident.
Delbert my brother hold strong, reflect on your actions. Not eveyone is sending you under the bus. I hope you come out stronger from this incident.
I still have respect for u my boy.

what the player did was worng.he is a good player and person people do make mistake and that was his,we are to quick to judge people in d.a.i think he should be band for at list a year.i dont think that we should be attacking the man job,we have sport teachers drinking, smoking and doing all sorts of things so we have to be carefull what we say when it comes to discipline.

  19. longspoon
    January 12, 2010

to have a job in dominica you have to respect people and thats discipline to raise a child you need discipline to drive a car you need discipline 95% of things you do you need discipline when a situation like that happen it need to stop immediately and for this to happen some form of stern action need to be taken against this man my views on the action taken is he has to be tried in the court for assault and be banned from all sports not officiating or training whatsoever and that would send a clear message to all people involved in sport

It’s a shame that this had to happen….

I think drug testing should be implemented even at these levels in order to encourage more responsible behavior by these young men…

I also believe he should be made a very stern example of for this should be seen as a very serious matter…..

Such behaviour has no place in such sports and should be condemed by all…

This young man has no excuse….he needs some anger management therapy before kicking a ball at this level again….

Please young people stop taking the marijuana and cocaine…these things are really not good you know.

DFA…please keep him on the outside looking in for a good while.

    Peace..

LET IT BE SAID AND CLEARLY …MY YEARS PLAYING SPORTS AT SMA THEN POTTERS NEVER CAME CLOSE TO EVEN A VERBAL RESPONSE TO AN OFFICIAL .WE WERE NOT ONLY TAUGHT DISCILINE AT SMA BUT BRED INTO DISCIPLINE.THIS ACT IS ONE OF THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS ACTS I’VE WITNESSED IN DOMINICAN FOOTBALL IN RECENT TIMES.CRIMINAL CHARGES SHOULD BE LEVELLED AGAINST THIS INDIVIDUAL AND THE DFA SHOULD IMPOSE NOTHING LESS THAN A LIFETIME BAN ON HIM….NOTHING LESS!!

BROHIM , IT HURTS TO SEE YOUR YEARS OF DEDICATED AND COMMITTED SERVICE BEING TRASHED BY SOME IRRESPONSIBLE FOOL.

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP BROHIM, THE FOOLS WILL BE FORCED TO MAKE THE KINGS LAUGH…

LET ME FIRST SAY THAT ITS A SHAME THAT THIS GUY IS A NATIONAL PLAYER,A SPORTS OFFICER ATTACHED WITH THE MINISTRY AND HE HAS AN ACADEMY.BUT MOST OF ALL HE WAS ONE ON THE RADIO A YEAR OR SO AGO SAYING THAT FOOTBALLERS HERE NEED TO RAISE THEIR LEVEL TO IMPROVE THE GAME.WE ALL KNOW THAT REFS MAKE BAD CALLS AT TIMES AS A FORMER NATIONAL PLAYER I HAVE SEEN THAT MANY TIME S BUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SUCH BEHAVIOR.THE DISCIPLINARY WILL FIND SOME LOOP HOLE TO LET HIM OFF WITH A SOFT BAN. IN MY OPINION HE SHOULD BE BANNED FOR NO LESS THAN 15 YRS.LET HIM THINK OF FOOTBALL FROM HIS HOME.

    THAT MUST HURT;
For a man likeBrohim, who dedicated his talent for such a long time, to officiate, this should not be tolerated. The association must make a clear example of this player,to hit a Ref; three times ? not once; not twice;three times?that un aceptable.
Brohim my partner, if i were you, i would rethink where i go and reffree, and asked for protection in the future. I always look forward in seeing you at the calypso shows, when i come down,. I hope you were not seriously hurt, i wish you well, and JAH Protection in the future.

  28. January 12, 2010

I’m glad to see we’re all taking a stance on this. First of this should be considered an assault and appropriate changes applied, then the Football association should take their own action against him. Very poor sportsmanship on his end.

    Aaargh Niceness,

Maybe you’re right, most of us are just so downright outraged at this extreme behavior, we’re came out shooting from the hip. Perhaps he could use that incident to steer upcoming kids from the “coward gangsta mentality”. However, he would have to realize the seriousness and stupidity of his act thru some kind of counseling, but we must remember this ain’t foreign, this home and we ain’t gat all that juice to check for that yut, so maybe an indefinite ban till he realize the impact of what he did.

Players fight among themselves in games every once in a while, understandable, but to punch a referee is to take that to bad man gangsta level and that don’t mix at all with competitive ball. Anyone ever heard of a player name Puddin, did the same thing, that’s why I’m trippin.

    Nice looking out Niceness.

  32. January 12, 2010

Spokes you have to ban this guy for a very long time..

  33. niceness
    January 12, 2010

Players like this should be suspended, counciled and fined for his behavior, I dont think he should be jailed or ban from the game we are all human and sometimes things get to us, we all make mistakes but at the same time mistake like this should not be taken likely, if they are fined and suspended for a curtain amount of games and counciled they will understand that these kind of behavior is not tolarated, and will be able to come out a better person in the end.

To many times we as a people first want jail or banning the player before trying to help these young people deal with their situations, rehabilitation works and just maybe this kid will be the one to go into schools and talk to the youger ones about situations like this, and how they should handle themselves when facing situations at a sporting event.

  34. FOOTBALL FAN
    January 12, 2010

I was at the game and that was no cause for the young man to get so outraged at the refree in that manner his other teammates were not please about the call either but they didn’t retaliat in that manner, when he struck Brohim the second time he was about to send the third punch but Brohim pulled away and one of the team mates held him. Then it was just argument all over the field.

In my opinion this guy should be BAND from all sports because that’s lack of sportsmanship and example to the young boy’s who would love to play the sport.

Sorry to Brohim hope his pain has been healed.

  35. ban him
    January 12, 2010

up stockfarm for this man, am calling on those in authority to make an example of this young man. This behavior is not called for in the name of sports, be it football, cricket, basketball just name it.
shame on u boy! Ban on you for life.

  36. mahaut
    January 12, 2010

    …………..
Anyways my thoughts on this is that they should give that player a ban…Lets just take the Chelsea vs Barcelona game when Drogba verbally abused the ref..he got fined and a few game suspension…although he did not strike the ref.

It should be left up to the ref, if he wants to press criminal charges against the player; but on DFA part, I suggest a ban for that player, from both domestic leagues and if the player represents the national team should be suspended.

  37. player
    January 12, 2010

that man should be sent to jail like any other criminal that commits a crime…thats not just an asault but a disgrace to sportsmanship n to the game on a whole..at a time when we’re working so hard at trying to bring back the game to what i used to be….. shame

  38. Liberated
    January 12, 2010

Is this not classed as assault? Should this guy not be arrested and charged? This would send a clear message to others that this form of behaviour is not tolerated in sports and should be treated as any other criminal offence in order to protect referees and other sports loving people.

Lifetime ban and prosecuted for prison time. The bad man example he setting for the younger ones. That referee has sacrificed decades in the game for DA, none of the older generations ever did something like that, but this last couple of generations is always trying to prove how bad they can be because they gat a click to impress, or their click to have their back if they arse gettin smashed. So, lifetime ban and prison time. Go and gangsta with like minded gangstas up in the pen.
