Tourism Minister Denise Charles has reported a successful Real Mas 2023 under the theme “Mas An Lawi.”

A number of exciting activities were held during the Carnival season which culminated with two days of street jump-up on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21.

“From all reports, Dominica’s Carnival, the Real Mas 2023 was successful and generally very peaceful,” the Minister said during an interview with DBS Radio.

She continued, “And I must say that I was very pleased with the police report that we had an incident-free Carnival Monday and Tuesday.”

Charles commended the Chief of Police and his team for having a well-coordinated plan and ensuring that the public had a safe and enjoyable Carnival.

According to her, there were many visitors who came to Dominica to enjoy and experience Dominica’s Carnival.

“You had visitors from St Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, we had many returning Dominican nationals abroad, we had visitors from Trinidad, Barbados and even Jamaica,” Charles revealed. “And from all reviews we have received, they had a fabulous time attending Calypso shows, the various pageants, [and] the private events which were held during the season. We had an increase in the number of private events.”

She also commended the stakeholders, corporate sponsors, Calypso Association, musicians, organizers of Village Mas, and revelers for ensuring that the ‘ Real Mas’ 2023 was an enjoyable experience for all revelers and Carnival lovers who came to Dominica to have a wonderful time.

Do not get caught up and carried away in PR aesthetics, just do what you have to do, your work, creativity, and enthusiasm will speak for itself to transform the Country as a major Tourism destination. There is more work to be done, focus on that and let’s look forward to a bigger, better Carnival in 2024.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 2 Thumb down 10

I wonder if it’s you or here that talks the biggest BS. Nothing but cheap propaganda and rhetoric.

It was the worst carnival I have ever attended.
We paid 100xcd for the Dominican Calypso Final, only to stand up in the rain and to be blocked by umbrellas. Why wasn’t it held in the actual Windsor Stadium? A complete waste of money. We left before they announced the winner, TrillerG.

Then the 2 days of carnival in Roseau were threadbare. No carnival atmosphere, nothing.

Miss Dominica 2023 and TrillaG were scuffling along a dirty smelly Roseau. No riding for them on a truck.

All we heard was slack bouyon music, with small children dancing and along to the monotonous and repeative beats.

There were no public toilets, and the food being served was just cold and tasteless. This will be the final time I will attend this sham carnival. Next time, label it as a rum and sewo bouyon festival, because that’s what it was.

I thought it was the worst carnival in years. It’s just become a bouyon fest and the traditional aspects are all disappearing. There was no Old Mas parade as advertised (just the one band from Good Hope and a couple of sensays), there were hardly any bands for the costume parade which started two hours late and was more disjointed than it’s ever been. Is no crime her only measure of success? I think she and her staff have ruined it with their rebranding. It’s about time we remembered that carnival is a cultural tradition, not a tourism product. And it’s this fact that’s driving Dominicans away from it and into the nighttime events. Carnival should not be managed Charles and her cohorts, it should be run by the Division of Culture.

Why are we so negative in Dominica? How is it that we judge the success of our carnival by the lack of “major incidents?” Very vexing😡. Are we such a violent people that we pat ourselves on the back when there is none?

This cannot be good promotion especially from the promoter- in-chief, the minister of tourism.

We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting and organizing carnival. What we should be touting is the turnout, visitor arrivals, the majesty and color of the costume bands, the economic impact, and how the weather cooperated for the most part on both days.

There are so many other things we go on and on about that made the two days a success. Yet official after official comes on the media and talk about carnival being a success because it was incident free. SMFH!

Amen to that! This clearly shows the incompetence of Miss Charles.
