New eco-tourism site in Woodfordhill

Section of the new tourism site

Boat tours down the river which is lined with the “famous Bwa Mang” – that’s one of the services being offered by a new tourist attraction site at Woodfordhill Beach.

According to the management of Mangrove Bay Tours, the facility located  on the Woodfordhill River bank sits atop an ancient Arawak village.

The company says the tours give visitors access to a sensitive eco system that provides a habitat for a variety of unique plants and animals typically found in a Mangrove forest or swamp.

“The type of boats used, Paddle boats, are designed specifically for such sensitive areas. They are propelled by human power, pedalling as would a bicycle and leaves zero contaminants in the river from oils, fuel or grease since they are non existent,” according to a release from Mangrove Bay Tours.

Manager and founder Mike Wallace says “they also allow occupants to get very close up to the wildlife and plants under the mangrove”.

The facility’s official opening has been scheduled for June 7.

It is very welcoming when the local people can create beautiful sceneries, and can become very proactive in the neighborhood! To help develop tourism, A+ to you; but if Dominica are going to lack efficiency air access/ inter-airport for the twenty first century, believe me, there will only be two thing that will happens, Dominica will get worse or it well stay with the same stagnant growth. I am asking very one, let us start shouting out loud! We need an international airport…

Omg I am visiting for a while and the service I received from Jason and the other young gentleman was awesome at this spot.

It was indeed safe, and I saw some beautiful birds on the tour.

I would recommend this tour to all Dominicans and tourist like myself.

They need to start a kayaking program there
    Kayaking = More tourist
    More tourist = More money
More money = More country development

High Five to management and staff of Mangrove Bay Tours. I have taken the tour more than once< and all that is said is true, one feels renewed and the tour, well equipped with radio and security check, life jackets is a most and short lesson on how to use the equipment. This site and staff should be use to teach other Eco sites the professionalism shown to the public at all times. I will be back to enjoy what Nature has given us(Dominica) and the friendly staff that nurture it.

Very positive move since these paddle boats do not use outboard engine power they will attract the attention of local and foreign visitors and nature enthusiasts.

However, while there may be patches of mangroves in the area, these bwa mang trees are NOT MANGROVES. Please do your research. These Bwa mang trees are also found along the Indian River and several other rivers and swamp lands throughout Dominica. They are NOT Mangroves. Hope you consult the Forestry, Parks & Wildlife Division and Dr. Lennox Honychurch to get information on the flora and fauna of the area.

Finally this comes at a time when Dominica must prove it is trully desirous of seriously competing in the internatinal tourism market for quality visitor numbers and critical foreign exchange. There are so many things that still needs to be done… (1) airport capable of handling direct flights from North and South America and Europe, (2) improved hotel plant and ancilliary services (attractions like the paddle boat investment, shopping, dining, night life and entertainment), (3) improved safety and security… and food safety and security… Why cant Dominica be the food basket of the Caribbean???

Oops… not forgettinig the spa and wellness tourism sector…

    just a thought…

So why the Wesley Focus Group could not FOCUS on a similar project?

The best thing they find to do is to paint over the UWP Block and then run and say they not political!! Deceitful if you ask me.

Really a boat ride on the wodfordhill river, are you serious. That is why tourism is so lacking in Dominica. other than the river what else is in the area for tourist.are you serous? while this might be good for the locals, by no means is this good for tourism. how long is the ride? after a 10 to 15 min ride what are the tourist going to do? people wake up, this wont last the area is not developed enought for this to take off.

Excellent comment! I can feel the positive vibes from your encouraging words.
Would you rather we all roll over and play dead? This is awonderful start, an opportunity for YOU and others to add value to this product, with complimenting services.
If you already see ways to enhance the tourism product, dont bash the initiative. Challenge yourself, and let go of the crab mentality! We all want the betterment of our people and the nation in general. One love Wespo, positive criticism doesnt need a blog fight….I’m just saying….

i know that this is a good thing for us, i have done that twice and do intend to do it again. the owner is very friendly and knows how to communicate. his presence on a daily basis helps the tourist at the beach to feel safer, so it is a big positive any way you look at it. the price is also very affordable. it is a lovely experience for persons who love nature. GOOD WORK MIKE.

What a blessing, Nothing happens before it’s time.
Mr. Wallace your hard work is greatly appreciated.
May we Dominicans both at home or not search within ourselves (for we are given different talents) and positively contribute in one way or another in the uplifting of our beautiful nature Isle.

I applaud such an innovative yet eco-gentle initiative! My next holiday or leave I plan to do the river tour. A friend of mine did it and called me the same day saying how fun it was and how they are equipped with a rescue boat and give visitors a walky-talky in case anything goes wrong!

  21. June 4, 2012

I’m happy that we’re using our natural blessings as an asset but while we claim dominica to be the nature Isle we live in a foreigne way and contradictory life style which is uncomplimentary to the island. In short we do not love our environment. We litter the length and breadth of this beautiful and magnificient Island.

    • seriously?
      June 4, 2012

you cannot be seriously talking about this right? in what foreign and contradictory way is this supposed to be? you did read the part where it said ECO & NO FUEL IS BEING USED. how is that not complimentary to the island. you get to experience the island WITHOUT polluting it. get off whatever pedestal you THINK you’re on and get over yourself

      • June 5, 2012

I’m sorry if you misunderstood Me.I am not critical of this wonderful project, thumbs up to Mr.Wallace I ‘M ONLY MAKING the observation that littering is not yet a thing of the past in beautiful country.
