The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) says it continues to monitor the progress of a strong tropical wave with its axis located just east of the Lesser Antilles.
Information from the Meteorological Service indicates that the axis will move across the region and Dominica tonight.
As a result, shower and thunderstorm activity will affect the island today, Saturday, into Sunday.
Persons in vulnerable areas should be vigilant and exercise extreme caution in moving around due to the possibilities of landslides, falling rocks and flash flooding.
Additionally, persons living close to rivers and ravines should monitor these waterways as they can become swollen from intense rains.
Residents should continue to monitor reports issued by the local Met Service and stay tuned to their local radio stations.
Advisory from the Met Office
A strong tropical wave currently east of the Lesser Antilles is expected to move westward across the island chain includingDominica by Sunday.
Conditions appear conducive for moderate to heavy shower and possible thunderstorm activity to affect Dominica particularly from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
Gusty winds are also expected in the areas of showers and thunderstorms.
Current projected rainfall amount is approximately 70mm (near 3inches). Higher amounts are likely in elevated areas. As a result, persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are therefore being advised to be vigilant and exercise caution, particularly from late Saturday into Sunday.
Do not attempt to cross areas where rising water is observed.
Further updates will be provided should there be a change in current projections.
Is it only a threat to land? notice the special advisory notice does not address sea bathers and leisure boating especially given the long holiday weekend and the custom to have boat fun cruises along the West Coast even some venturing all the way to the Saints. The MET and ODM only seem to be interested in the land threat. I recommend they extend the advisory to sea goers also. In the interim all sea bathers and those planning on August Sunday and Monday pleasure cruises including fishers to exercise caution in fact I will recommend further that you check with the Met office and the Coast guard before venturing out to sea in those conditions.
Merci beaucoup.
Thank you ODM for the update, keep us informed as time goes on. Keep up the good works.
Rain rain go away because we in Dominica scared of rain. Anyways I hope this tropical wave keeps the alleged Martinique terrorist away from Dominica waters. But looking at the picture of the terrorist really reminds me of a person I call Tony . Are they related? He looks just like the person I call Tony.
