A capacity crowd filled the Weirs Hard Court in Marigot to witness the opening of the 2015 DAVA LIME PetroCaribe National Volleyball League this past Sunday, March 1st.

The League was opened with an official ceremony with remarks from president Albert Loblack, DOC president Felix Wilson and Minister of Sports Justina Charles followed by the always exciting volleyrama.

Loblack welcomed the gathering while thanking his major sponsors LIME and PetroCaribe for their ongoing support.

He also stressed to the players the importance of discipline and commitment in ensuring success for their teams and league. His sentiments were echoed by Wilson and Charles.

Charles also spoke on the matter of upgraded sporting facilities throughout the island and made special mention of the proposed indoor facility being discussed at the government level.

Players showed their excitement and hope about this proposal by chanting “indoor” after the speeches.

The action then heated up with the volleyrama excitement.

The ladies went first and saw defending volleyrama and league champions DBiz Acers emerge victorious in a keenly contested final against rivals Sign Man Celtics.

The men then took center stage with MCCU Sunrise 2, a second division team, stunning their home crowd by defeating favored giants DBiz Young Vets.

Their luck continued all the way to the finals, however it would run out against Portsmouth Breakers who this year seemed more organized having retained a new head coach who revived the women’s team.

The Breakers placed 2nd in last year’s league falling in the finals to the Wolf Pac.

Patrons were well satisfied with the event which was of a high standard.

The Executive committee looks to continue this trend throughout the season.

Games begin this weekend, schedule is to be announced.
