Technology in Dominica, something we should be proud of – Darroux

Darroux

Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibilities for Information Technology, Kelver Darroux, believes that Dominicans should be proud of the technology sector here, though there is a lot of room for improvement.

In an interview with Dominica News Online recently, Darroux said that the telecommunications sector is also one which is of a high standard In Dominica.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction in terms of information technology and telecommunications for that matter because a lot of people who usually come to Dominica, especially persons from overseas, when they access our telephone systems and the kind of service that they get is of a high standard and I’m sure the service providers on the island can attest to that and that is something that we can be proud of.

“We can also be proud of our internet connectivity across the island and the broadband that we have. I think it is wide range, it expands to a lot of communities across the island. There’s still some more work that has to be done and the government continues to work along with the service providers to ensure that internet service and access can be fully comprehensive across the island,” he stated.

He added, “So there are a lot of areas that still need attention but I believe we are progressing slowly but surely and in the right direction.”

Darroux said that government is seeking to provide greater awareness of information technology in primary schools through a “One Lap Top Per Child” program for which it is seeking funding.

“We have met with officials in the Ministry of Education in that regard and we’re trying to seek some funding for the program and it is something that the government is very passionate about. We also continue to look at avenues of skilled development and training in technology because this area is an area which is very dynamic and one has to ensure that we never take that sector for granted because it is an emerging sector and Dominica has to take a first-hand approach to ensuring that we grab as much as we can from the information technology sector,” he stated.

Kelver I would like to know why the Internet Cafe in St.Joseph is closed down? when it is operated by a villiage council which you were a part of, not sure if you still are. Secondly it is very difficult to pick up wireless access in St.Joseph. I mention these two points to say this technology is the Key. I think all young people should be given the opportunity to embrace the world wide web (www) and with families that cannot offord to purchase a computer system or a laptop for their child at home should be given some form of internet access through a cafe within their village or through the public library where research for home work, class project and just general worl wide information can be obtain. If the villiage council cannot operate the internet cafe in st.Joseph is it possible to place it on bid to the public who may have an interest in operating or running an internet cafe. I personally would love to operate that form of business in St.Joseph from long but saw there was one operating already until this year when I saw it was closed down. One may asked why I am focus on St.Joseph it is a village near to my heart and one that I really love, but would really like to see that improvement within that village for upcoming young people that live in the village. So Kelver can you please respond to my interest in the good for St.Joseph.

Well contrary to what you think, you could have a million technical support guys with the most degrees but if you don’t have jobs for them then its like having a million dollars in desert, when you can’t buy a bottle of water.

I am a Dominican and have been around the world, until you get out there and experience then you realise how much potential dominica has but is decades behind in taping into it.

why some people have to be so negative i can never understand. we have higher broadband at better rates than some countries that are bigger and richer than we are. and if you think we are not up to date technology wise it must be you that has no idea about technology lol cuz alot of fellas in da running some of the hottest video cards and procc to hit the market recently. one of our best resources we have are our people who are very keen on technology and take to it very quickly. i believe that the young people who are coming up today, those who are out there getting degrees, those who are at home taking apart and fixing computers even those who sitting at home trying to hack everything they come across are also a big part of the growing tech industry in dominica.

That is true Dominica is reall gaining strength in modern technology. When my kids visited me many years ago they asked me about top up. I never knew a thing about it.It was long after they got top up in the BVI.Even the banking system in Dominica is more advanced than any other caribbean island. So we are small but making big progress in technology. When my son came up to visit last month ,there is nothing he did not repair before he went back.My lap top,my cell phone ,my desk top.just to mention a few.So i am takling from real life experience. All we need is jobs for some of the kids to display their skills.

      @Dominican.
I beg to differ with you on this one, the IT infrastructure in Dominica is in on a par with most of the developed world, and has been so for quite some time. you’ve obviously haven’t travelled to other parts of the region, or the world for that matter to realise how far ahead Dominica has advanced where information technology is concerned. The government has encouraged Telecommunication companies to invest in the most up to date Technology in Dominica. They have put in place the infrastructure for you as an individual to utilise, and the possibility to use whatever entrepreneurial skill you may possess to create a job opening for yourself and for others.
Its no good you stay from afar and bleat about no real jobs, tax, tax, tax..
As you rightly said tax is one of the sources of income any government has for it to function, without this income the services you take for granted like Education, health, and the roads you may be driving your car on every day all have to be paid for and maintained. Its also incumbent on you as a citizen of Dominica to contribute towards its development.

You are so used to the bad smell that u think it’s natural…the broad band service is zero and most IT business simply cannot operate in Dominica…Find out!

Broad band service is actually good

        December 26, 2010

Internet service is not up to par, and as for roads, you need to look around. You must be wearing wooden glasses. The government has stopped providing books to kids, how feasible it is to provide one laptop per child? Seek funding to give them free books instead, This administration must be thinking that Dominicans are “dotish” and cannot think for themselves. Stop lying to the people.

          December 27, 2010

I agree with you Robin. How are they going to provide one laptop per child. Why not think of well equipped computer lab in every Primary and Secondary school on the island. That is more realistic. And everything is funding funding, funding. You know what that means, more begging for DA.
