Newly-crowned Carnival Queen, Adicia Burton who represented the Kalinago Territory has called for the resurgence of indigenous and African history at all school levels in Dominica.
Burton, who is a former Carnival Princess, outperformed four other competitors to secure that title at the show which took place at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt last night.
The 19-year-old copped the awards for Best Performing Talent and Best Response to Question.
“What I really wanted to see the resurgence of our indigenous and African history at all school levels, because I feel that this is important in building the momentum for reparatory justice and simply knowing our history really unites us as a people,” she said during an interview with former Miss Dominica, Leandra Lander shortly after her win. “And secondly, a reading program.”
Burton continued, “I think that reading touches every aspect of human life, we have to be able to do math, we have to be able to read and under the equations, in science, you have to understand all the concepts.”
She revealed that her favourite round of the competition was the ‘talent round’.
“Because the song that I performed really spoke to me and what I was feeling and the message that I wanted to bring out,” she stated.
Burton said she was “extremely thankful” and “grateful” for everything that has happened.
She was sponsored by Petro Caribe.
The first runner-up position went to Sandrin Elizee of Kingshill. She won prizes for Miss Photogenic, Best National Spectacular Wear, and Best in National Spectacular Wear.
Tarnia Eugene who represented Grandbay secured the second runner-up. She grabbed the awards for Best in Evening Wear, Miss Amity, Best Swimwear, and Best in Swimwear.
Best Evening Wear Prize went to Meeya Francis of Canefield.
Contestant Moesha Thomas represented Petite Soufriere.
Very proud of the Sisters pro active suggestion in regards of her pan African and indigenous projections
F*ck Africa. They need to pay us West Indians & African-Americans reparations for selling our ancestors into slavery
That’s the uneducated thing to say, we know better today. It never happened. If you follow this new narrative set by state-sanctioned historians and missionaries, fail to read from your ancestors and pride yourself in the old adage that: if one wants to hide knowledge from black people just put it in a book, then stay ignorant; it’s a lonely place for you and Clarence Thomas to be in this age of information. Reparations is a must.
